The article deals with the phenomenon of intangible cultural heritage, the issues of its preservation and presentation in museums. The debatable nature of both normative documents and scientific approaches in the field of study and museum development of intangible cultural heritage is revealed, which allows stating the incompleteness of the process of its conceptualization. There is a significant impact of intangible cultural heritage on the dynamics and content of the main social functions of the museum in accordance with modern requirements for the implementation of an inclusive policy of collecting, exhibiting and educational activities. The recognition of the human factor as the cornerstone of the concept of intangible heritage makes it possible to record a shift in the development of cultural heritage from the passive perception of monuments and objects to participatory practices and interactive processes.

The article substantiates the significance of the refering to the mythological ideas of the ethnos about the structure of the universe, about the anthropomorphic spirits inhabiting the world. The semantics of images on drums is characterized as one of the categories of intangible cultural heritage that has a material embodiment. The possibility of reconstructing the semantics of anthropomorphic images on the drums of Shor shamans is considered. Interpretation based on the researchers' fixation data is defined as the main method of reconstruction. The results can be used in the cultural and educational activities of the museum. The preferred forms of this activity may be interactive excursions and master classes.

Drawing on the example of the work of biggest museum institutions of the today’s Russia, the author of the article describes peculiarities of open keeping of museum stock, interprets actual trend of development of Russian museum sector that lies in reverse a prohibition on open showing of most valuable part of museum items and collections. It is noticed that while maintaining keeping conditions and instrumentation of museum depository with engineering and technical means and systems, long-term safety of the most valuable museum items is beyond danger.
