Worldwide, buildings are present at the beach and in the dunes for recreation or habitation. Their presence can affect the beach-dune development, because they affect the airflow and Aeolian sediment transport in their surroundings. This might eventually have repercussions for coastal safety. We start examining these effects by studying the local sedimentation and erosion patterns around buildings. Hereto, we placed scale models of buildings on the beach. The sedimentation and erosion patterns around the models were measured using structure-from-motion photogrammetry. In general, the air flow around bluff bodies like buildings forms a horseshoe vortex. This creates deposition and erosion patterns in a horseshoe shape. For nearly all scale models, the upwind part and downwind tails of the horseshoe showed deposition. The horseshoe deposition at the building sides was sometimes visible, also depending on building orientation. Frequently, smaller erosion and/or deposition areas also developed between the horseshoe deposition and the building.

TOWARDS A FLOOD RISK ASSESSMENT ON A REEF-LINED COASTLINE

The assessment of coastal flood risk on a reef-lined coastline presents several challenges. From the probabilistic side, we need to consider all possible events that could occur in the system, taking into account the different contributions of waves, storm surges, and tides that contribute to the total water level. To estimate reliable flood extents, we need to accurately model the complex wave processes that occur across the reef. To explore the multivariate nature of coastal flooding, we rely on a climate emulator that accounts for climate variability and simulates time series of all the variables involved. Due to the computational constraints to numerically simulate thousands of events, we explore the feasibility of using a recently developed tool, the HyCreWW (Hybrid Coral Reef Wave and Water level) meta-model to estimate wave run-up and flooding extents. Limitation of a 1D assessment are analyzed and results compared with 2D modeling.

SEDIMENT BYPASSING MECHANISMS AT RIVER MOUTHS: EXAMPLES IN THE MEDITERRANEAN

River mouths along sandy coastlines are influenced by alongshore transport of littoral sands. Here, we study the mechanisms of alongshore sediment bypassing at two river mouths along the French Mediterranean coast. Both river mouths are exposed to the same wave energy, and have similar hydraulic behaviors. We find that bypassing rates are strongly dependent on river discharge and wave energy. When the river mouths are closed, longshore transport occurs as on an open beach for both sites excepted when the shoals are located upstream inducing a discontinuity with adjacent shorelines. The main difference is observed during the most important floods. At the natural Tet river mouth, bypass is mainly associated with spit platform breaching, while at the Agly river, the presence of jetties induced an export of sediment in the nearshore, then transport by waves to the downdrift coast.
