The Well of Loneliness, Radclyffe Hall’s most famous and most discussed novel, is considered one of the pillars of lesbian literature and historiography. In the same year of its publication, 1928, it undergoes a trial in England for obscenity because it was considered an “obscene libel” and was immediately censored as the first novel to deal openly with desire between women.The Well of Loneliness is an emblematic text and its story is exemplary for the understanding of that attempt to remove lesbianism in a patriarchal and heteronormative society. The aim is to draw a general picture of the construction of lesbian identity and its (in)visibility in the public space in the first half of the twentieth century, in particular between the twenties and thirties, trying to analyze the cultural, social and medico-legal framework in which Radclyffe Hall, Lesbian Identity and The Well of Loneliness are inserted.

The article describes the activity of an italian committee created in Eritrea after the Second World War to dealing with War graves and tracing the missing. Using journalistic sources (particularly the Italian press published in Asmara), documents and the results of historiography, the article analyzes the committe’s action in the Eritrean context, between political struggle and international debates on the fate of the territory. The committee was an important emanation of the Italian community; it celebrated the story of the ex colonial soldiers and worked to construct an orphanage in Adi Quala.

“Noi giovani”. Costruzioni narrative e immaginario collettivo sui giovani tra Settecento e Novecento “我们年轻人”。关于18到20岁年轻人的叙事和集体想象结构

At the end of the eighteenth century, on the influence of Rousseau’s production, and thanks to that series of social transformations that are at the basis of the birth of bourgeois society, a new social category appears on the public scene, that of the “young”, which since then it will be decisive and at the center of every theory and public discourse. Constructed and imagined by literature, during the nineteenth century the figure of the “young man” was consolidated and built around some paradigms: self-affirmation, the – often violent – contrast with the generation of fathers, the need to impose himself as hero and rejection of the adult world. The present essay traces these characteristic traits of the construction of the image of youth through some of the main literary contributions of the time, up to the First World War: the Great War marks, in fact, for the category of “youth” the passage from myth to history.

La destra reazionaria dal Ku Klux Klan a Trump which focuses on the evolution of the US reactionary right from the second half of the 19th century up to Donald Trump.A reactionary world that has thus spanned the entire 20th century and has landed between the 20th and 21st centuries in the forms of the Alt-Right and extreme conspiracy theories, elements that fuelled the assault on Capitol Hill in January 2021.

Questo saggio esplora il rapporto fra turismo e shopping portando l’attenzione su Riccione, una delle capitali del turismo balneare italiano. Come ricorda Dallen Timothy, la pratica del consumo non si incentra solo sui prodotti ma anche sui luoghi, contribuendo a dare forma alla città (Timothy 2005, p. 11). Nelle destinazioni turistiche, poi, gli spazi per gli acquisti si intrecciano con quelli delle altre attività ricreative, creando dinamiche spesso originali. Nel caso di Riccione la dialettica fra turismo balneare e shopping, fra spiaggia e centro commerciale trova la sua sintesi in viale Ceccarini, il lungo viale che portava dal vecchio borgo al mare e che diventa nel Novecento il fulcro dello shopping e della vita sociale. Parafrasando A. Corbin (1990) possiamo dire che la conquête du rivage a Riccione passò attraverso l’invenzione fisica e simbolica di questo viale e dello stile di vita che esso incarnava, specchio dell’abbondanza e della felicità della società dei consumi. This essay explores the relationship between tourism and shopping focusing on Riccione, one of the most popular destinations of Italian seaside tourism. As Dallen Timothy points out, consumption is not only about products: it is also about consuming places, and it thus contributes to shaping the city (Timothy 2005, p. 11). In tourist destinations, spaces for retail are intertwined with those for other recreational activities, often creating unique dynamics. In Riccione, the dialectic between seaside tourism and shopping and between the beach and the shopping streets in the city centre is especially epitomized by Viale Ceccarini, the long avenue that once connected the old village with the sea. In the 20th century, the street became the heart of shopping and social life. Paraphrasing A. Corbin (1990), we can say that the conquête du rivage in Riccione stems from the physical and symbolic invention of this avenue and the lifestyle it embodied, mirroring the abundance and happiness of the consumer society.

L’obiettivo del presente contributo è quello di esplorare la natura e la caratterizzazione dell’offerta di attività economiche urbane etnicamente connotate e quali siano le dinamiche evolutive in atto, con l’intento di definire alcune questioni emergenti e proporle all’agenda dei decisori pubblici come tema da trattare negli strumenti di governo del territorio. A partire dall’analisi delle posizioni ricorrenti nel dibattito internazionale sul tema, si approfondisce il caso del comparto Sarpi-Canonica-Bramante a Milano, caratterizzato da un’offerta di attività economiche urbane di matrice cinese. Lo studio del processo di formazione e consolidamento di questo sistema – che si configura come un laboratorio di integrazione culturale, funzionale ed economica – permette di riflettere sul ruolo che queste attività possono avere nel configurare ed abitare gli spazi pubblici della città post-pandemica.The aim of the present paper is to explore the nature and characterisation of ethnic diversity in urban economic activities available today and the ongoing development of these establishments. In doing so, we may identify some emerging issues and have policymakers add them to their agenda as topics of discussion for local government strategies. After reviewing the recurring positions in the international debate on the subject, this paper explores the case of the Sarpi-Canonica-Bramante area in Milan, which is characterised by a unique range of economic activities of Chinese origin. We then study how this system started, strengthened and how it has become a workshop for cultural, functional and economic integration. This analysis allows us to reflect on the role these businesses may play in shaping and inhabiting the public spaces of the post-pandemic urban context.

La Bolognina è storicamente ritenuto il più grande quartiere operaio bolognese. Negli anni Trenta la sua crescita è tale da rendere evidente la necessità, per le autorità fasciste, di una sua funzionale integrazione nella città organizzata. Le modalità privilegiate sono quelle di una nazionalizzazione piccolo-borghese fondata sull’intrusione senza precedenti del pubblico negli spazi anche privati della città, in termini di pratiche abitative, uso dello spazio urbano e logiche dei consumi. Tra questi specifici percorsi è in particolare l’ultimo quello su cui più mi concentro, quello che, finora, meno ha goduto dell’attenzione degli storici. Quello dove un ruolo significativo viene assunto dalle vie dei negozi e dagli spazi connessi al dettaglio commerciale, dai commercianti e dalle loro vetrine elevate ora a “nuovi e molto trasparenti confini tra pubblico e privato”. Bolognina is considered the largest historic working-class district in Bologna. Given its rapid growth during the 1930s, fascist authorities decided it was time to integrate it with the city at the functional level. Their preferred strategy was a petit-bourgeois nationalization based on an unprecedented intrusion of the public even into the city’s private spaces, by way of housing practices, use of urban space and consumption patterns. Among these issues, the latter is the one I will focus on the most since it is the one that has so far received the least attention from historians. Shopping streets, retail spaces, shopkeepers and their shop windows – which have now become “new and rather transparent borders between public and private” – play a crucial role dealing with this theme.

Il contributo indaga le ultime istanze del retail design collegate alla vendita omnicanale che ha ricadute anche nel contesto urbano, modificando l’organizzazione ambientale del negozio e la relazione con lo spazio cittadino. Personalizzazione, inclusione, esperienza digitale – lungo un processo definito dalla letteratura sui negozi e i consumi in termini di retailtainment – guidano negli ultimi anni, e sempre di più dopo le vicende pandemiche, il progetto di architettidesigner e sviluppatori di software per la vendita off e on line, confermando la pronosticata convergenza tra mondo fisico e digitale (phygital). In questo scenario in fieri, dove i feedback forniti dai social sono già inclusi tra i fattori cruciali d’acquisto, i colossi dell’on-line sperimentano punti vendita reali con vetrine interattive, uso di fotocamere e sensori per l’acquisto senza cassa, e la grande distribuzione si ridimensiona con concept store nei centri storici cercando l’integrazione con la vita del quartiere. The present paper investigates the latest developments in retail space design related to omnichannel retail. The latter also has an impact on the city, transforming the stores’ layout design and their relationship with the urban context. In recent years, customisation, inclusiveness and digital experience, the key features of the so-called retailtainment – a term coined by the literature on retail spaces and consumption – have inspired the projects of architects, designers and software developers for online and offline retail, and increasingly so after the pandemic, confirming the predicted convergence of physical and digital (phygital) worlds. In this scenario in the making, with social networks influencing purchasing decisions, on-line giants have been using stores to experiment with interactive shop windows, the use of cameras and sensors for checkout-free shopping. Large retailers, on the other hand, are experimenting with smaller store formats such as concept stores, located in city centres and thus seeking integration with the neighbourhood.

L’articolo riflette sugli immaginari legati al commercio a partire da una ricerca in corso sulla pianificazione e realizzazione dei quartieri PEEP italiani. La legge 167 (1962) e una serie di provvedimenti successivi rappresentarono, nelle intenzioni dei loro promotori, un momento fondativo per la costruzione di una nuova generazione di quartieri a grande scala capaci di generare nuove forme di urbanità. Quale ruolo ebbe il commercio all’interno di un simile processo? Appoggiandosi a un piccolo numero di studi di caso, la ricerca enuncia l’ipotesi che portare il fuoco dell’osservazione sulla questione del commercio permetta di cogliere alcuni dei nodi irrisolti dietro le sperimentazioni del secondo dopoguerra intorno alla “grande dimensione”. A differenza di quanto accaduto in diverse esperienze internazionali del periodo nel campo dell’urban design, le culture architettoniche e urbanistiche italiane faticarono a riconoscere nell’emergente dimensione del consumo di massa il possibile fondamento di nuove forme di socialità e di cittadinanza.The article reflects on the images related to commerce, taking the lead from ongoing research on the planning and implementation of Italian PEEP (Plans for Economic and Public Housing) schemes. In the intentions of their promoters, Law 167 (1962) and a series of subsequent measures represented a founding moment for the construction of a new generation of large-scale residential neighborhoods capable of generating new forms of urbanity. What role did commerce play within such a process? Relying on a small number of case studies, the research formulates the hypothesis that focusing on the issue of commerce allows us to address some of the unresolved questions behind the post-World War II experiments around the issue of the grande dimensione (‘great dimension’). Unlike several international experiences of the time in the field of urban design, Italian architectural and urban cultures struggled to recognize in the emerging mass consumption the possible foundation of new forms of sociality and citizenship.
