This work investigates data compression algorithms for applications in non-volatile flash memories. The main goal of the data compression is to minimize the amount of user data such that the redundancy of the error correction coding can be increased and the reliability of the error correction can be improved. A compression algorithm is proposed that combines a modified move-to-front algorithm with Huffman coding. The proposed data compression algorithm has low complexity, but provides a compression gain comparable to the Lempel-Ziv-Welch algorithm.

There is a significant spectrum of Wireless Sensor Networks applications. Using of the WSN fits to natural setting because it does not require supply power sources and communication lines. When proposing such an application the energy management has to be taken into the consideration. This paper is dedicated to the solutions where the energy of the water streams is evaluated based on its acoustic emission in order to predict possibility of floods. For the multi-environment set up the theory of learning systems was inspirational. The ultrasonic sensor works as the reference for learning phase. Evaluation of the acoustic emissions is provided by the neural network. Firstly the system requires the parameter adjustment (learning phase). Afterwards the unit takes into consideration the learned information and apply them in the operational mode. The devices are able to communicate via the RF modules working within the ISM band.

Utilization of traditional teaching methods in education of medicine was considered as the most convenient way to introduce clinical problems and topics during long history. Thanks to the modern technologies and advances in multimedia, simulations and on-line availability obtained during last decades, this barrier was successfully overcome also in this area of higher education. Therefore, our activities are aimed to bring teachers new possibilities to make education of medicine more attractive and more illustrative at all medical faculties involved in MEFANET network. This should be achieved by integration of virtual cases into pre-clinical preparation of students. The virtual cases presented in the form of virtual patients will stimulate and improve both the self-learning activities and the critical thinking of students and future physicians. To discover the needs and expectations of our teachers in the area of virtual patients an online survey was conducted. Based on the requirements derived from this survey the most suitable platform was selected to be implemented into the activities to support multimedia and electronic forms of education at medical faculties.

In the paper an approach to the reliability analysis of multistate systems and their redundancy is presented. First, basic notions concerned with reliability analysis of the ageing multistate systems are introduced. The system risk function and the moment of the system exceeding the critical reliability state are defined. The multistate series system with hot single reserve of its components is analyzed and its reliability function is determined. Moreover, we consider two types of redundancy, when basic and reserve system components are independent and second case when basic and reserve system components are dependent according equal load sharing rule. In such model of dependency the increased load is shared equally between basic and reserve components. Presented theoretical results are applied practically in maritime transport to the reliability analysis of a bulk cargo loading system. Basic reliability and risk characteristics of the bulk cargo transportation system are determined and compared with results obtained in case of independent and dependent redundancy.

The paper deals with a method of reducing the unbalanced magnetic pull for large synchronous hydro generators, in case of rotor eccentricity and/or shape deviation of the rotor and stator. The method is based on a dedicated data acquisition system and virtual instruments developed in LabVIEW environment. Experimental results are presented for a 186 MVA and 500 RPM vertical synchronous hydro generator. The method of magnetic centring was applied successfully on 30 high power electrical machines from industrial environment in Romania.

This paper presents the approach to research integrated drone-based systems for post emergency monitoring of NPPs as systems with a multi-level degradation. Reliability block diagrams of the systems are built. Degradation levels, conditions which determine them and formulae for calculating the reliability functions of the systems on these levels are proposed. The possibility of using developed models for research systems with a multi-level degradation and using drones are shown.

Electricity networks with an isolated neutral point type IT are commonly used in ships. This is mainly caused by the need to ensure the continuity of supply for electrical equipment, which decides about an appropriate operation of the vessel. The occurrence of leakage current with values dependent on components in transverse impedance carries a risk of fire. The article presents fire risk that occurs in ships in the aspect of capacitive leakage currents. Currently, the only measure of protection is to monitor the condition of insulation and signalization in case of exceeding the limit values. The article shows the system of limiting leakage currents in ship electricity networks type IT via an active compensation method with the use of controlled current sources.

The continually changing learner's mobile environment gives rise to many learning context. This paper describes a model of a case-based approach to context-aware content sequencing in mobile learning environments. The design of mobile learning teaching systems with adaptive content sequencing requires significant effort, since dependencies between educational characteristics of learning resources, learning context and learner characteristics are too complex. According to the proposed approach, an prototype of Mobile Finite Automata Tutoring (MoFAT) system using a context-aware case-based content sequencing is presented. The MoFAT's learning material organization has a hierarchical structure with four levels. A new content sequencing problem (a new case) is solved by finding a similar past case, and reusing it in the new content sequencing problem context.

Despite recent advances in computer vision humans still perform recognition of a novel scene in a single glance better than the best of the available systems. Consequently in order to achieve a similar ability in artificial intelligent systems, it is necessary to further study the low-level mechanisms in image processing for solving computer vision problems. The purpose of this study is to find an effective approach to classify images into threatening and non-threatening categories. Some of the existing algorithms for scene classification are examined and are studied in order to identify which is the best for the threatening context. We define a threat as a cause of harm or danger from a person or some phenomenon. We have constructed an image database containing hundreds of images labeled and divided into threatening and non-threatening categories. The results of classification shows that using some of the current state of art features and scene descriptors, the accuracy of classification is up to 80%.
