The Institutional Repository is one of the most important pillars of scientific communication between researchers and scientific institutions since the academic community is one of the most prominent communities in which there is an obvious correlation between the academic community and the available information sources on the internet. It is necessary to apply appropriate policies and strategies for the free access to information considering that the institutional repositories, related to universities, institutions, institutes and research and educational organizations, always seek to incorporate the intellectual production of their researchers in one or more fields according to the institutional repository planned coverage and free access availability to this intellectual production to all beneficiaries in accordance with the determined policies. Undoubtedly, the academic community needs a free access to knowledge so university libraries play a vital role in supporting the free access without legal orfinancial restrictions by contributing to support and build the institutional repositories and free access periodicals and offering different types of support for all beneficiaries.

Differential item functioning (DIF) occurs when individuals at the same level on the trait(s) or construct(s) being assessed but from different subpopulations have unequal probabilities of attaining a given score on the item (Rojers, 2005). In this study, we measured the Gender Differential Item Functioning in grade seven mathematics test composed of 25 items, which is part of the Cognitive Development Program in Sultanate of Oman. Mental-Haenszel (MH) and Item Characteristic Curve (ICC) Methods was used to detect DIF. The sample included 27329 (13258 male, 13801 female). The analyses showed that ICC was more rigorous (ranged 56% 80%) than MH (ranged 48% 52%) in detecting DIF. In addition, the study found significant differences in number of differential items due to sample size. Several recommendations were presented on the basis of the finding.

The current study aimed at examining the levels of counseling needs among Sultan Qaboos University's students; in addition to investigating the effects of some demographic variables on these levels. The study sample consisted of 1149 male and female students enrolled in both undergraduate and postgraduate studies. The sample represented 6.76% of the study population. The study utilized the descriptive design as the questionnaire of "counseling needs of university students" was used to examine the level of four need dimensions: Academic, psychological, social, and familial. The study results revealed that the students had high levels of overall counseling needs. Moreover, academic and psychological counseling needs were high among the students; in contrast, social and familial counseling needs were low. Also, the results showed statistical significant differences in some dimensions of counseling needs based on some demographic variables which are the study cohort, students' living place, their GPA, the family economic status and mother's education level. On the other hand, other variables showed no statistical differences on the levels of counseling needs. The study suggested some recommendations that aim to urge the students to benefit from the student counseling center's services.
