Levi ben Gershom, known as Gersonides (1288–1344), was one of the most influential Medieval Jewish philosophers, and surely the most renowned among Hebrew-writing Jewish authors active in Provence during the Late Middle Ages. Possibly born in Orange (now in the French department of Vaucluse), he spent all his life near the area of the Rhone Delta; for a period he was at the papal court, then in Avignon, where he acted as an official astronomer and astrologer— and maybe as a physician too. Many of Gersonides’ minor works are of scientific interest since they concern the different fields of logic, arithmetic, geometry, musicology, and astronomy; however, his major and best-known writings, in approximate chronological order, are the following:

Theon was a teacher of Platonism and an exegete of Plato’s text in the flourishing town of Smyrna during the first and second century of our age (fl. 125 A. D.). The Expositio is the only work of Theon that has been transmitted to us. It is an important witness in order to grasp not only the approach to mathematics (arithmetic, music and astronomy) typical of a middle-Platonist, but also (and above all) the exegetic aims of this project. Here the Expositio is translated ininto Italian for the first time, with a deep revisal of the Teubner text. The commentary shows that this work is a technical exegesis of the Timaeus, an attempt to argue that Plato has grasped in the most authentic way the true structure of the cosmos. On this basis, it is possible to see at work methods, intentions and strategies of a middle-Platonist engaged in the reargumentation of the Timaeus.

The "Mantissa" is a collection of short discussions, transmitted as a supplement to the treatise "On the Soul" by the Aristotelian commentator Alexander of Aphrodisias (c.200 AD). The collection includes discussion of a range of topics, among them the nature of soul and intellect, theories of how seeing takes place, issues in ethics, and the nature of fate.

Medicine, astronomy, dealing with numbers - even the cultures of the "pre-modern" world offer a rich spectrum of scientific texts. But how are they best translated? Is it sufficient to translate the sources into modern scientific language, and thereby, above all, to identify their deficits? Or would it be better to adopt the perspective of the sources themselves, strange as they are, only for them not to be properly understood by modern readers? Renowned representatives of various disciplines and traditions present a controversial and constructive discussion of these problems.
