Summary A description is presented of the so-called ‘dams’ of the northern Tanzania highlands and their invariable association with cattle-tracks is noted. Previous views have held that these ‘dams’ were either constructed to hold water for cattle or that they are caused by natural erosion. An excavation of a ‘dam’ in the Kimba valley, Ngorongoro, failed to reveal any sign of human work. Comparable structures in this and other areas are now best considered to be ‘pseudo-dams’ formed by erosion brought about by the use of cattle-tracks on the slopes of the valleys.

Summary A brief survey of Iramba Area in north-central Tanzania has provided valuable information concerning the archaeology of an area of which little was previously known, apart from its rock-paintings. A number of Stone Age sites are reported, as well as Iron Age sites with cord-impressed pottery which may be related to cord-rouletted wares from further to the north and north-west. New rock-painting sites are described and illustrated and the rock-art of this region discussed.

The publication in 1964 of the Rev. A. M. Jones' book Africa and Indonesia: the evidence of the Xylophone and other musical and cultural factors aroused much controversy. In this article the author replies to his critics. This is a revised version of the paper presented at the Conference “East Africa and the Orient” held at Nairobi in 1967.

Summary The Early Iron Age in East Africa is represented by two major related pottery types, Urewe ware (originally called Dimple-based ware) and Kwale ware, while a third collection from Lelesu in central Tanzania has clear similarities to both. This article provides a detailed typological comparison between representative collections of the three types and defines their differences and similarities, concluding that the Lelesu collection is typologically intermediate between Urewe and Kwale, though its closest relationships are with the latter.
