Any inquiry into the condition of the churches to-day must consider the gulf existing between the church and the working class. We hardly realize, I think, that by a great section of the proletariat our religious organizations are regraded as the stronghold of hypocrisy and oppression. We hardly realize the bitterness that that these workers fell toward us as they repeat once again: “Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows’ houses, and for a pretence make long prayers. Therefore, shall ye receive the greater damnation.”

The application of sociological knowledge, including theory, methods, and skills, has been identified as sociological practice.  Within the field of sociological practice there are two distinct types of practice - clinical and applied (Clark and Fritz 1986).  In the United States (U.S.) the Association for Applied and Clinical Sociology (AACS) certifies these sociological practitioners at the master’s or doctoral level. The process involves an evaluation by previously certified peers and includes the submission of a portfolio and the completion of a demonstration in which applicants showcase their action-oriented work. Certification is not state licensure. The credentialing of sociological practitioners in the U.S. and internationally can serve as a model for sociological practitioners globally - applied, clinical, and engaged public.

Alice Stokes Paul was born in the United States (USA) on January 11, 1885 at Paulsdale in Mount Laurel, New Jersey. She received a Ph.D. in sociology and devoted her life to achieving rights for women. While her academic work was completed before the term “clinical sociology” was used in the United States, her work certainly should be seen as part of the history of clinical sociology.

London, Dec. 9- Miss Alice Paul, of Philadelphia, the suffragette who was arrested Nov. 9th and sentenced to a month’s hard labor for her share in the suffragette demonstration at the Lord Mayor’s banquet at the Guildhall, was released from Holloway Jail this morning on the completion of her thirty days. She left the prison in a cab, accompanied by two wardresses, and went to the home of friends. A doctor was immediately called to attend her there, owing to her weakened condition.

Elementos para el Análisis de la Institucionalización de la Sociología Aplicada. Un caso de Sociología Clínica en Colombia (2015-2022) 应用社会学制度化分析的要素。哥伦比亚临床社会学案例(2015-2022年)

El proceso de institucionalización de una disciplina puede estudiarse a partir de un conjunto de casos representativos en los que, si bien no nos podemos basar para dar cuenta de toda su complejidad, sí nos permiten identificar los elementos involucrados en ese proceso y las problemáticas que se enfrentan. Este trabajo se dedica, en su primera parte, a la presentación del debate alrededor de dos visiones de la sociología que conviven y caracterizan su institucionalización. Se explora, en primer lugar, la discusión clásica entorno a la dicotomía “teoría y técnica”, “teórico y aplicado”, “ciencia y profesión”, “investigación básica e investigación aplicada”, para abordar luego la pertinencia de la sociología aplicada. Por último, se expone el caso particular del primer intento de institucionalización de la sociología clínica en Colombia a partir de su inclusión en el plan de estudios de la carrera1 de sociología de la Universidad del Atlántico, conjuntamente con el desarrollo de actividades de investigación y proyección social; prácticas, pasantías y trabajos de grado; diplomados, seminarios internacionales, publicaciones y, finalmente, la creación de una asociación profesional. 1 Se utilizan como sinóminos “programa”, “carrera” y “pregrado”.

Entre raison et passion : l’expérience des pédagogues lors de la formation et de l’application du projet PhiloJeunes 在理性与激情之间:教师在PhiloJeunes项目的形成和应用中的经验

En prenant appui sur la mission de l’école québécoise qui consiste à instruire, socialiser et qualifier, le projet PhiloJeunes, implanté au Québec depuis 2015, œuvre au renforcement des facteurs de protection face à la radicalisation violente par la voie de l’implantation d’une pratique philosophique en classe. Le présent article se fonde sur une étude qualitative menée auprès de pédagogues engagés dans ce projet éducatif, afin d’explorer leur expérience lors de la formation et de l’application dudit projet. L’analyse met en lumière les défis et les leviers rencontrés par les pédagogues, notamment en regard d’une certaine prescription/proscription normative quant à l’expression et à la circulation des émotions. L’inévitable imbrication entre la sphère rationnelle et la sphère émotionnelle amène les autrices à soutenir, dans la veine de l’héritage de John Dewey, un dépassement de cette désuète opposition, afin d’embrasser une éducation démocratique sensible qui puisse favoriser la réalisation des objectifs de prévention de la radicalisation violente par la voie de la discussion philosophique en contexte scolaire.

A Clinical Sociologist’s Journey as Children’s Rights Advocate 临床社会学家作为儿童权利倡导者的历程

Career decisions are not randomly made; they are the result of personal experiences that drive our motivations and interests. Many of these occur when we are children, which is defined by the United Nations as any time before age 18. This article considers the importance of the social construction of children’s lives and the importance of autobiographical memory in understanding our professional choices. It chronicles some of the journey and insights behind one scholar’s drive to promote the issue of children’s human rights and its relationship to clinical sociological policy and practice. The use of a clinical sociological approach could reduce harm and improve benefits to children, families, and society.

La sociologie clinique propose une démarche en rupture avec les paradigmes issus des sciences de l’ingénieur et de la gestion. L’approche clinique est critique face aux approches normatives, quantitatives, prescriptives dominées par la rationalité instrumentale et la marchandisation des relations humaines. Elle s’intéresse au singulier, à la subjectivité, au vécu, au sensible, avec un souci éthique. Elle a pour objectif d’associer les acteurs concernés à la compréhension des problèmes, de les impliquer comme sujets dans l’élaboration des réponses qu’ils apportent individuellement et collectivement aux contradictions qui les traversent. Elle ne cherche pas à modéliser le réel mais à s’immerger dans le vécu, au plus près des situations concrètes, de la réalité du travail, de l’appréhension subjective des problèmes rencontrés. Elle s’inscrit dans un système social complexe. Le changement ne se prescrit pas, il se construit dans un processus qui implique, activement ou passivement, l’ensemble des personnes concernées.

Activist Scholar-Practitioners in the United States and South Africa 美国和南非的活跃学者实践者

This article discusses the lives and impact of leading activists whose work is highlighted in the histories of clinical sociology in the United States and South Africa. The four scholar-practitioners from the United States discussed here are Jane Addams, W.E.B. Du Bois, Charles Gomillion and James Laue. The South African clinical sociologists whose lives are profiled are Harold Wolpe and H.W. van der Merwe. Based on the career experiences of these six individuals, concluding comments are made about five topics in relation to activism: employment, sufficient time for effective activism, handling criticism, reasons for becoming strong activists, and factors that may discourage activism.

Les rapports d’interculturalité dans le cadre du travail social sont des thématiques intégrées dans les apprentissages en travail social. Abordée en recherche ou en intervention, l’interculturalité nécessite de se questionner sur sa posture et sur le cadre de la rencontre avec l’autre. Cet article vise à montrer comment l’approche socio-clinique et la pratique anti-oppressive permettent de créer un espace d’interpellation bienveillant pour une recherche en contexte d’interculturalité, traitant spécifiquement des problématiques de racisme. Il s’agira ici non pas de montrer l’analyse des données d’une recherche, mais de les utilisées pour donner à voir dans quel espace les récits des participant.e.s à la recherche se sont donnés à entendre.
