The article focuses on the possibility of using the controlling tools in the regional aspect. Currently, the development of the economy of the Far East and its regions is at the center of attention of the government of the Russian Federation. The development and approval of state programs "Socio-economic development of the Far Eastern Federal District" is a confirmation of this. Meanwhile, the stability, development, and competitiveness of the regional economic system are closely related to the level of interaction of its constituent functional subsystems, which determines the possible growth of its competitiveness. The development of the regional economy needs an array of information on the key parameters of functioning for making relevant and effective economic decisions, which can be implemented through the tools and methods of controlling and its accounting and analytical component.

The report presents the results of a field sociological study conducted in the regions of the Amur Region – the Khabarovsk Krai, the Amur Oblast` and the Jewish Autonomous Oblast` in September 2020, as well as – for comparison-data from the regions of the north and south of the Far East based on the results of a survey in August-September 2019. The empirical object of the study is the adult population of the regions. The current problems of spatial development are considered: migration attitudes and attitudes towards labor migrants from abroad, the social situation of the population of the Amur River Region, the assessment of the economic situation and the dynamics of the development of key enterprises.

The paper attempts to assess the total implementation of the strategy of the Amur region as a Far Eastern peripheral border region, occupying a transit position, on the territory of which large investment projects were implemented aimed at improving the main export transport infrastructure that ensures the integration of the region into the Asia-Pacific region. The conclusion is made about the need to make significant changes in the strategic documents of the region, which imply an increase in the level of food security and improvement of the settlement structure, contributing to the integrated development of the region.

The transport system of the Far East has an important role in the functioning of the socio-economic system of the region. The importance of transport in the Far East is determined by the following factors: a significant area of territory, a high level of localization of economic activities, uneven spatial development of transport infrastructure, the border position of the macro-region relative to key NEA countries. The growth of freight transport of certain modes of transport (rail, sea) is determined by the servicing of transit flows of Russian raw materials (coal) to the NEA countries even during the pandemic COVID-19. The decline in the passenger sector of the transport system of the east of the country under the restrictions of 2020 was not as significant as in Russia as a whole.
