We are proud to present the technical programme of the 5 th IEEE International Conference on Digital Ecosystems and Technologies (IEEE DEST 2011). We have had more than 180 papers submitted to the conference. The submitted manuscripts were subject to IEEE refereeing standard and each paper was reviewed by 3-5 independent reviewers from the international programme committee. IEEE DEST 2011 programme includes five technical tracks and three workshops. The conference is programmed over four days and provides a number of activities and opportunities for intellectual scientific discussion and exchange between the attendees. It additionally provides an extremely interesting social programme. Putting together a high-quality programme like this is always a team effort, and we would like to acknowledge many important contributions. First of all, we would like to thank all authors whose papers are presented in these IEEE DEST 2011 proceedings. We would like to thank all IEEE DEST 2011 keynote and invited plenary speakers who took great effort to synthesise their materials and presentations. Heartfelt thanks are also due to our Track and Workshop Chairs, as well as tutorial Chair for their efforts in soliciting qualified submissions and organising the review process. Finally, we would like to thank all IEEE DEST 2011 International Programme Committee members who volunteered their time and efforts to review and select the quality papers. We would also like to thank our Tutorial presenters for their dedication in bringing high quality materials to this conference. Finally, we would like to congratulate all participants and organisers of IEEE DEST 2011 for their effort in bring in a great success for the conference.

Business model engineering has recently witnessed a turning point in the history of the Internet. It is a real-time Web, which is different from the Internet of yesterday. This real-time Web is characterized by a network of real-time human responses. This has significant implications for mobile business ecosystems. The author presents a three-stage view of the Internet business models that lead to the real-time Web business model engineering of today. The author highlights some consequences of this turning point of the Internet from the perspective of business model engineering. The author discusses the implications for mobile business model engineering from this staged transition.
