The paper demonstrates how AI techniques, namely the expert system approach, can be combined with a parallel process control scheme to implement a redundancy robust knowledge based intelligent controller. The knowledge base for this controller was designed to make a decision to select between a number of control strategies running in parallel based on specified control objectives. The parallel control structure provides both a means of reliability through redundancy and wide ranging applicability due to the variable control structure capability.<>

The authors introduce a procedure to determine the set of essential parameters of a robot manipulator dynamic model. Then they use the Lyapunov stability theory to construct an adaptive control algorithm based on the model containing only the parameters that belong to the determined set. The proposed control algorithm is computationally efficient and it requires neither inversion of the manipulator inertial matrix nor joint acceleration measurement. Asymptotic stability of the proposed control algorithm is proved.<>

An improved version of transistor-based AC line conditioners is proposed. As compared to previously reported structures, it uses fewer standard transistor modules. This, in combination with less stringent gating requirements, improves the overall operating reliability of the system. In addition, it retains the same advantages such as sinusoidal input/output waveforms, fast dynamic response, and small input/output filters. The operating principle of the proposed structure is discussed and the voltage feedback loop design is analyzed. Results from a 25 kVA experimental set-up are provided for verification.<>

Force feedback is a basic element in realizations for telemanipulation and virtual reality. In telemanipulation, tactile but especially force information permits the remote operator to carry out efficiently operations which would otherwise be difficult to perform; nevertheless it permits a better simulation and interaction of virtual environment in the case of virtual reality. A system for grasping objects was projected and realized in a robotics laboratory. The operator wearing a glove drives a mechanical hand, having a force sensor on his own hand. This increases the performance of the telemanipulation system. The whole project is explained with particular attention to the control system of stepping motors used for force feedback.<>

A new approach to real approximation of an ideal sinusoidal frequency conversion process is put forward. This enables the output frequency range of line-commutated direct frequency converters to be expanded up to the value of input frequency. This is achieved by the application of a low frequency value sinusoidal modulating function and the replacement of input voltage and modulating function product with approaching input voltage level intervals. An example of this frequency conversion in terms of the simplest six thyristor circuit is considered for a fan drive.<>

This paper presents the analysis and design of a series DC to DC resonant converter for railroad applications. The proposed power converter is based on IGBT modules for the AC-DC link and fast power diodes for the AC-DC conversion. The application sought is a SMPS for start-up verification of mechanical, electrical and electronic systems of train locomotives. A special feature of this converter is the use of a variable air-gap transformer in the AC link. Twelve possible operating sequences, during resonant commutation, are detailed in an analytical investigation. Experimental results are presented and commented upon.<>

The method for determination of an initial rotor time constant of a cage induction motor is presented. It consists of applying the step form voltage and measuring the responding current. After some simplifications the current response term becomes easy to analyze. At least two measuring points are necessary for determination of both stator and rotor time constants.<>

A design method of a brushless DC type AC servomotor drive system is presented. The servomotor drive system is designed to be applied to factory automation. The AC servomotor used is a trapezoidal type designed and made by Daewoo Heavy Industries Ltd. The drive system consists of a velocity controller, current controller and inverter. In the drive system a power transistor is used as the switching device and a 16 bit, one chip microprocessor is applied for the implementation of digital control. The velocity control algorithm is basically PI control with appropriate filtering. The current controller is also based on PI control, which is implemented in analog circuits to reduce the time delay effect. The designed servomotor drive shows good performance up to a velocity of 4500 RPM, which is sufficient for most factory automation applications.<>
