A fourth order step-down power converter is treated as an example of how to survey a given circuit to decide whether a given topology is interesting for realization. An idealized power converter model is then established in which continuous operation mode and ideal devices are assumed.<>

The basic idea of a predictive algorithm discussed in the paper is illustrated with help of the space vector method. Inverter switchings occur in a time instant predicted and are synchronised with a sampling wave. While a successive vector is acting, the current error vector is anticipated and the vector expected is selected. Its operational time is calculated as a multiple of sampling periods. Useful expressions facilitating indispensable calculations are presented as well as a condition of precision application of zero voltage vectors.<>

A predictive algorithm for current control of inverter fed asynchronous motors suitable for microprocessor implementation is proposed in the paper. It is based on an adequate handling of the mathematical machine model, specified in the sampling interval. It determines the conduction modes of the inverter in each sampling interval in such a way as to obtain a mean value of the stator current space vector equal to the reference value.<>

This paper describes an online parameter identification technique based on spectral analysis of machine voltages and currents and injected negative sequence components. The method is based on the analysis of voltages and currents by using the fast Fourier transform algorithm to determine their fundamental components. It is shown that the stator as well as rotor parameters can be determined online while the motor is driving the load with minimum disturbances. The theory is supported by a full scale digital computer simulation of a field oriented induction motor drive including the variation of critical parameters.<>

The paper deals with the design and application of a fuzzy controller in a robot drive system with an induction machine, fed by three-mono phase PWM current converters. Fuzzy numbers and their main operations are defined and the structure of a fuzzy speed controller is presented. The advantages offered by the fuzzy controller are demonstrated by simulated results that are discussed at the end of the paper.<>

Researchers have been interested in the development and application of switched reluctance motors (SRM). In spite of their simple construction, the mathematical analysis of the steady-state and transient behaviour of machines is very complicated. Scientific discussions are carried out in many respects, e.g. related to the useful or detrimental character of magnetic saturation in this case. The accuracy of results achieved by the applied mathematical procedure is not satisfactory in every respect. The model of SRM drives on the basis of MICRO-CAP III CAD program is shown.<>

A new configuration of a soft-switching power converter using phase-to-phase commutation is proposed. The topology of the phase-to-phase commutated inverter (PPCI) is derived from the auxiliary resonant commutated pole inverter. A control strategy is suggested and the principle of the PPCI operations is discussed. PPCI ensures switching at zero voltage across the working power transistors and zero current in the auxiliary switches. A comparative analysis of the losses in the inverter resonant circuits is made. Simulation calculations and experimental studies are also carried out.<>

This paper deals with a hierarchical and modular structure for real time control and monitoring of large discrete event systems. The first aspect of these works concerns the complexity of the physical process to be controlled: the whole process is split up into more simple subproblems. This splitting up procedure is recursive and stops when the resulting subprocesses are simple enough to be solved. The resulting control structure is a tree-like structure of control subsystems in which the abstraction level of each node is decreasing from the root to the leaves. In the proposed approach, each node of the tree-like structure is not only a control system but also a control and monitoring system called a 'control and monitoring module'. In fact, each node is the root of a part of the tree-like structure and implements all the functions necessary for real time control and monitoring.<>

The paper deals with the development of a quasi sliding mode control scheme suitable for position and speed regulation of electric servomotor drives, using a novel fuzzy logic approach. The new control scheme solves some of the major drawbacks of sliding mode controllers such as the excessive energy needed in control and chattering. Such a new control scheme maintains the traditional simplicity and robustness of sliding mode controllers. A practical comparison between the new control scheme and conventional sliding mode and fuzzy equivalent PI technique is also reported in the paper, confirming that the proposed approach is effective and works better either at steady state and during transients.<>

The switched reluctance motor is a doubly-salient, single-excited motor. This means that it has salient poles on both the rotor and the stator, but only the stator carries windings. A series of switched reluctance motor drives has been developed in the Computer and Automation Research Institute. The motor power range is from 1.5 kW to 22 kW. The paper shows the features of the different solutions of control circuits. The project has been financed by the National Committee for Technical Development of Hungary.<>
