Beyond Learning: Leveraging Undergraduate Research into Marketable Workforce Skills 超越学习:利用本科生研究培养市场劳动力技能

Learning outcomes can structure and enhance the undergraduate research experience, building skills such as critical thinking/problem solving, communication, and team-work/collaboration. These skills often correspond to what employers desire in their recruitment of recent college graduates: students possess career competencies that result from undergraduate research and prepare them for the workforce. However, students do not necessarily recognize the value of undergraduate research for workforce preparation, recognize how their research experience has prepared them, and/or are unable to fully articulate their preparedness. The authors discuss the value of integrating learning outcomes across the college experience to enhance undergraduate research and career readiness. They detail the implementation of an integrated model within a primarily undergraduate institution and suggest strategies to best leverage undergraduate research for workforce preparation.

Comparing Online and Traditional Student Engagement and Perceptions of Undergraduate Research 网上和传统学生参与度的比较及对本科生研究的看法
IF 0.6 Pub Date : 2020-06-01 DOI: 10.18833/spur/3/3/1

Undergraduate research benefits students by strengthening skills, providing professional growth, and improving retention. Yet significant barriers exist, including low awareness of opportunities, restrictive cultural norms, and resource constraints. The proliferation of online education potentially increases barriers, both real and perceived. This study compared participation rates and perceived barriers between undergraduate distance and traditional students. Survey results indicated no significant differences in self-reported participation or overall interest in research. Despite inherent structural limitations of online education, there were no significant differences in the respondents’ perceptions of access to opportunities, physical resources, or human resources. Significant differences were seen regarding awareness of research opportunities. Although institution-specific moderating factors may influence results, this information is valuable for strategic planning aimed at increasing opportunities and awareness for undergraduates.

Contributions Made by Undergraduates to Research Projects: Using the CREDIT Taxonomy to Assess Undergraduate Research Experiences. 本科生对科研项目的贡献:用学分分类法评估本科生科研经历。
IF 0.6 Pub Date : 2020-01-01 DOI: 10.18833/spur/4/1/3
Matt Honoré, Thomas E Keller, Jen Lindwall, Rachel Crist, Leslie Bienen, Adrienne Zell

The authors developed a novel tool, the CREDIT URE, to define and measure roles performed by undergraduate students working in research placements. Derived from an open-source taxonomy for determining authorship credit, the CREDIT URE defines 14 possible roles, allowing students and their research mentors to rate the degree to which students participate in each role. The tool was administered longitudinally across three cohorts of undergraduate student-mentor pairs involved in a biomedical research training program for students from diverse backgrounds. Students engaged most frequently in roles involving data curation, investigation, and writing. Less frequently, students engaged in roles related to software development, supervision, and funding acquisition. Students' roles changed over time as they gained experience. Agreement between students and mentors about responsibility for roles was high.

A Peer-Mentoring System as a Nontraditional Approach to STEM CUREs. 同侪辅导系统作为一种非传统的STEM治疗方法。
IF 0.6 Pub Date : 2020-01-01 DOI: 10.18833/spur/4/2/4
Mark Lubkowitz, Cierra Pierce, Tabitha Finch
At Saint Michael’s College, the challenge of quality mentoring inherent in CUREs is addressed using near-peer mentoring. Near-peer mentoring is when an individual completes a course and then serves as a mentor in subsequent iterations (McKenna and Williams 2017). In an undergraduate institution, this can be as simple as a third- or fourth-year student working with a second-year student. Through a CURE developed for a Molecular Genetics lab course, a widely adoptable model has been created.

Experiential and Service Learning through Local Data Projects 通过本地数据项目进行体验式学习和服务式学习
IF 0.6 Pub Date : 2019-06-01 DOI: 10.18833/spur/2/48
Diego Mendez-Carbajo, Stephanie Davis-Kahl
An increased focus on high-impact pedagogical practices at a small, residential, higher education institution led to a grant-funded project to gather and analyze multidimensional data on 10,155 residential foreclosures in central Illinois from 2006 to 2013. Student researchers applied skills gained through academic coursework to investigate a real-world issue in the local community and communicated their findings to a variety of stakeholders, including local governments, nonprofit organizations, banks, and social agencies. The direct assessment of 85 capstone-level research projects reveals that those with a community service focus displayed a stronger mastery by students of particular expected proficiencies relative to research projects with a traditional scholarly focus.
