Nonlinear optics with WGM crystalline resonators: advances and puzzles 非线性光学与WGM晶体谐振器:进展和难题

In this paper we discuss theoretical aspects of achieving ultrahigh Q-factors in crystalline whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators as well as peculiarities of parametric frequency conversion, low threshold parametric oscillations based on degenerate four-wave mixing, photorefractivity, and thermo-optical instabilities observed in the resonators.

Ultrahigh-Q crystalline optical whispering gallery mode resonators 超高q晶体光学低语通道模式谐振器

We report on fabrication of ultrahigh-Q crystalline optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) resonators via mechanical polishing. The maximum Q-factor achieved at room temperature exceeds 2/spl times/10/sup 10/. We discuss strong nonlinear behavior of the resonators and propose several devices based on the resonators. We have studied WGM resonators fabricated of calcium fluoride and few other crystals and measured their quality factors. High optical Q-factor was obtained due to several nonlinear optical effects. Two of them are instability due to strong thermal nonlinearity and optical oscillations based on four wave mixing.

Spectroscopic photodetectors have been fabricated in a standard CMOS process. These photodetectors are designed to distinguish between two different fluorescent markers. They have applications in nucleic acid analysis, cell-based biosensors and tissue based-biosensors.

High-speed, low-voltage modulation in circular WGM microresonators 圆WGM微谐振器中的高速、低压调制

Novel approaches to obtain compact, high-speed, low-voltage modulators using circular microresonators are presented. Two different mechanisms, free carrier injection and depletion width modulation are considered. Frequency 3 dB bandwidths of over 8 GHz are achieved at modulation voltages less than 1V.

Intense directional lasing from three types of noncircular micro-ring cavities was observed, the lasing resonances were assigned to stable whispering gallery modes and chaotic whispering gallery modes respectively. Both types of resonances have cavity Q factors higher than 5000.

We review the conditions for the occurrence of coherence phenomena in passive coupled optical microresonators. We derive the effective steady-state response and determine conditions for induced transparency and absorption in these systems.
