Digital sovereignty: an open debate and three political problems Resumen: El desarrollo tecnológico digital reciente abre un amplio abanico de nuevas posibilidades. Abstract: Recent digital technological development opens up a wide range of new possibilities. Mainly in the hands of the big technological corporations, though, it represents a threat to democratic systems. In this context, the debate on digital sovereignty has intensified. Actors from several fields call for this sovereignty from different perspectives and with various objectives. In light of this debate, I analyse three political problems to overcome in order to move towards digital sovereignty.

Until the final whistle. Abstract: In this article, I provide an overview of the work of Bernard Suits, a United States-born philosopher hardly known in Spanish-speaking philosophical circles. I analyze his views on the two central themes that occupied him during his philosophical career: the search for definitions and the question concerning the good life. However, I argue that throughout his work, from his master’s thesis defended in 1950 to his posthumously published works, Suits gave preference to the second theme. This interpretation contrasts with the reception of his work in Anglo-American academic circles, where his definitional proposal has been prioritized over his musings on the good life.

: Democratic societies are currently facing a legitimacy crisis, as evidenced by citizens’ distrust towards political institutions and parties, as well as the emergence of anti-democratic responses. To address this crisis some civil society actors and scholars have proposed alternatives based on radical egalitarian principles that can be classified as “real utopias”. To overcome the contradiction between utopia and reality, these alternatives need to extend beyond what is considered normatively desirable and must also be both technically feasible and politically viable. This paper aims to analyze sortition and mini-publics as one of those alternatives.

Abstract: So-called “post-truth” has been signalled as one major reason to explain the crisis of liberal-democracy, which is currently threatened by the emergence of populism and extremist movements. However, there is no agreement about the nature or seriousness of that particular threat. The reason is that we do not know how politics and democracy relate to truth, nor how should they relate to each other in a pluralistic framework. This paper attempts to answer these questions and offers an account of post-truth.

Abstract: The spirit and substance of democracy can perish in multiple ways, in different tempos. These variable rhythms of democide need to be identified and understood, not just because they underscore the descriptive-analytic point that there is no single way in which democracies are destroyed, or come by accident or design to sabotage themselves. Knowledge of the variable modes and rates of decline of democracy serves as an early warning detector, a way of spotting the first symptoms of democide so that pre-emptive strategies can be found to defend and enliven democracies in trouble.

: We live in the age of ecology ― the Ecocene. And if we start from the messy ecological relations that are pushing radical changes in human societies, new problems and new questions arise. This research note is concerned with how the ecological age is shifting the meaning of political representation, especially in relation to non-humans. Taking cues from ontological pluralism and specific situations it proposes that representation can no longer be uniquely thought as the practice of making present that which is absent. Instead, it becomes the creation of hybrid voices based on an ever-expanding array of beings that come to matter.
