Accessibility and Disability Services in Virginia’s Four-Year Academic Libraries: A Content Analysis of Library Webpages
Pub Date : 2020-06-02 DOI: 10.21061/valib.v64i1.600
K. Vaughan, S. Warlick
Academic libraries serve a wide range of students, faculty, and staff with diverse needs for library accessibility, including people with temporary and chronic disabilities. The social model of disability frames an approach to library support for this population that is grounded in social justice and the library’s role in minimizing barriers to library access. Promoting accessible library services and spaces via the library’s website is an important component. This study analyzed the library websites of forty Virginia four-year academic institutions to identify current practices in the state for including an accessibility or disability services webpage or online policy statement. This content was found on eleven library websites. Naming conventions, location in the site architecture, and an analysis of content were explored. Based on this analysis, the authors conclude with two sets of recommendations for libraries wishing to edit or create their own accessibility services page for their website.

Serving Military Families in the Public Library
Pub Date : 2019-01-09 DOI: 10.21061/VALIB.V63I1.1480
Jan Marry
Military families have unique, and perhaps hidden, needs that public libraries are well positioned to meet. Virginia has many military families and they live all over the state.  Librarians can serve military families by considering the unique needs of military families in their regular services or by specific military family programming. For more than a decade the author has provided and observed many programs and services for military families in public libraries. This paper aims to help public librarians in Virginia design a variety of library services, programs, and collection development strategies to better serve military families. It concludes with: discussion questions to generate ideas for program planning for this audience at your library, and is followed by two appendices: (Appendix I) a sidebar with examples of the value of libraries for military families from my own military family’s experience and (Appendix II) a comprehensive list of children's and teen books featuring military children.

VLA: the Place to Connect with Your Colleagues, Enhance Your Skills, and Revolutionize Our Profession VLA:

I never cease to be amazed at the dedication and devotion carried on daily by my fellow library workers! As I write this, elections for the next President-Elect and Secretary for the Virginia Library Association (VLA) are underway, causing me to step back in recollection over the past year as your president. Important things are always happening in our libraries and I felt privileged to learn more about your experiences as well as how many things we have in common, regardless of what prefix rests in front of the word Library for you.

The "Novel" Approach: Using Fiction to Increase Empathy “小说”方法:用小说来增加同理心
Pub Date : 2018-07-23 DOI: 10.21061/VALIB.V63I1.1474
Dora Rowe
Recent studies in a variety of disciplines have linked the reading of fiction specifically with measurable increases in empathy using both self-reported instruments and neurological examinations. Through a review of the recent studies and experimental evidence, the author contends that empathy can be trained using fiction through specific titles chosen and/or guided discussions. The act of transportation into the story and identification with the characters can lead to substantive changes in perception and world view. Therefore, fiction collections in academic libraries provide a needed resource and should be considered as such.
