The purpose of the paper is to identify the factors influencing the quality of life of retired older adults from urban areas in Romania. The research question is whether their socio-demographic indices, chronic conditions, body mass index, eating habits, sleep, way of spending free time and physical activity correlate with the Quality of Life Index. The research included 172 retired older adults from urban areas in Romania, who expressed their interest in the activities proposed by the research team to promote a healthy lifestyle and who met the required inclusion criteria. To identify the factors influencing the quality of life of older adults in Romania, all participants were invited to complete the Quality of Life Questionnaire – Short form (WHOQOL-BREF) proposed by the World Health Organization. In addition, the research participants completed a questionnaire that included items about: certain socio-demographic characteristics; health status; height, weight; eating habits; night sleep; way of spending free time. Participants indicated the leisure activities performed in the previous week and filled in the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly. Statistics showed that the Quality of Life Index did not correlate with the marital status, gender, level of education and monthly income of the research participants or the PASE total score. It can be highlighted that, for the older adults investigated by us, the most important factors for their quality of life are: health, diet, sleep, spending free time and, to a certain extent, physical activity. Among the PASE indices, the Quality of Life Index poorly correlated only with leisure physical activity.

Identification of the somatic and motor profile of students at risk of social and educational exclusion can be a factor of diagnosis but also of prognosis in terms of planning the content of various sports activities in order to integrate them. In this context, 189 students from North-Eastern Romania were included in the research. Gender distribution indicates that there are 104 boys and 85 girls. Participants are enrolled at the “Cezar Botez” Middle School in Fâstâci (57 students) and the Middle School no. 1 - Racova, Gârceni (132 students). The current research aims to outline the somatic and motor profile of boys in the North-East region by area of residence, the somatic and motor profile of girls in the North-East region by area of residence, the somatic and motor profile of boys in the North-East region by age and the somatic and motor profile of girls in the North-East region by age. The results obtained in somatic tests (height, weight, arm span, body mass index for teenagers) for the North-East region of the country were analysed as well as the results recorded in motor tests (4 x 10 m Shuttle Run, Standing Long Jump, T-Test). This research is part of the project “Sustainable social and educational integration through sports activities” (PNP001).

A sprained ankle is one of the most common joint injuries. This traumatic and painful injury is caused by abnormal stress on the capsular ligament complex and occurs secondary to a movement that forces it to stretch beyond its normal range without losing permanent contact between the joint surfaces. In the United States, the incidence of ankle sprain in the general population (between 2002 and 2006) was 2.15 per 1000 person-years, the highest rates being associated with the age of 10 to 19 years. For people aged 15-24, the incidence was considerably higher in men compared to women, while for those over 30, the incidence was higher in women than men. Epidemiological statistics showed that almost half of all ankle sprains occurred during athletic activities. The motivation for choosing this topic is to highlight the benefits of using the Biodex System 4 Pro in the recovery program for junior footballers with grade II ankle sprains. The assessment made by this device provides information on joint mobility and muscle strength; therefore, the programs used in the recovery process can be performed without putting pressure on the joint and within the range and speed parameters set by the physiotherapist (especially passive, isotonic, isometric and isokinetic ones in the eccentric or concentric mode). The study has shown that the Biodex System 4 Pro is very helpful in optimising the recovery process because it offers the possibility to work in the isokinetic mode, which reduces the functional recovery period and ensures the return to sport in a minimum time

Abstract. The purpose of the research is to determine and explain the effects of a combined workout training consisting in tennis specific sprints combined with a plyometric training. Our objectives were to analyze the effects of this type of combined training on the variable performance movements in tennis. This training has been performed for 10 weeks, three times/week with a total of 30 sessions. Forty-eight male adolescent tennis players, aged between 14 and 16 years old, participated in this study. They were divided into two groups, a control group of 23 subjects and an experimental group of 25 subjects. The participants had to have a minimum experience of 2 years of participating in competitions at a national level. The physical tests that have been used to measure their performances were: added steps, the Spider test, Illinois agility test and T-test. The statistical program used for analyzing the data was the program named SPSS version 24. To verify the obtained results, several statistical tests have been used, such as T-Test for independent samples, Pearson correlation and paired t-test. Following statistical analysis of data, it was concluded that the two groups differ significantly in terms of tennis movements performance, after the application of the training program (the results of the experiment group are better than those of the control group at the end of the intervention).

The period marked by the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools to switch to digitalisation, and their adaptation to the new reality has led to the constant use of online technology in all instructive-educational and therapeutic activities. Numerous posts and articles on the Internet provided useful information and advice aimed to teach parents how to work with their children at home, how to team up with the therapist. Physical therapists, children and the parents of children included in the physiotherapy programme had to adapt to the situation, learn new things and get used to online technological means. Therapists had to analyse each case with the patient’s family and identify the best remote therapeutic intervention for the child. Naturally, the sudden transition to online activity creates difficulties in performing the distance activities proposed during this period. The purpose of the current research was to find out to what extent online physical therapy was implemented and what communication channels were used during the suspension of classes in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The study was carried out in October 2020. This questionnaire-based quantitative research was conducted on a convenience sample (n = 45). The research included the parents whose children participated in the physiotherapy programme. Statistical data analysis was performed using the SPSS software. The conclusion drawn from this research is that the most used communication channel between parents and physiotherapist regarding the implementation of online physical therapy was video communication (Google Meet, Zoom, WebEx, Skype).

The category of large-sized athletes is one of interest from the perspective of the evolution of their physical characteristics both during their careers and in the post-activity period. This study evaluates the impact that the integration of biomechanical elements can have on the sports careers of rugby players, this being a positive prognostic factor for the improvement of their performance, the efficiency of their recovery from injury and the preservation of a satisfactory health status allowing them to engage in physical activity in the post-performance stage. Four former rugby players participated in the study. The research was conducted at the Techirghiol Spa and Recovery Sanatorium with the help of a multidisciplinary team. The study provides the following conclusions: after evaluation, former rugby athletes show certain sequelae from the practice of contact sports (rugby), particularly in the joint and spine areas, which causes changes in their biomechanical parameters; the pain threshold felt by former elite athletes is higher. Post-performance, these athletes require careful monitoring to maintain the functionality of their joints, live normal lives and carry out regular activities; recovery treatment, physical therapy and balneotherapy positively influence the general health of former rugby players.

Modern volleyball mainly relies on the explosive power of the lower extremities to reach maximum height when specific actions that require jumping need to be performed: spiking, blocking, jump set and jump serve. The purpose of this systematic review is to identify the effects/effectiveness of plyometric training on vertical jump height in junior female volleyball players. The search was performed in the PubMed, Medline, Google Scholar and ScienceDirect databases. The selection included randomised and non-randomised controlled studies that were published in the last 30 years, used samples of junior female volleyball players (aged 10-19) and incorporated plyometric training performed for at least 2 weeks to develop vertical jump; in the reviewed studies, vertical jump height was measured using the squat jump, countermovement jump or drop jump. Analysis of the 14 selected studies highlighted that the effects of plyometric training on vertical jump performance were moderate when the intervention lasted about 4-6 weeks and considerably improved when plyometric training lasted over 8 weeks. In conclusion, regardless of the duration or volume of the intervention, plyometric training seems to be safe and effective but not always sufficient to improve vertical jump height in junior female volleyball players. However, we believe that further studies are needed to determine the potentially moderating effects of age, gender and expertise level, taking into account the physical parameters specific to the development of vertical jump in junior female volleyball players through plyometric training.

The paper aims to highlight the existence of innovative means for muscle conditioning (and strengthening) provided by the fitness and wellness industry. In this context, we want to increase interest in leisure physical activities by emphasising the effectiveness of EMS (Electrical Muscle Stimulation) fitness technology to improve physical condition. The research has assumed that good physical condition in adults is the result of maintaining the body mass index (BMI) at a normal value, which is not necessarily associated with intense physical activity, and this ideal (aspiration) can be reached through EMS fitness training. The quasi-experiment was conducted at the XBody Titan Studio in Bucharest, sector 3, between November 2020 and March 2021, and involved 60 people (generally motivated by the desire to adjust fat deposits) for whom data sheets were prepared with somatic indicators, BMI and the Squat test. The sheets were drawn up during the first training session and completed monthly. In December 2020, online questionnaires were administered to both people engaged in EMS fitness training and physical education and sport specialists, being then analysed and interpreted. The specific EMS fitness training programme using XBody equipment was performed twice a week, and the results were tabulated, statistically processed, interpreted and graphically represented. Among the most important conclusions of the paper, we mention: the values of somatic indicators (weight) and BMI decrease from the first phase of XBody training, and energy consumption is higher due to increased muscle activity.

Good physical fitness plays a positive role in work and life: first, it is the basis of people’s lives and work; second, it helps to master complex technical movements and improve sports performance; third, it supports heavy load training or high intensity work. In recent years, the development of sports activities can promote the improvement of preschooler’s physical quality and reduce the obesity rate and a series of physical health problems induced by obesity. At present, there are various sports activity courses in and outside kindergarten for parents and preschoolers to choose. By consulting the CNKI, Web of Science and other databases about sports intervention and preschooler’s physical fitness, this paper summarises the findings of some studies on the influence of different sports activities (including preschool football, basketball, Taekwondo, roller skating and fitness courses) on children’s physical quality in the last 10 years. The results show that different sports have different effects on the development of preschooler’s physical fitness, and each has its own focus. This paper provides some reference for the research of the related courses for preschool children in the later period. When parents plan the physical education course in combination with the actual physical activities of preschoolers, the conclusion of this review has certain practical significance.

In the context of the pandemic period, basketball competitions have undergone changes in their organisational structure, so playing games in the form of a “bubble” tournament required adequate training. Due to the rapid pace of play during the “bubble” competitions, junior basketball players need to have very good anaerobic and aerobic capacity. Intensification of the competitive effort by increasing the speed of movement and execution, making fast breaks, performing bouncing passes and throws to the basket, fighting to recover the ball and using the active defence (pressing) all over the court imposes high demands on the body at the somatic and vegetative levels. The purpose of the present study is to assess the anaerobic capacity of junior players (U16) in the pre-competitive period, given that their training was interrupted between March and September 2020 by the legislative norms on sports activity due to the situation of the COVID-19 pandemic in Romania. The ascertaining study was conducted in January 2021 on the CSU Știința Bucharest team players aged 15-16 years. The tests applied to assess their anaerobic capacity consisted of Countermovement Jump (CMJ) and acceleration speed (5 m, 10 m and 15 m). The data were collected using the computerised Optojump and Tag Heurer - Chronoprinter 520 techniques.
