The ‘early Late Stone Age’ Industry here described is from an open site in an area of high rainfall in south-western Tanzania. The assemblage, lacking heavy tools, is of particular interest in relation to this environment. Thomas Wynn is Assistant Professor in the Department of Anthropology, University of Colorado and Thomas Chadderdon is at Iowa State University.

Summary The initial phases of the Iron Age in many areas of southern Africa have been recognised as forming a single inter-related archaeological complex which may be correlated with some confidence with the initial spread of Bantu speech. This article attempts to draw together the available archaeological evidence from the whole of this complex and to make deductions concerning the internal relationships between different parts of it, based mainly on a comparison of the ceramics.

In this article the authors describe the finds from the excavation of a burial cave which yielded stone bowls. It is interesting to read this in conjunction with the article by Mrs. Jean Brown elsewhere in this number.

This report, written in 1957, is and will remain the only substantial account of an interesting mosque on Mombasa Island. This building has recently been destroyed, despite conservation work having been carried out on it when it was in Dr Kirkman's care in 1951, at which time he was Warden of the Coastal Historical Sites. We apologise for the quality of the photograph, which had to be made from a faded print, since obviously fresh pictures cannot be taken.
