Non-standard words as features for text categorization 非标准词作为文本分类的特征

This paper presents categorization of Croatian texts using Non-Standard Words (NSW) as features. NonStandard Words are: numbers, dates, acronyms, abbreviations, currency, etc. NSWs in Croatian language are determined according to Croatian NSW taxonomy. For the purpose of this research, 390 text documents were collected and formed the SKIPEZ collection with 6 classes: official, literary, informative, popular, educational and scientific. Text categorization experiment was conducted on three different representations of the SKIPEZ collection: in the first representation, the frequencies of NSWs are used as features; in the second representation, the statistic measures of NSWs (variance, coefficient of variation, standard deviation, etc.) are used as features; while the third representation combines the first two feature sets. Naive Bayes, CN2, C4.5, kNN, Classification Trees and Random Forest algorithms were used in text categorization experiments. The best categorization results are achieved using the first feature set (NSW frequencies) with the categorization accuracy of 87%. This suggests that the NSWs should be considered as features in highly inflectional languages, such as Croatian. NSW based features reduce the dimensionality of the feature space without standard lemmatization procedures, and therefore the bag-of-NSWs should be considered for further Croatian texts categorization experiments.

Internet of things cloud mediator platform 物联网云中介平台

Internet of things (IoT) will connect a huge amount of devices to the Internet. There will also be many applications that will use the generated data to provide a service to end-user. This presents a problem in situations when the application owner is not the device owner. Application owner needs to find and contact the owners of the devices that provide the data he needs. When done by a human, this process lasts a long time and costs a lot of money. In this paper, we propose a middleware architecture that connects the appropriate devices and applications. It is based on software agents representing devices and applications negotiating between each other on the terms by which the data can be used.

Edge detection in segmented non-convex space polygon 分割非凸空间多边形的边缘检测

Survey data in use in Civil Engineering consists of points described with XYZ coordinates. Closed shapes, like lakes described with a number of such points are immediately recognizable to humans although points are grouped in unconnected and unrelated lines. Automatic processing of those closed shapes is required if computer analysis is to be performed, i.e. we would like to produce a finite element mesh of the lake. In order to perform meshing one has to be able to determine whether a point is inside or outside of the space polygon, i.e. polygon edges have to be detected. Special computer procedures have been developed for edge detection. The most challenging part is detection of overlaps of edge lines which has been solved with specially modified Fourier transform procedure. Above procedures are applied on a real-life example for creating a finite element mesh of lake “Botonega” in Istria.

Cloud based laboratory for distance education 基于云的远程教育实验室

Today's dynamic life has changed the traditional teaching from the classroom and laboratory based classical learning to an approach using online and distance e-Learning. Universities usually follow this trend and enable their resources as online utilities for the students. There are several ways to offer these facilities online and cloud is the most promising one when analyzing several criteria. The cloud technology provides many benefits reducing the overall cost and improving the business continuity. In this paper we present an idea how to transfer the traditional computer laboratory into a cloud based utility using open source cloud frameworks. This transformation creates a dynamic, flexible, elastic, reliable and modern laboratory that can serve the students as a tool for distance learning for many courses simultaneously. It acts on a “Lab as a Service” principle.

Evaluation study and results of intelligent pedagogical agent-led learning scenarios in a virtual world 虚拟世界中智能教学主体主导学习场景的评价研究与结果

The use of intelligent pedagogical agents (IPAs) has shown to provide positive learning results and new learning possibilities. The IPA has specific importance in immersive learning environments to enable 24/7 availability, offer a learning companion opportunity, and increase learner engagement. In that regard, a proof of concept prototype implementation of an intelligent pedagogical agent (IPA) in the Open Wonderland virtual world environment was created. This paper reports a qualitative evaluation study and experiment performed by a team of six experts in relevant areas of expertise. Those areas include cognitive science, computer science, e-education, and virtual worlds. The experiment studied key prototype components in relation to four learning scenarios with distributed control between the learner avatar and the pedagogical agent to answer questions relevant to their effect on learning attributes such as motivation, engagement, and the learning experience. Given the qualitative nature of the experiment, the paper also analyzes and reports results relevant to expert input of how the prototype can better contribute to future pedagogical agent realizations and the impact on learning enhancement.

The implementation of iPads in the process of teaching and learning brings new opportunities for teachers and learners in and beyond the classroom. This work deals with the experience of the very first five months of the 1:1 model of implementation of iPads in foreign language classes with 11 and 12-year-olds in a primary school in Rijeka, Croatia.

Simulation study of aging in CMOS binary adders CMOS二进制加法器老化的仿真研究

Hot carrier injection (HCI) and negative bias temperature instability (NBTI) become dominant reliability issues in nanometer CMOS technology. These aging effects can induce additional delay which will be accumulated through logic gates and thus degrade the performance of the circuits. This paper discusses performance degradations induced by aging mechanisms in digital integrated circuits. We propose an aging-aware synthesis flow taking into account NBTI and HCI. This flow is demonstrated through the implementation of several architectures of adders using CMOS technology. The simulation results show that Kogge-Stone Adder (KSA) and SKlansky Adder (SKA) are the best solutions whether in terms of the complexity or the resistance to aging effects with induced delay degradation below 0.35%.

Information competences — Students' perspective 信息能力——学生的视角

Modern society is characterized by an increasing complexity of tasks which require broad general knowledge and on the other hand a narrow specialization. Because of these conflicting principles modern education recognized the need for development of generic competences on the one hand, and information competences that match the modern information society on the other. In addition to education, which has recognized the need to develop generic and information competences, employers also pay great attention to these competences while hiring. In modern information society information competences become one of the fundamental basis for the development of other generic competences. Information and generic competences are directly linked because information is a fundamental element of learning which is based on the collection, organization, search and interpretation of acquired information. Development of modern information environment is characterized by growing complexity in quantitative and qualitative terms that require additional research of information competences required for the transition from the tertiary education sector to the labour market. This paper presents a survey of students' attitudes about the development of information competences during the study and their opinions about necessary information competences for their future professional careers.

Development of modern information environment is characterized by growing complexity in quantitative and qualitative terms that require additional research of information competences required for the transition from the tertiary education sector to the labour market. Online vs. Paper-based testing: A comparison of test results 在线测试与纸质测试:测试结果的比较

This paper presents the results of a comparative research of paper-based testing versus online testing using MudRi. The research was conducted on three courses at the Department of Informatics, University of Rijeka, and included 1231 tests. In observed courses, online tests have largely replaced traditional paper-based tests in the last few years. Therefore, the aim of this research was to determine whether the online testing results differ from the results of traditional paper-based tests. The research results showed that, for the observed courses, the median values of the results achieved during MudRi online tests and traditional paper based tests are not significantly different when online tests include certain percentage of subjective test questions.

Learning management systems: Trends and alternatives 学习管理系统:趋势和替代方案

One of the main difficulties in Learning Management Systems (LMS) is how to maintain the balance between learning and management. The primary aim of LMSs was to assist educators to manage learning. As a result of this way of thinking, features such as managing content, roster students, and similar, mostly were promoted. As time goes by, the accent of research is more in student experiences and efficacy of the tools. On the other hand some educators argue that as a result of evolving Web 2.0 applications, students can be better served by an LMS alternative, a toolbox of web resources that could contain social bookmarking tools, document sharing applications, social networking applications, timeline tools, and media options offered in the cloud. Primary to this approach is the idea that students should become more experienced with today's technology tools since these skills will be practical in the workplace. As a result, some institutions have begun to offer LMS alternatives, and some teachers are using these options to support their students' learning. The paper analyses both sides of the latest approach toward LMSs and presents their implications for teaching and learning.
