Using CPITN recommended from the WHO periodontal treatment needs in 22,118 children between 6 and 14 years from Rostock County were estimated. According to that the need of periodontal care in the examined young population is low and preventive care has precedence. For children until 12 years of age the evaluation of CPITN has some problems. The routine application of the CPITN is recommended as a screening for high-risk patients.

The ingestion of opsonized zymosan particles by neutrophil blood granulocytes and the chemiluminescence in samples of whole blood, induced by zymosan, Streptococcus mutans as well as phorbol myristate acetate, as a measure of the generation of reactive oxygene species were studied in patients with various forms of marginal periodontitis. Compared to a control group the phagocytic activity was found to be enhanced in progressive adult periodontitis and diminished in juvenile periodontitis whereas no differences to controls were found in chronic nonprogressive or postjuvenile periodontitis. With respect to the height of the chemiluminescence signals increased values were only measured in chronic nonprogressive periodontitis after stimulation by phorbol myristate acetate. The results indicate that impairment of blood granulocyte functions may be a pathogenetic factor for the development and the progression of marginal periodontitis.

The caries-preventing activity of fluorine is a surfact in the medicine. Dentists and physicists analysed with a new nuclear physical method the fluorine uptake of the tooth enamel after application of new caries-preventive agents. The fluorine profile of the first 3 microns of the enamel surface from deciduous teeth was established after three years clinical treatment with two new developed fluorine gels from the VEB Leipziger Arzneimittelwerk in comparison with Elmexgelee and a control agent. The determination of the fluorine profiles was performed using proton-induced gamma rays emission (PIGE) on the 2-MV van de-Graaf accelerator of the institute of practical nuclear physics of the physical faculty from the Karl-Marx-Universität Leipzig. The two new developed gels and Elmexgelee caused a similar fluorine concentration in tooth enamel. The fluorine profiles from the new developed gel A and the clinical approved caries preventive agent Elmexgelee are comparable. Gel A is produced under the trade mark "Laweflour" by the VEB Leipziger Arzneimittelwerk.

There is given a report about first clinical experiences in the partial cryodevitalization of the mandible. 3 tumor-bearing patients were treated. The resection of the mandible was not necessary. The process of revitalisation was observed by bone scanning.

1,018 cerebrally handicapped children were examined and the results were compared with the data of a study of 22,112 children. The caries prevalence (DMF/T and DMF/S), the oral hygiene (OHI-S) and the periodontal treatment needs (CPITN) were recorded. The caries prevalence of the retarded is nearly the same in children without handicap, but the caries prevalence is less in imbeciles and idiots. The degree of treated teeth is lower in the group of handicapped children. The periodontal status is more too bad but there are found no series periodontal diseases. Summarizing it must be demanded an early cooperation between the "dispensary of handicapped children" and the dentist for children and a realization of an intensive preventive care.

Prostheses and tooth-related aspects are related to voice and speech function. Phonetic points of view are discussed within prosthetic therapy. It is drawn the attention to possible improvements in the speech sound formation especially in connection with surgical prosthetic cares.
