The chapter explores observational studies and their application in physical activity research with a particular focus on cross-sectional and longitudinal approaches. Considerations in the design and use of both types of studies are considered and the chapter concludes with a case study which utilized both a cross-sectional and longitudinal observational study design. The aims of the chapter are to: 1 Provide an understanding of observational studies with a specific focus on crosssectional and longitudinal designs. 2 Demonstrate how cross-sectional and longitudinal observational studies are used in physical activity research. 3 Provide guidance and considerations on how to design and undertake crosssectional and longitudinal observational studies to ensure the collection of high quality data. 4 Provide illustrative examples using a case study of a longitudinal and crosssectional observational study.

There has been significant interest in understanding population sedentary behaviour in recent years and how this impacts on children’s and adult’s health. This chapter provides an overview of key topics within sedentary behaviour research. The chapter discusses the development of the definition of sedentary behaviour and how this definition has been used historically. Common measures for assessing sedentary behaviour are presented, including subjective self-report measures and objective monitors. Given the range of contexts in which sedentary behaviour can occur, the chapter also provides an overview of settings that have been the target of sedentary behaviour research and interventions. Associations between sedentary behaviour and health in children and adults are discussed. The chapter finishes with two case studies that provide key considerations for the development of future interventions that target sedentary behaviour.

This chapter builds on some of the health issues presented in chapter 1. It commences with a consideration of some of the early beliefs in the benefits of exercise and then progresses to introduce some of the ground-breaking scientific research that initiated the accumulation of hard evidence in support of the association between physical activity and health. It also introduces the rationale for intervention studies that can determine the health benefits from the participation in exercise, and how these have contributed to the current recommendations by health and medical authorities. It then raises some of the current research questions and the need for ongoing research, as we have yet to identify how best to optimise exercise prescription for each individual and to fully understand how such physical activity interacts with other factors that impact upon health, such as nutrition and sedentary behaviour.
