In Japan, The SRIC third generation database system has become a useful system which includes over 114000 field data about the failure of ship equipment passing the long time investigation. This database system has never been carried out in other countries. And the SRIC is a relational database system constructed using a number of data tables and having many useful functions. It has become clear that the average failure rate of the whole of ship equipment was 7.2 [case/1000hr.] and the work for the repair was 5.0 [man*hr.] through statistical analysis by the SRIC. And, it is noticed that the failure ratio of miscellaneous equipment is about 43 [%]. The average failure ratio is changing at the same level. However, the work for the repair has been increasing from the middle of the 1990s. The actual conditions for the reliability of the ship equipment gradually became clear in this study, but a long term approach of the raise in reliability is necessary in the present time and the future. This paper reports the latest results of statistical analysis and multivariate analysis of the main engine system by using the information of the SRIC. As a result of cluster analysis, the reliability of the main engine system and its characteristics became clear.

The marine diesel engine using water emulsified fuel was operated in a diesel engine plant for the electric generator on Training Ship “Nippon Maru”.This practical operation was carried out 2, 063 hours of total running. However several problems such as the lack of response performance to rapid increase of electricload and difficulty in disposal of leaked emulsified fuel from fuel injection system, occured in this operation.Further more the influence of emulsified fuel to the constituent parts of diesel engine was investigated when it was overhauled and the followings were found:1) On the case of using emulsified fuel, the opening pressure of injection valve lowered always in comparison with using marine diesel fuel.2) Slight abnormal wear was observed at the fuel injection nozzle and pump plunger.3) Glassy white deposit and wrinkled traces which were caused by the water contained in emulsified fuel were found on the piston herd.

This paper describes the application of an engine total electronic control system for marine engines. This system makes it possible to control engine performance according to the operation conditions. First, concept and structure of such a system are discussed as a feasibility study. Second, results of tests to confirm the functions of electronically controlled fuel injection system and exhaust valve system are introduced.

It is necessary to arrange the system to monitor the operational condition by various methods to achieve the safe operation of the engine. Based on the idea that the information on the engine condition can be obtained from its vibration signal, this paper carries out the experiment of the diesel engine of the actual ship. The vibration was measured for a long time (7800 hours) by means of a vibration sensor on the cylinder jacket. The hand touch can not recognize the time change of the vibration, but the three-dimensional expression of the vibration data through the frequency analysis allows the good understanding of the change of the vibration. The vibration is always changing if the vibration is observed on the long running hours of engine basis even in the stationary operation (engine revolution: 103 rpm) of the diesel engine. We executed the statistical analysis as one method to estimate the condition of engine by the information from the vibration. All the data of vibration was recorded on a normal engine condition, as a result we could not examine on an abnormal engine condition. Thus, the vibration data of low engine revolution (30 rpm) was used as the data of abnormal condition in this analysis. As the result of the analysis, it is found that the abnormal can be recognized from the above-mentioned engine condition. We succeeded to make the statistical model which can diagnose an engine condition.

In the present situation, some points concerning marine diesel engines are being improved upon. But combustion and exhaust space, where dust and residue were generated by using poor quality marine fuel oil, are still trouble-some factors. And still, some causes of the engine trouble have not yet been made clear. In this investigation, we analyzed the combustion residue which was collected from overhauling the main engine and the generator engine on seven motor ships among those operated by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines. Then, we also investigated the formation of combustion residue.

Concept of solar-hydrogen-methanol energy system for the transportation sector in Japan is outlined. In the system, methanol is produced with CO2 recycled and H2 produced by electrolysis with photovoltaic power.Concerning CO2 recovery from the exhaust gas of a 10, 000 kW diesel engine to be used in the methanol energy system, the effects of CO2 recovery parameters such as gas and liquid flow rates, liquid concentration, and stripping temperature on the engine performance and the attainable CO2 recovery ratio are analyzed on the basis of a mass transfer calculation model for a packed column with aqueous monoethanolamine solution. Heat rejected from the engine is used for CO2 recovery, but reduction in the engine output power is not avoidable, which is mainly caused by the shortage in power of turbocharger and the supplemental supercharging power. Both the maximum attainable CO2 recovery ratio and the reduction in the engine output power depend on the ratio of the stripping steam feed rate to the flow rate of the exhaust gas.

To avoid separation or abnormal wear of the spray coated ceramics caused by the partial contacting of the initial sliding, it is necessary to improve the initial surface break-in condition of the wear resistant spray coated ceramics of the piston ring and the cylinder linear of the marine diesel engine. The partial contacting wear test of spray coated ceramics was carried out by using pin-on-disk type wear testing machine. The test results of spray coated ceramics with no treatment were compared with that of Ni-P + PTFE plated spray coated ceramics. An observation of wear surface was carried out using together some methods of observation in order to analyze the wear surface in initial break-in condition quantitatively. The main results are in the following: Spray coated ceramics was worn abnormally after partial contacting wear test, but Ni-P + PTFE plated spray coated ceramics was worn normally, protecting from the damage by partial contacting. Phenomenon of surface break-in condition can be evaluated quantitatively by statistical processing of wear surface profile.

This paper describes the method to detect the abnormal engine condition by means of an algorithm of the neural network, which is modeled upon information processing capability of the operater. The 4-cycle diesel engine is used in this experimental study. As for kinds of engine abnormalities, the leak of the gas from the exhaust pipe and the abnormal combustion depending on F.O. cut are taken as an example. The neural network is composed of the units and the weights which link between units. When the engine is operated by the normal condition, the spectrum data of the radiation sounds from the engine are put in the input layer in the neural network. By learning those data, the weights are formed between units. We judge whether the engine is the normal condigion by using this neural network. Under the normal condition, the correct recognition rate is almost 80% or over both the exhaust leak experiment and the fuel cut experiment. On the other, in case of the abnormal condition, the correct recognition rate is 20% or less in two kinds of experiments. For the results mentioned above, this method using the neural network could satisfactory detect two kinds of abnormal condition.
