In this paper, a novel approximation for the Gaussian Q-function in the form of Q(√x) is presented. The proposed approximation is compared with other known closed-form approximations of the Q-function in terms of accuracy and applicability. This approximation can be effciently used to simplify intractable problems which do not have explicit solutions. The approximation of the generalized probability density function (PDF) using Gaussian fnite mixture components is utilized with the proposed approximation to derive a generalized closed-form expression for the Bit Error Rate (BER) for coherent modulation techniques. The derived expression is evaluated over Nakagami-m and Weibull fading channels. Monte Carlo simulation of the average BER expression is provided over Nakagami-m and Weibull fading channels in order to validate the derived expression. The derived average SER expression can be used by engineers to evaluate the BER performance for any coherent modulation technique and over any fading channel given that the fading channel statistics are modeled using Gaussian fnite mixture.

The current trend in optical networks is to open the entire wholesale market to competition. As a result, we will see, instead of a single big market player, optical transport networks competing with each other to attract customer demand. This paper presents a wavelength broker who acts on behalf of enterprises, web host companies, financial firm etc. to buy certain number of wavelengths from such market. We present the system model, the interaction protocol and provide analysis of the competition. The simulation results of a business scenario are also recorded in the paper.

Studies have shown that patients suffering from sleep deprivation have a risk for hypertension, diabetes and depression that is higher than normal sleepers. Treatment for all these problems requires accurate analysis of the sleep stages and patterns in the polysomnographic signals collected in overnight recording over several months. However, manual sleep staging is a repetitive and time-consuming process as marking one typical eight hours overnight polysomnographic recording can take up to two hours to complete. Due to increased processing capabilities, it is now possible to automate this process and assist the sleep expert. A large number of algorithms have been proposed during the last few decades. This review article presents an overview of the existing automatic sleep staging methods, discusses the different challenges and proposes future prospects for new research opportunities.

The Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices are low-environmental impact, cost effective and long term proven solutions to transmission line difficulties. Interline Power Flow Controller (IPFC) is a novel FACTS device with an exceptional ability to control power flow among multiline transmission system unlike the other devices in which they are used to manage and compensate single transmission line. This paper attempts to reduce power deviation in a particular transmission line utilizing IPFC by adjusting angles and magnitudes of the series voltage source converters representing IPFC. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no clear study till now proposes employing IPFC to this application. A case-study is presented at the end of this investigation with the aim of simulating the ability of this device to maintain the power flow in a transmission line unchanged. Differential Evolution is employed to optimize the control parameters. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed control scheme in controlling the power flow and diminish its fluctuations.

A new feature extraction method is presented in this paper. It is modification to our previous work where we have extracted Multidimentional local features (MDLF). We name the new feature as Multi-Directional Local Feature with moving average(MDLF-Mavg). MDLF-Mavg is based on three-point linear regression and three point moving average. Linear regression is applied on horizontal (time axis) that captures phoneme onset and offset and vertical (frequency axis) which capture formant contours whereas modified moving average is applied on (45 degree) time-frequency axis and (135 degree) time-frequency axis which capture the voiceprint of speaker. The MDLF-Mavg performance is compared to other speech features in a speaker recognition system. MDLF-Mavg has shown better performance than the other features. In the case of the female only part of the database it achieved 100% recognition rate. We will show that MDLF-Mavg produce what can be looked at as a voice print for each speaker when vocalizing a certain text.

Recently, Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motors (PMSM) is one of the most attractive electric machine in industrial applications, therefor must be protected against electrical and mechanical failures for continue their operation safely. However, different kinds of faults are unavoidable in motors during their operational service. Unbalancing in the supply voltage is common in grid supply. However, the unbalance supply and phase loss produces similar symptoms. Therefore, this paper focuses on unbalanced supply condition diagnosis and discrimination between unbalancing in supply and single phasing or phase loss fault based. The proposed technique utilizes the ratio of third harmonic to fundamental of stator line currents and supply voltages using artificial neural network (ANN). The presented approach gives high degree of accuracy in detection and diagnosis of phase loss fault and those due to supply voltages unbalance using artificial neural network. All simulations in this paper are conducted using finite element analysis software. The approach is proven effectively through experimental validation.

Nowadays, many organizations find it economically attractive to host their services in a cloud environment. Still, security remains the number one concern for many organizations in adopting the cloud services. In this paper, we assess and study the security of a typical cloud environment as that of the popular Amazon AWS Cloud. The cloud security is assessed by deploying and running Dionaea honeypots for a few months in the cloud provide networks. Collected data and logs from Dionaea honeypots show that the cloud environment is surprisingly insecure and is in fact a target of malicious activities and attacks from different countries.

A successful story on teaching innovation and creativity in engineering design instruction is presented in this paper. The approach emphasizes the role of student engagement built around team spirit and industry support to students. This paper presents findings on student engagement, engagement styles and practical implementation of instructional methods to enhance student engagement in engineering design. This approach targets student-centered learning where the students assume the responsibility for their own learning. A team teaching and learning approach was adopted with great emphasis on industrial involvement and student role play for a better preparation for future professional life. This approach has allowed students to reinforce and apply subject knowledge, whilst developing key skills such as teamwork and communication. The project-based approach has been successful at improving students' engagement and sense of responsibility within a more active learning environment. It has also boosted a majority of students' confidence in themselves, making a significant shift from the purely academic achievement to near professional life achievement.

Easy Path Wavelet Transform (EPWT), a wavelet based compression technique that averages in adaptive neighborhoods of image intensity points, is utilized for the sparse representation of two-dimensional data. EPWT, when applied upon images, operates along the permutations of original image indices exploiting the local correlations in an uncomplicated manner. The highly correlated array of function values when passed through one-dimensional wavelet filters produce wavelet coefficients of minimum magnitude. Consequently high compression ratio is achieved after the application of a wavelet shrinkage procedure on the reconstructed images. Thus the image can be represented in terms of its wavelet decomposition coefficients and the respective path vectors obtained at all levels.

This paper presents an initial study related to the use of robotic toys as teaching and therapeutic aid tools for teachers and care-givers as well as parents of children with various levels of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Some of the most common features related to the behavior of a child with ASD are his/her social isolation, living in their own world, not being physically active, and not willing to learn new things. While the teachers, parents, and all other related care-givers do their best to improve the condition of these kids, it is usually quite an uphill task. However, one remarkable observation that has been reported by several teachers dealing with ASD children is the fact that the same children do get attracted to toys with lights and sounds. Hence, this project targets the development/modifications of such existing toys into appropriate behavior training tools which the care-givers can use as they would desire. Initially, the remote control is in hand of the trainer, but after some time, the child is entrusted with the control of the robotic toy to test for the level of interest. It has been found during the course of this study that children with quite low learning activity got extremely interested in the robot and even advanced to controlling the robot with the PS2 type joystick. It has been observed that the children did show some hesitation in the beginning 5 minutes of the very first sessions of such interaction but were very comfortable afterwards which has been considered as a very strong indicator of the potential of this technique in teaching and rehabilitation of children with ASD or similar brain disorders.
