S. Whipple, Shardul Tiwari, Tashiana Osborne, G. Bowser, Sarah A Green, P. Templer, Susie S. Ho
The authors present a new approach to show how interdisciplinary collaborations among a group of institutions can provide a unique opportunity for students to engage across the science-policy nexus using the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Through collaboration across seven higher education institutions in the United States and Australia, virtual student research teams worked together across disciplines.

Through interviews with 28 students and 17 mentors from a campus-wide undergraduate research program, common themes in the responses to COVID-19-related impacts were found. Students had to adjust to the type or scope of their research obligations while handling academic responsibilities, and mentors explicitly considered students’ well-being above expectations related to research.

To improve model performance and study climate change impacts across physical, biological, and social systems, model intercomparison projects (MIPs) are regularly conducted. MIPs represent a crucial tool for undergraduate researchers to meaningfully contribute to climate change research.

Simulating International Climate Negotiations in Classrooms 在课堂上模拟国际气候谈判
IF 0.6 Pub Date : 2021-09-15 DOI: 10.18833/spur/5/1/6
T. Hickmann
A simulation of the international climate negotiations was designed for more than 50 students of political science and other study programs dealing with sustainability. A key advantage of such simulations is that they are highly adaptable to groups of different sizes, academic backgrounds, or learning levels and can be used to teach a number of major concepts within the same framework.. the primary objective of such simulations is that students grasp the difficulties to achieve collective action

Honors College students at Purdue University are required to complete a capstone project as part of the curriculum. Many students experienced a disruption to their research plans in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In response, faculty launched a place-based research initiative to recruit students to be onsite researchers from wherever they were. A Foldit research group was created for students from biology-related majors.

In rural West Virginia, the First2 Network aims to improve STEM persistence by including students in creating solutions to STEM attrition. A research program for rising first-year students in STEM majors is discussed here. The authors assessed students’ STEM education and career plans, identity, efficacy, and sense of school of belonging before and after the program. Students’ STEM identity, efficacy, and school belonging improved after participation.

The COVID-19 pandemic precluded the summer supplemental REUs that were planned as part of a collaborative NSF grant. Instead, a hybrid, cross-country, REU experience during the academic year was created. The fellowships (20 hours per week for 20 weeks) involved three faculty mentoring five students from Florida State University (a research university) and Pacific University (a primarily undergraduate institution) in Oregon.

This research study at a National Science Foundation Research Experience for Undergraduates site focuses on psychological research with applications to the real world. Two cohorts of undergraduates engaged in rigorous research projects on, e.g., driving, homeland security, relationships, human-computer interaction, language comprehension and production, discrimination, and health psychology. Results indicated that students and mentors perceived an improvement in the students' research skills.
