References to mass housing complexes tend to balance between their generally unknown realities and the pervasive power of their representations. These are often nourished by emotional experiences conveyed by words and images in mass media and political discourse – especially when it comes to ghettos or problematic suburbs – and multiple arrays of commercial, documentary, and fictional depictions of everyday realities or aspirational imaginaries. Complementarily, different media types entered middle- and lower-class houses, rendering these mediations bidirectional by progressively conquering their place in the domestic scene. Besides, the history of access to housing runs parallel and often intertwined with the history of media, rendering mass housing an object of mass media and a pop culture subject, entangling different and often contradictory representations. Simultaneously the country dessinée and the the banlieues , France is a particularly revealing example. This article tries to explore the applicability of the epitome ‘Sex, drugs and rock’n’roll’ to the Portuguese social reality, particularly in the field of rock music. Rock music took its first steps in Portugal in the late 1950s/early 1960s, and from an early age, it has been associated with risky conducts, particularly linked to sex, alcohol, and the use of other licit and illicit substances. So, in the same way that happened in the Anglo-Saxon reality, this epitome encloses a vast process of moral panic production/reproduction in Portugal. Considering the absence of scientific research exploring the association between rock music, substance use and/or abuse and occasional and/or risky sexual conducts in Portugal, we consider it crucial to develop this approach. This article is based on factual and current data, particularly interviews from some protagonists of the Portuguese rock music scene.

O Serviço de Belas Artes da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian (SBA-FCG) foi criado em 1960 com o objetivo de apoiar financeiramente todos aqueles que, carecendo de recursos financeiros, quisessem desenvolver um programa de estudos inerente à prática, à investigação ou ao aperfeiçoamento artístico, no país ou no estrangeiro. A investigação em ‘Arquitectura e Urbanismo’ – desenvolvida desde 1961 no Laboratório Nacional de Engenharia Civil (LNEC) – era um dos vários domínios abrangidos pelas candidaturas a “Bolsas de Estudo de Especialização e Valorização Profissional em Artes” atribuídas pelo SBA-FCG. Expõe-se aqui o levantamento dos apoios concedidos por este serviço a arquitetos, para o período compreendido entre 1960-2000, procurando identificar aqueles que também desenvolveram investigação científica no LNEC. Destacamos na nossa análise as candidaturas dos arquitetos Francisco Silva Dias, Mário Krüger e José Manuel Pinto Duarte, três gerações distintas de arquitetos-investigadores. Apuram-se quais os programas de investigação desenvolvidos por estes três arquitetos, ao abrigo do financiamento da FCG, e cruzam-se com as temáticas por eles trabalhadas no LNEC. Assim, com base no material depositado nos arquivos e biblioteca da FCG e do LNEC, o presente artigo oferece uma sistematização de informação inédita, permitindo uma atualização do estado da arte da investigação em arquitectura e urbanismo desenvolvida e experimentada em Portugal. Popular songs play an important role in mobilising political campaigns by creating platforms for voices of protest and dissent in the discussion of significant issues that questions those in power. This research considers the role songs of protest and political dissent have played over the past 60 years of Aotearoa New Zealand’s postcolonial history. Political messages have been embedded in musical texts reflecting the region’s unique historical and cultural development, especially the positioning of its Pacific peoples (indigenous Māori and immigrants from other Pacific Islands) in issues and processes of political protest. In the 1960s and 1970s, when global human rights movements were gaining traction, in Aotearoa intense feelings over inequities and injustices manifested themselves in song. Māori land rights, sporting relations with the apartheid regime in South Africa and the programme of nuclear testing pursued by the French in the Pacific were all issues of major concern, provoking marches, occupations and boycotts. The social reforms and domestic processes experienced in the separation from Britain (1947) included a ‘coming out’ of difference and dissent and a ‘coming in’ of new cultural influences into the music industry by new waves of migration and the birth of the local recording industry (1960–1986). This case study features 17 representative recordings that cover a range of themes (racism, land rights, nuclear tests, climate change and political discontent) that attracted media attention and public debate. The results presented show how protest songs in Aotearoa continue to play an important role in mobilising political campaigns in the Pacific.
