This chapter explores the limitations and barriers to creating Nature Rx programs. Some of these limitations include climate and geography while others include structures of institutions. The chapter concludes with suggestions about how to measure the effectiveness of these programs and the future potential of Nature Rx programs in ameliorating the health and mental health challenges found on campus.

The chapter traces the history of how physicians began prescribing time in nature. Steps in developing a campus-based Nature Rx program include: organizing a committed group with broad representation across campus, securing support among top administrators, inventorying available green spaces, engaging students, intentionally partnering with health and counseling services, developing easily usable apps and/or websites, cultivating relationships with relevant academic programs, developing an approach to effectively evaluating the program, identifying challenges, and finally modelling the desired behavior around time in nature.

They explore the results of surveys that indicate rising levels of anxiety and depression in addition to other mental health concerns among student populations, including some of the potential causes of this trend. The chapter concludes with a review of how campus health clinics are responding to this increasing demand for mental health care, including different public health approaches that have been found to be effective on various campuses. This broad public health approach provides the foundation for the development of programs that encourage students to spend time in nature as a response to mental health concerns.
