Effects of Storm Waves Caused by Typhoon Bolaven (1215) on Korean Coast: A Comparative Analysis with Deepwater Design Waves 台风博拉文(1215 年)造成的风暴潮对韩国海岸的影响:与深水设计波浪的比较分析

: This paper employs the third-generation simulating waves nearshore (SWAN) ocean wave model to estimate and analyze storm waves induced by Typhoon Bolaven, focusing on its impact along the west coast and Jeju Island of Korea. Utilizing reanalyzed meteorological data from the Japan Meteorological Agency meso scale model (JMA-MSM), the study simulated storm waves from Typhoon Bolaven, which maintained its intensity up to high latitudes as it approached the Korean Peninsula in 2012. Validation of the SWAN model against observed wave data demonstrated a strong correlation, particularly in regions where wind speeds exceeded 20 m/s and wave heights surpassed 5 m. Results indicate significant storm wave heights across Jeju Island and Korea's west and southwest seas, with coastal grid points near islands recording storm wave heights exceeding 90% of the 50-year return period design wave heights. Notably, specific grid points near islands in the northern West Sea and southwest Jeju Island estimated storm wave heights at 90.22% and 91.48% of the design values, respectively. Development of Strength Evaluation Methodology for Independent IMO TYPE C Tank with LH2 Carriers 为独立的 IMO C 型液化氢储罐开发强度评估方法

: Given the inadequate regulatory framework for liquefied hydrogen gas storage tanks on ships and the limitations of the IGC Code, designed for liquefied natural gas, this study introduces a critical assessment procedure to ensure the safety and suitability of such tank designs. This study performed a heat transfer analysis for boil-off gas (BOG) calculations and established separate design load cases to evaluate the yielding and buckling strength. In addition, the study assessed methodologies for both high-cycle and low-cycle fatigue assessments, complemented by comprehensive structural integrity evaluations using finite element analysis. A comprehensive approach was developed to assess the structural integrity of Type C tanks by conducting crack propagation analysis and comparing these results with the IGC Code criteria. The practicality and efficacy of these methods were validated through their application on a 23K-class liquefied hydrogen carrier at the concept design stage. These findings may have important implications for enhancing safety standards and regulatory policies

Optimization Analysis of the Shape and Position of a Submerged Breakwater for Improving Floating Body Stability 优化分析水下防波堤的形状和位置以提高浮体稳定性

: Submerged breakwaters can be installed underneath floating structures to reduce the external wave loads acting on the structure. The objective of this study was to establish an optimization analysis framework to determine the corresponding shape and position of the submerged breakwater that can minimize or maximize the external forces acting on the floating structure. A two-dimensional frequency-domain boundary element method (FD-BEM) based on the linear potential theory was developed to perform the hydrodynamic analysis. A metaheuristic algorithm, the advanced particle swarm optimization, was newly coupled to the FD-BEM to perform the optimization analysis. The optimization analysis process was performed by calling FD-BEM for each generation, performing a numerical analysis of the design variables of each particle, and updating the design variables using the collected results. The results of the optimization analysis showed that the height of the submerged breakwater has a significant effect on the surface piercing body and that there is a specific area and position with an optimal value. In this study, the optimal values of the shape and position of a single submerged breakwater were determined and analyzed so that the external force acting on a surface piercing body was minimum or maximum.

Investigation of Seakeeping Performance of Trawler by the Influence of the Principal Particulars of Ships in the Bering Sea 通过白令海中船舶主要参数的影响调查拖网渔船的适航性能

: Investigating ship motion under real conditions is vital for evaluating the seakeeping performance, particularly in the design process stage. This study examined the influence of the principal particulars of a trawler on its seakeeping performance. The wave conditions in the Bering Sea are investigated using available data. The length-to-beam (L/B) and beam-to-draft (B/T) ratios of the ship are changed by 10% for the numerical simulation. The response amplitude operator (RAO) motion, root mean square (RMS) value and sensitivity analysis are calculated to evaluate the influence of the trawler dimensions on ship motions. The peak RAO motion affected the ship motions noticeably because of the resonance at the natural frequency. The L/B and B/T ratios are important geometric parameters of a ship that significantly influence its RMS motion, particularly in the case of roll and pitch. The change in the B/T ratio has a good seakeeping performance based on a comparison of the roll and pitch with the seakeeping criteria. The present results provide insights into the seakeeping performance of ships due to the influence of the principal dimensions in the design stage.

Crabbing Motion Testing of Waterjet-Powered Ships Using Stern Thrusters 使用艉轴推进器的喷水动力船舶的抓蟹运动测试

This study assessed the potential for crabbing motion in waterjet ships by exclusively employing stern thrusters. The theoretical considerations were validated through practical sea trials on the naval vessel PKG (Patrol Killer Guided missile) equipped with three stern thrusters. The control forces were calculated using the force equilibrium equation. The results showed that the hull exhibited rotations and lateral movements under wind influence. The port tail exhibited a leftward turning tendency due to the wind. This phenomenon arises from the dominance of the rotational force generated by the stern thruster over the lateral force exerted by the hull, making it challenging to maintain force equilibrium. In the sea trial, the hull rotated by 10° and moved 10.8 m laterally, with a longitudinal movement of 0.26 m. Remarkably, the lateral movement surpassed the longitudinal displacement, indicating the success of the trial. The substantial lateral travel distance provided tangible evidence that the crabbing motion of the ship is achievable using only stern thrusters. This study contributes valuable insights into enhancing the maneuverability of waterjet ships, offering practical applications for naval operations and maritime activities.

Comparison of Wave Prediction and Performance Evaluation in Korea Waters based on Machine Learning 基于机器学习的韩国水域波浪预测和性能评估比较

Waves are a complex phenomenon in marine and coastal areas, and accurate wave prediction is essential for the safety and resource management of ships at sea. In this study, three types of machine learning techniques specialized in nonlinear data processing were used to predict the waves of Korea waters. An optimized algorithm for each area is presented for performance evaluation and comparison. The optimal parameters were determined by varying the window size, and the performance was evaluated by comparing the mean absolute error (MAE). All the models showed good results when the window size was 4 or 7 d, with the gated recurrent unit (GRU) performing well in all waters. The MAE results were within 0.161 m to 0.051 m for significant wave heights and 0.491 s to 0.272 s for periods. In addition, the GRU showed higher prediction accuracy for certain data with waves greater than 3 m or 8 s, which is likely due to the number of training parameters. When conducting marine and offshore research at new locations, the results presented in this study can help ensure safety and improve work efficiency. If additional wave-related data are obtained, more accurate wave predictions will be possible.

Numerical Investigation of Motion Response of the Tanker at Varying Vertical Center of Gravities 不同垂直重心下油轮运动响应的数值研究

The vertical center of gravity (VCG) has a significant impact on the roll motion response of a surface ship, particularly oil tankers based on the oil level in the tanker after discharging oil at several stations or positional changes, such as changes in the superstructure and deck structure. This study examined the motion response of the Korea very large crude carrier 2 (KVLCC2) at various VCGs, especially roll motion when the VCG changed. The potential theory in the Ansys AQWA program was used as a numerical simulation method to calculate the motion response. On the other hand, the calculations obtained through potential theory overestimated the roll amplitudes during resonance and lacked precision. Therefore, roll damping is a necessary parameter that accounts for the viscosity effect by performing an experimental roll decay. The roll decay test estimated the roll damping coefficients for various VCGs using Froude’s method. The motion response of the ship in regular waves was evaluated for various VCGs using the estimated roll-damping coefficients. In addition, the reliability of the numerical simulation in motion response was verified with those of the experiment method reported elsewhere. The simulation results showed that the responses of the surge, sway, heave, pitch, and yaw motion were not affected by changing the VCG, but the natural frequency and magnitude of the peak value of the roll motion response varied with the VCG.

Numerical Method for Calculating Fourier Coefficients and Properties of Water Waves with Shear Current and Vorticity in Finite Depth 计算有限深度剪切流和涡度水波傅里叶系数和特性的数值方法

: Many numerical methods have been developed since 1961, but unresolved issues remain. This study developed a numerical method to address these issues and determine the coefficients and properties of rotational waves with a shear current in a finite water depth. The number of unknown constants was reduced significantly by introducing a wavelength-independent coordinate system. The reference depth was calculated independently using the shooting method. Therefore, there was no need for partial derivatives with respect to the wavelength and the reference depth, which simplified the numerical formulation. This method had less than half of the unknown constants of the other method because Newton's method only determines the coefficients. The breaking limit was calculated for verification, and the result agreed with the Miche formula. The water particle velocities were calculated, and the results were consistent with the experimental data. Dispersion relations were calculated, and the results are consistent with other numerical findings. The convergence of this method was examined. Although the required series order was reduced significantly, the total error was smaller, with a faster convergence speed.
