This paper presents a design and implementation of an extended SIP to support QoS on IntServ/DiffServ networks. Design and implementation of a one way delay passive measurement system 单向延时无源测量系统的设计与实现

A lot of network management applications rely on the measurement of the delay experienced by packets between two observation points (one way delay). In this paper we describe an implementation of a passive OWD measurement system composed of a set of synchronized measurement points that observe selected packets and report transit timestamps to a collector station. Measurement points can be standalone probes or be embedded in routers. We first describe the system design and then focus on the implementation issues of the two building blocks of the system, the measurement points and the one way delay data collector.

Management of BGP/MPLS VPN with resilient paths BGP/MPLS VPN弹性路径管理

BGP/MPLS VPN has recently been receiving much attention from industries and standards bodies. It enables Internet service providers to provide IP-services with QoS guarantees to customers over a shared MPLS backbone. We propose an efficient resilient path management mechanism for BGP/MPLS VPN which can rapidly reconfigure MPLS paths in case of multiple link and/or node failure occurrences. An existence condition for finding a fast backup path which satisfies the resilience constraint is derived for a full mesh BGP/MPLS VPN. An efficient path-finding algorithm with O(n) computational complexity is presented. A simple example is presented to illustrate the operation and effectiveness of the approach.

An extensible agent toolkit for device management 用于设备管理的可扩展代理工具包

The advent of multiple connected and interoperating devices is becoming almost commonplace in the modern lifestyle. The management of these devices is an important asset for providing acceptable services to end users. Novel approaches are being developed that respect the communication, processing and power capacities of these limited devices. One of these approaches is the SyncML Device Management. in this paper, we present an open-source agent toolkit built around the SyncML model and evaluate the performance and cost of this approach in the context of limited devices supposed to host management agents.

Automated policy-based resource construction in utility computing environments 效用计算环境中基于策略的自动化资源构建

A utility environment is dynamic in nature. It has to deal with a large number of resources of varied types, as well as multiple combinations of those resources. By embedding operator and user level policies in resource models, specifications of composite resources may be automatically generated to meet these multiple and varied requirements. The paper describes a model for automated policy-based construction of complex environments. We pose the policy problem as a goal satisfaction problem that can be addressed using a constraint satisfaction formulation. We show how a variety of construction policies can be accommodated by the resource models during resource composition. We are implementing this model in a prototype that uses CIM as the underlying resource model and exploring issues that arise as a result of that implementation.

Towards scalable management of QoS-based end-to-end services 面向基于qos的端到端服务的可伸缩管理

The Differentiated Services architecture provides basic building blocks for quality of service (QoS) support within the Internet. Definition of scalable QoS mechanisms in the data path was a main objective. However, in order to provide guaranteed end-to-end reservations on demand the management of highly dynamic resource reservations by control entities (e.g., those performing admission control) must be scalable as well. This paper presents the DARIS architecture that provides a scalable management for QoS-based end-to-end services in the Internet. It defines a novel concept of dynamic and hierarchical aggregation of reservations, which operates on the network level of autonomous systems (AS). The aggregation concept reduces the managed reservation states as well as the number of signaling messages that have to be processed by management entities in intermediate AS. The aggregation concept was evaluated in detail using simulations including real Internet topologies.

Splash: SNMP Plus a Lightweight API for SNAP Handling Splash: SNMP加上用于SNAP处理的轻量级API

We describe a drop-in replacement for net-snmp, known as 'Splash' (SNMP Plus a Lightweight API for SNAP Handling), which adds support for efficient mobile agents to the standard SNMP agent. Experiments show that the SNAP (Safe and Nimble Active Packets) mobile agent engine is comparable in speed to SNMP, even for the simple polling scenarios for which SNMP is optimized, yet also provides flexibility that allows it to outperform SNMP in more complex scenarios. Splash allows network operators to select the monitoring paradigm (polling with SNMP, or a mobile agent approach) most appropriate for a given situation.

Value added broadband services are increasing in number and variety. Most broadband service operators provide all for a flat monthly fee, whether a user uses the full bandwidth all day long or just glimpses a few lines of news during the day. Furthermore, the fact that installed xDSL base subscribers have reached almost peak point stimulates broadband operators to develop a new paradigm of bandwidth utilization. Another inevitable reason for this paradigm shift is that broadband operators cannot guarantee fixed bandwidth any more against the explosive growth of usage rate. Because there are limited network resources, the effective bandwidth available to each subscriber totally depends on the bandwidth consumed by other subscribers. To overcome these limitations and give more flexibility and efficiency to the communication facility, we consider usage-based billing (UBB). UBB means the price for the subscriber is measured by usage in terms of amount of time or data. Against a flat fee policy, UBB relieves the burden of the monthly price for subscribers whose average usage rate is under bandwidth.

From processes to policies - concepts for large scale policy generation 从流程到策略——用于大规模策略生成的概念

Process-oriented IT management has gained more and more significance due to the need to specify and control IT infrastructures and services. An indicator for this circumstance is the success of the IT infrastructure library and the enhanced Telecom Operations Map. A process-oriented view allows administrators to specify management tasks and to decompose complex tasks into process chains and hierarchies. Policy based management is a promising candidate for implementation of processes, as it delivers a powerful concept for the implementation of management tasks. Policies are well suited for large scale systems, as the distributed execution in heterogeneous environments is one of the important features of policy architectures. We introduce patterns for the automated generation of policies from process specifications. To achieve the translation between process and policy specification, we leverage common characteristics of processes and policies and define mappings that serve as generic translation patterns. The use of these patterns allows automated translation of process definitions to policies. The approach enables high-level, intuitive management specification, while taking a step towards augmented automation and integration at the operational level. We derive requirements imposed by the translation, and present ProPolis, a policy language incorporating those requirements.

A process-oriented view allows administrators to specify management tasks and to decompose complex tasks into process chains and hierarchies. Policy based management is a promising candidate for implementation of processes, as it delivers a powerful concept for the implementation of management tasks. Policies are well suited for large scale systems, as the distributed execution in heterogeneous environments is one of the important features of policy architectures. We introduce patterns for the automated generation of policies from process specifications. To achieve the translation between process and policy specification, we leverage common characteristics of processes and policies and define mappings that serve as generic translation patterns. The use of these patterns allows automated translation of process definitions to policies. The approach enables high-level, intuitive management specification, while taking a step towards augmented automation and integration at the operational level. Design of an application programming interface for IP network monitoring IP网络监控的应用编程接口设计

We propose a novel general-purpose network traffic monitoring application programming interface (MAPI) for network monitoring applications. Our work builds on a generalized network flow model that we argue is flexible enough to capture emerging application needs, and expressive enough to allow the system to exploit specialized monitoring hardware, where available. We describe an implementation of MAPI using the DAG 4.2 Gigabit Ethernet monitoring card and a commodity Gigabit Ethernet adapter, we present a set of experiments measuring overheads, and we demonstrate potential applications. Our experimental results suggest that MAPI has more expressive power than competing approaches, while at the same time is able to achieve significant performance improvements.
