Physical inactivity is a major risk factor for morbidity and premature mortality across the globe, and the economic costs associated with the increased disease burden in sedentary individuals is immense. Thus recognition of the importance of physical activity to health through policy initiatives designed to increase physical activity levels of local populations through to national and international initiatives are of paramount importance. Using case studies to provide context, this chapter presents challenges involved in encouraging people to increase their physical activity levels and examines issues related to the delivery and ongoing sustainability of community-based physical activity programmes. Finally, it makes several recommendations related to the design and evaluation of future community-based physical activity interventions to maximize the likelihood of positive outcomes, and inform about the true benefits in terms of physical activity and related health outcomes.

This chapter provides a brief overview of considerations for disseminating research findings. It offers practical advice for the researcher to promote a successful career, and highlights some key considerations to ensure effective and meaningful communication of results for all stakeholders. Topics include identifying your target audience, selecting an appropriate journal, understanding researcher and journal metrics, determining authorship, maximising benefits of conferences, communicating results to participants, and broadcasting your key messages via social media or other popular forums.

This chapter presents the context for the research methods, procedures and other activities outlined in other chapters in the book. It introduces some of the health issues prevalent in today's society, how these are related to a lack of physical activity, and why ongoing research into the relationship between physical activity and health is of significant importance. It introduces some of the concepts and factors that are associated with the reduction in daily physical activity that has become so pronounced in the last 60 years. It then indicates the potential for new technologies to assist the researcher in the collection and analyses of data, and why research methods will need to develop accordingly, whilst at the same time needing to combat the wealth of easily accessible misinformation and unsubstantiated opinions.
