The performance of a double-intensity near-field phase retrieval algorithm is investigated. In addition to previously noted advantages of phase retrieval, it is shown from computer simulation that the accuracy of far-field prediction of a reflector antenna by the algorithm may be better than the conventional near-field measurement when the probe is scanned on a non-perfect planar surface. The concept of 'phase encoding power' is introduced from which the scan distances for the algorithm to converge satisfactorily are derived by simulation. Near-field phase retrieval is validated by measurement of an offset reflector at 32GHz. The result illustrates the practicability and capability for application in the mm and sub-mm wave ranges.

The coherent microwave pulses oscillation by a mode-locked magnetostatic backward voilume wave delay line oscillator have beern realized and investigated. The spectrum of of Oscillation frequencies and envelope of coherent microvave pulses have been calculated. It was show that nonlinearity of magnetostatic wave dispersion have limited the number of the modes synchronized and resulted in the nonsymmetry of pulses envelope.

The modified Wiener-Hopf technique is applied to the solution of the problem of the guided modes along an open microstrip. The same technique is also used for the problem of exciting the open microstrip by a slit delta function series voltage generator. The technique leads to approximate analytical expressions for the space wave and the surface wave radiation fields(which are continuous spectra) together with the guided modes (which are discrete)... These are needed in microstrip discontinuity and antenna problems. Two independent Wiener-Hopf equations result, one for the LSE modes, and the other for the LSM modes. The two integral equations are converted to algebraic equations by introducing certain approximations related to the case when the strip is not very narrow. Propagation constants for the guided modes, current distribution and impedance are compared with other published results. Significance to the radiation from open-ended microstrip is presented.

Solid-state devices that produce power in the microwave and millimeter-wave region of the spectrum have relatively low power outputs compared to their vacuum tube counterparts. To overcome this limitation, a large variety of power combining schemes have been developed. One of the most promising techniques involves quasi-optical arrays that permit power combining to be done in free space. This approach has a number of advantages over the traditional methods which involve waveguides or hybrids : the losses associated with waveguides and feed networks are eliminated, the power can be distributed over a large number of devices, and an external injection-locking signal is unnecessary. In this paper, we present a quasi-optical power combiner based on integrating MESFETs into a planar grid. An equivalent circuit model for the grid is discussed and used to design a grid oscillator operating at X-band.

A new method for the validity analysis of nonlinear transistor models is presented based on DC-and small-signal S-parameter measurements and realistic consideration of the measurement and de-embedding errors and singularities of the small-signal equivalent circuit. As an example, some analysis results for an extended Gummel Poon model are presented in the case of a UHF bipolar power transistor.

The self-consistent problem on interaction of charge carriers within the semiconductor with the field of slow-wave structures located in resonators has been solved. The physical processes have been studied and the optimal interaction conditions in the semiconducting analoques of klystron with distributed interaction and orotron have been determined. It is shown, that application of Smith-Purcell radiation for establishment of feedback opens new possibilities for construction of effective microvave devices of this type.

A novel MMIC active antenna structure has been demonstrated by closely integrating a HEMT device and a slot antenna on opposite sides of a GaAs substrate. To our knowledge, this is the first time that such components have been integrated on the same MMIC. It is also the first time that circuit components have used both sides of an MMIC with via holes providing the through substrate connections. This active transmit antenna was developed for 30 GHz operation.

This work deals with a novel and efficient method for determining self and mutual impedances of a system of electric or magnetic dipoles in proximity of a slot on a ground plane, backed by a rectangular waveguide. The method, which is based on recent results on the radiation modes of open waveguides of non-separable cross-section, can easily accomodate a multiplicity of sources and receivers of finite dimensions.

We present a general method to get distributions with minimal edge brightening (minimizing the mutual coupling problem ) in sum pattern synthesis. The method obtains patterns, in which the infinitely deep nulls are replaced by less deep nulls. This provides a multiplicity of solutions, one of which may be easier to achieve physically than the original solution. The solutions corresponding to linear and planar array synthesis show an important improvement in the distributions, without much loss im directivity for the resulting pattern.
