We describe the fabrication by electrical microcontact printing of optical waveguides and splitters made of poly(4-vinylphenol) doped with phloxine B, permitting inexpensive, rapid prototyping over large areas and construction of integrated, multi-level devices.

Direct THz excitation of a parallel plate waveguide is demonstrated. The transmitter yields a THz signal with and without an applied bias, and is the next step toward a guided wave TEM-mode THz bandwidth device.

We measure the correlation between the Brillouin characteristics and structural parameters of a holey fiber (HF). Our observations point to a means to perform high resolution non-destructive structural characterization along lengths of HF.

Self-passive q-switching has been demonstrated using a Nd:YAG gain medium that is externally implanted with chromium ions through annealing process. Pulsewidths up to 2 /spl mu/secs and PRFs up to 100 kHz have been demonstrated.

Recent developments in the field of high-power fiber laser systems are reviewed. Basic limitations have been overcome by applying novel fiber-designs and experimental strategies, leading to significant power-scaling of continuous-wave and pulsed-fiber lasers and amplifiers.
