The Sex and Work of Sex Work in a Quarter Century of Women’s Studies Quarterly 《

Abstract:This investigation for Women’s Studies Quarterly’s fiftieth anniversary examines the treatment of sex work over the second half of that history. Using six articles either focused on or directly considering sex work or prostitution, I constellate a sense of how the symbolism and connotation of sex work has shifted and transformed through three decades of publications in a prominent women’s studies journal. These articles originate from economic, sociological, and activist perspectives and concentrate on everything from migrant ethnography to violence against women. Both the anti-prostitution and sex worker rights perspectives reveal their advocates’ political commitments and are put in dialogue and opposition in light of different aims gathered under the mantle of feminism and women’s studies. This critical review suggests the treatment of sex work as a political and economic litmus test for future prospects in women’s studies and inclusive and intersectional feminisms.

“You’re International, Not American”: Academic Feminist Autobiographics and the Political Grammar of Nation “你是国际的,不是美国的”:学术女权主义者自传和国家的政治语法

Abstract:Over the last fifty years, the field of women’s studies has grown from a few classes created by academic feminist activists into a global intellectual and political movement. Though the field has always been international, historiographies of its institutionalization have largely limited their focus to the Global North, an elision that reinforces unequal power dynamics among countries. This article analyzes the political grammars of nation in two edited collections from the Feminist Press in order to examine how metanarratives about women’s studies have been produced and reinscribed through self-representational writing.

Movement Renewal and Attachments to the Past: The Commemorative Reception of the Feminist Novel L’Euguélionne in Québec

Abstract:How might we conceptualize speech acts that commemorate a novel, not in a physical site nor championed by the state or social movement organizations, but rather in various media outlets by audiences of a movement’s artistic productions? Using the case of the commemoration of the Québec feminist novel L’Euguélionne in newspapers, I introduce the concept of commemorative reception and find three claims shaped by different attachments to the novel and the era during which it was published: extending claims shaped by dissatisfaction and discouragement; specific claims shaped by disappointment and frustration; and enacting claims shaped by fear and mourning. These show that avenues for movement renewal were publicly constructed based on feminists’ individual affective attachments to the movements’ cultural production, which make commemorative reception a useful concept for scholars interested in intergenerational dynamics and the study of abeyance.
