The ‘Vatican Epithalamion’ (BAV Vat. gr. 1851) was recently dated by Peter Schreiner to 1271 or 1272. In this paper, I present an additional argument for his dating by comparing the Epithalamion’s zoomorphic initial letters with those found in two other codices datable to the reign of Michael VIII Palaeologus: a Gospelbook (Mount Athos, Iviron Monastery, 5) and a Psalter (Jerusalem, Greek Patriarchal Library, Παναγίου Τάφου 51). This comparison suggests also that zoomorphic ornament functioned at the time as a marker of social status.

A Byzantine text, ascribed to a “consul of the philosophers”, applies the “language of the givens” to the main circles on the celestial sphere, showing which of them are “given”, and in what sense. This text is here presented, edited, translated, and compared with its source. A discussion about the author of the text is also provided.

This paper aims to draft an overview of what being a midwife in Byzantium meant, according to the literary sources. Midwife in Byzantium appears to be a rather complex and elusive figure to study. This is due to both the scarce references in the sources and the vague definition of midwifery itself in the ancient world. The main fields of activity of Byzantine midwives were three: medical, religious and care. As a first attempt of studying Byzantine midwife all-round, this paper ends by suggesting further research perspectives in order to get a clearer and more complete understanding of such figure.

Multilayered authorship can be found in the Excerpta Historica Constantiniana (EC), a Byzantine collection from the tenth century. The contribution focuses on the tension between the EC primary sources and the EC context as such, exploring the conceptual tool of Distributed Authorship and engaging both with the sender/receiver functions and with the power relations between the emperor and the excerptor(es). The EC Prooemium draws on the New Testament, namely, on the Epistle to the Ephesians, which in turn sheds light on Constantine VII’s cultural, political and religious agenda.

This study is conducted through the form of a triptych. In the first part, we evoke the unprecedented situation in which the three monotheisms stand before the images, due, among other factors, to the Internet. We also aim to specify the meaning of every term used, in order to avoid simplifications in regard to their respective connections with the images. The second part, that is, the central panel of the triptych, intends to recall how each of the three religions, especially in its beginnings, dealt with images in general, and images of religious inspiration in particular. The third part examines the possible link between the hostility of nascent Islam towards the images and the well-known Controversy in Byzantium, also advocating the creation, within each of the three religions, of competent instances to designate those images that represent them properly.
