The respondents of this study were the 80 Agta Dumagats of Dupinga/Malinao, Gabaldon, Nueva Ecija, Philippines who were selected to answer structured questionnaires & interview prepared by the researchers.

The researcher utilized questionnaires in gathering the primary data for the study. The participants were approached and guided personally by the researchers in answering their questionnaires and their answers or the interview were recorded through the use of audio recorder to facilitate an early retrieval of answers or responses. Questionnaire was validated using the following approaches; The researchers established content validity by giving survey questionnaires to the respondents. The researchers also referred and consulted with expert in the field of the research problem. And, the researchers did pilot testing where 20 Agta Dumagats answered the questionnaires to ensure its validity and reliability.

Most of the respondents were at the age bracket of 35 years old and above. It reflects that both male and female Agta Dumagats were cooperative in social interactions. For their religion, it indicates that majority of them were Born Again Christian. Majority of their Civil Status were married. It can be seen that all of the respondents speak Tagalog as their usual dialect spoken. Majority of the respondents were 26-50% of dumagat blood quantum. Rice was the most eaten in terms of plant based food. Agta Dumagats knew how to cook by using local recipes and common cooking methods because they had already adopted the manners in which the Tagalogs prepared their foods. They constantly washed their hands before eating, and they always drink water before and after eating. Agta Dumagats also have common practices and habits like giving or sharing foods with their neighbors and chewing “NGA-NGA” (bettle nut) before and after eating.

On their manners of acquiring food, if they do not have something to eat, some of Agta Dumagats go to stores to buy foods. Traditional rituals and praying before hunting were still observed. For them to keep the good harvest - taking good care of the plants by means of watering it

New Zealand has a long history of migration from the Pacific. Migrants from the Pacific, like all people moving to a new country, face the challenges of finding suitable employment and a place to live, accessing education, and forming new social, professional, and community networks while adapting to differences in culture. Our research uses the Longitudinal Immigration Survey New Zealand (LISNZ) and Statistics New Zealand’s Integrated Data Infrastructure to focus on differences in outcomes between migrants from different Pacific countries who gained residence approval under different visa types. Pacific migrants interviewed in LISNZ faced a number of challenges to becoming successful and settled in New Zealand, including limited English and low education, which may have caught many in low-paying or part-time work and made them particularly vulnerable to economic conditions. Although most reported good health and generally positive non-economic outcomes in New Zealand, some of their outcomes grew worse over their first three years after residence approval. The reasons for these declines are not wholly clear and could be investigated in future research.

Initiatives and Challenges of Agricultural Crop Sector in East Coast Economic Region (ECER) Development Projects in Malaysia

The share of agriculture to GDP is continuously declining in Malaysia, but agricultural sector is very crucial to ensure food security, employment generation, socioeconomic improvement, economic growth, poverty reduction, and overall achievement of vision 2020. The East Coast Economic Region (ECER) represents 34% of total national agricultural area, which has a good potentiality to improve productivity and reduce high poverty intensity in this area. Realizing the importance, Malaysian government has taken a large development project in the ECER region in 2006, but much is not known about the project due to limited number of study and unavailability of official performance report of the project. Hence this study is an attempt to explore one of the niche areas, which is agricultural crops sector. The major initiatives of agricultural crops sector include establishing three agro valleys as major vegetable and short-term crop growing areas. These involve organized modern farming methods in a sustainable manner to improve efficiency and productivity of agricultural production of paddy, vegetables, and fruits. The prospects of the project are also very much anticipative, because the size of domestic market has grown in recent years. But there are lots of challenges to meet the target of the project. Institutional supports, physical infrastructural supports like transportations, irrigations, and preservation facilities are not adequate in this area. To meet the target and to ensure the success of the projects, some more initiatives for improvements and proper management are also necessary. These include, for example, farmer‟s cooperative or institutional involvement for marketing the crops, financial supports and subsidies, cooperation among agents and departments, training to avoid environment degradations, and adaptation techniques to cope with adverse effects of climatic changes, etc. It is expected that the relevant government authority and agencies, especially the ECER project authority, will be highly benefited from the findings of the study

This conceptual article proposes a strategy of development of tourism destination through strategic partnership. A strategic partnership is considered as an important resource through learning and sharing so that the tourism destination will have competitive advantages in a strict business competition. Attraction is a gift from God relating to the wealth of natural resources, including human resources. The purpose of the combination of the three perspectives is to provide the dynamic for tourism destinations to increase competitive advantage, where the primary data are collected from managers and visiting tourists. The author has conducted separate studies on the concept of tourism attraction, uniqueness of resources, and strategic partnerships in the development of a tourist destination, and few researchers are linking these three concepts. This approach enables the synergy among the local community, managers of private sectors, and government as policy makers on tourism regulations.

In 2007, Australia's Commonwealth Government took a dramatic new approach to the governance of remote Indigenous communities. The 'Northern Territory Intervention' aimed to combat abuse and violence in remote Indigenous communities, and included far-reaching changes to welfare administration, employment programmes and policing. This paper considers a hitherto obscure aspect of the Intervention: the surveillance of publicly funded computers and internet use. Between 2007 and 2012, providers of internet and computer access facilities in the affected communities were required to audit and record computer use. In this paper we examine the legal and policy dimensions of this case of governmental surveillance, using interviews, published materials and documents obtained through freedom of information processes.

Halal Tourism Industry in Indonesia: Potential and Prospects

This study confirms that halal tourism is a tourism industry which has contributed to economic growth in Indonesia, although the world economy slows down. In Indonesia, halal tourism has long been grown in the form of a pilgrimage undertaken by people with religious motivation. Along with the development of the global Islamic economy, then this type of tourism is undergoing a metamorphosis that requires a change in modern ranging from attractions, hotels, up to marketing. With the phenomenological approach, this study concludes that halal tourism has become part of the national tourism industry to position Indonesia as a center for halal tourism in the world in the future.

The Economic and Fiscal Burdens of Disasters in the Pacific
Pub Date : 2016-12-12 DOI: 10.2139/ssrn.2905652

The Pacific Islands face the highest disaster risk, in per capita terms, globally. Examples of catastrophic events in the region include the 2009 tsunami in Samoa, the 2014 floods in the Solomon Islands, and the 2015 cyclone Pam in Vanuatu. Even without these catastrophic events, countries in the Pacific are affected by frequent natural hazards of smaller magnitude. We first evaluate the three main sources quantifying risk in the region: EMDAT, Desinventar, and PCRAFI. We describe these sources and conclude they all underestimate the risk, especially for atoll nations, and because of four important trends with respect to changes in natural hazards as a consequence of climate change. These are: (1) increasing frequency of extremely hot days; (2) changing frequency and intensity of extreme rainfall events causing flash flooding or droughts; (3) increasing intensities and changing trajectories of cyclones; and (4) sea-level rise and other oceanic ecological changes. Financial protection is the one policy area where the Pacific is the most exposed—given the very large role of the public sector in the region. It is also the area where there is probably the most room for easy-to-implement improvement. We end by analysing the applicability of various financial instruments to facilitate both ex-ante and ex-post disaster risk management in the region.
