Abstract Aim. To assess the prevalence of couvade syndrome and analyze the factors determining the occurrence of this syndrome in the partners of pregnant women. Material and method. The research material was collected by a diagnostic survey, using an author’s survey questionnaire. Results. Couvade Syndrome occurs in 94.3% of partners of women with complicated pregnancies. Among the most common somatic symptoms there are: back pain (56.2%), headaches (53.3%), appetite changes (48.6%), indigestion (34.3%) and abdominal pain of unknown origin (31.4%), while mental ones include: sleep disturbances (37.1%), irritability (34.3%), tension (32.4%), regardless of the course of partner’s pregnancy. Men, who were married, were more likely to have Couvade symptoms than those in an informal relationship, regardless of the course of partner’s pregnancy (p=0.02). Respondents without Couvade Syndrome were more likely to have low levels of involvement in their partner’s current pregnancy than those with symptoms, regardless of the course of this pregnancy (p=0.03). Men with symptoms of the syndrome were more likely to be less involved in their responsibilities at work than those without symptoms, regardless of the course of partner’s pregnancy (p=0.0006). Conclusions. The majority (94.3%) of partners of women with complicated pregnancies have a Couvade Syndrome. The most common somatic symptoms include back pain, headaches, appetite changes, indigestion and abdominal pain of unknown origin, while the mental ones: sleep disturbances, irritability, tension, anxiety and nervousness. Married men are more likely to have Couvade Syndrome than those in an informal relationship. Low levels of involvement in the current pregnancy are shown by men who do not have the syndrome. Men, who have the Couvade Syndrome, are less involved in their work responsibilities.

Abstract Aim. To determine the eff ects of interventional follow-up phone calls on the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in adult patients with heart failure (HF). Material and methods. This quasi-experimental with a one-group pretest-posttest design was conducted on 30 patients with HF receiving interventional follow-up phone calls by a cardiology nurse from an internationally recognized healthcare organization in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected by sociodemographic and clinical surveys and Minnesota Living with Heart Failure Questionnaire. A paired sample t-student test was conducted to measure the eff ectiveness of the follow-up calls on the HRQOL pretest and posttest. Results. A statistically significant difference was found between the pre-intervention and post-intervention mean scores of the total HRQOL scale and all the subscales: physical, emotional/psychological, and socio-economic (p<0.001). The diff erence between the mean pretest-posttest scores was 31.08 (SD=11.09), which was statistically significant at t(29)=14.29 (p<0.001). The participants’ overall HRQOL increased significantly after the intervention (Mean=39.04, SD=1.66). Conclusions. Interventional follow-up phone calls were found to be eff ective in improving the HRQOL of patients with HF. However, a larger study – a multi-center one, is needed to confirm the findings of this study. By providing empirical evidence, this research may motivate cardiology nurses to pursue such programs in this population.

Abstract Introduction. Improving the quality of provided services and increasing patient satisfaction in medical facilities is an undoubted challenge for health care institutions in Poland. A high level of nursing care increases the efficiency of the treatment process, reduces the costs of health care units and affects the patient’s sense of satisfaction and contentment. Aim. The aim of this paper was to assess the level of satisfaction with nursing care using the Newcastle scale. Material and methods. The study included 117 patients hospitalized in the cardiac rehabilitation unit. The research tool used in the study was the standardized Newcastle questionnaire to assess patients’ overall satisfaction and experiences with nursing care at the unit level. Results. The respondents’ experience of nursing care was rated at a medium level, while their level of satisfaction with nursing care was rated at a high level. The above rating was influenced by the age and educational level of the patients. Conclusions. Patients of cardiac rehabilitation units rate the experience of nursing care well, while their level of satisfaction with this care is high.

Abstract Aim. The purpose of the study is to identify the connection between high blood pressure and PWV in patients with AH and determine if AH is a risk factor that accelerates the development of atherosclerosis. Material and methods. With quantitative research method we investigated, explained, and defi ned the eff ects of arterial hypertension with the PWV increase‐rate observed across diff erent age groups of patients who already have AH. Data from patients’ medical records from the At Cor Sphygmocor operating system were extracted. Results. The sample included 191 patients with AH. PWV values were normal in 72% of patients with optimal blood pressure (BP), 60% of patients with normal BP had increased PWV in high normal BP and grade 1 AH were 53% of increased PWV, 53% of normal PWV in grade 2 AH, increased in 94% in grade 3 AH, and 50% of patients had increased PWV values in isolated systolic AH. Conclusions. The research results undoubtedly show the importance of arterial hypertension for the increase in pulse wave velocity, with the clearest correlation at grade 3 AH and in the age groups between 30 and 49 years. On average, the PWV value in hypertensive patients rose by 8%, which represents an increased risk of cardiovascular complications.

Abstract Aim. This article is an attempt to describe the case and nursing problems of a sixteen-year-old female patient of Tytus Chałubiński Hospital in Zakopane who was admitted to the paediatric ward on 22nd of August 2019 after being struck by lightning during a hike to Giewont. Material and methods. The author has also made an attempt to determine problems during the patient’s hospitalization after the accident on the basis of Evidence Base Nursing – a nursing practice based on scientific research. Results. The phenomenon of a lightning strike leads to numerous negative health effects in the victim. These include direct consequences, such as vital functions abnormalities, injuries to multiple organs, burns, and late complications, such as persistent neurological disorders, consequences of injuries to multiple organs and mental and emotional disorders resulting from direct threat to one’s life and participation in a traumatic event. This paper attempts to describe an event of a teenager being struck by lightning and its medical consequences. Conclusions. 1. It seems expedient to develop and make available, e.g. in the form of computer programmes, standards for nursing patients after lightning strikes, which would take into account mass accidents. 2. It is necessary to develop and promote a model for hospital organisation of psychological assistance to patients (including adolescents) involved in a mass accident. It should also take into consideration later consequences of traumatic events.

Abstract Introduction. Access to Internet resources has resulted in changes in the perception of principles related to interpersonal communication, privacy and sharing of personal information. Medical personnel may use data obtained from the Internet to supplement information gathered during the patient interview or to reveal a different picture of the patient’s health status. In PTG, it is crucial to assess the motivation for such an action, respect the patient’s rights and obtain his consent, comply with the rules of medical ethics, as well as assess the usefulness of such an action for the therapeutic process. There are questions as to whether the information provided is true, and to what extent it is altered by cognitive or mood disorders. Aim. The aim is to present selected issues related to the search for information about patients on the Internet by the therapeutic team. Method. Analysis of research and scientific studies in the Medline and PubMed databases. Summary. Scientific studies confirming the occurrence of PTG phenomenon, refer to the issue of ethical principles, obtaining patient’s consent, reliability of recorded data and true identity of patients, inclusion of obtained information in their medical records and its importance in shaping the relationship between the patient and the therapeutic team.

Abstract Introduction. Ensuring comfort in patients in palliative home care is a difficult task. Care, in which patient’s comfort is fundamental, was fi rst introduced by Katharine Kolcaba. Aim. Assessing comfort levels of patients in palliative home care, including selected determinants of this condition. Material and methods. The study included 55 palliative care patients in home settings, receiving services provided by the home palliative care team and a group of 63 informal caregivers providing home care. A pilot study, by diagnostic survey, using a survey questionnaire with the PAPI technique was conducted among patients in palliative care treated in home-based settings in the fi rst half of 2022. Results. There was a statistically signifi cant relationship between satisfaction with care, and the level of comfort provided (p<0.05). Those who strongly indicated satisfaction were characterized by signifi cantly higher levels of comfort provided (M=35.43; SD=5.32 vs. M=33.38; SD=4.63), compared to other patients. Conclusions. There is a correlation between the level of comfort perceived by patients, and methods of providing comfort to patients in home settings used by informal caregivers. Individuals, who are characterized by a higher feeling of comfort provision, at the same time achieve higher degree of comfort provided by the caregiver.

Abstract Introduction. Midline catheters (MCs) are an option for vascular access alongside the commonly used short peripheral intravenous catheters, centrally and peripherally inserted central catheters. Aim. The aim of this study was to evaluate the solution implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic in a centre where MC access had not been used before. Material and method. It was an observational retrospective evaluation of the 98 medical registries of adult patients. Results. The mean time from hospital admission to midline catheter insertion was 15 days. The most common indications for the catheter implementation were: difficult intravenous access (83%) and expected time hospital stay >6 days (17%). The mean dwell time of the catheters was 9 days. The most common reasons for removal were: the end of intravenous therapy (44%) and catheter blockages (36%). Conclusions. A high level of prematurely removed catheters was observed, despite the existence of a hospital protocol. The high percentage of MCs removed before the end of intravenous therapy may be indicative of the poor quality of care and the need for continuous education of medical staff. The results obtained should be confi rmed in a prospective study planned on their basis in order to identify interventions which are necessary to improve the quality of vascular access care.

Abstract Introduction. Disabled women are often overlooked when it comes to procreation plans and encounter social misunderstanding and lack of support. In addition, their sexual needs are often marginalized. It means that education and professional care of midwives and doctors are necessary to put flesh on problem. Aim. The aim of the work is to present knowledge and familiarize with the subject of perinatal care for a woman with a disability based on an individual case study. Method. For the purposes of this study, the qualitative research method “study case” was used, containing a description of the patient’s obstetric and clinical condition, aimed at its in-depth analysis and assessment. The patient’s informed consent to participate in the study was obtained. C-Hobic care outcome indicators were also used to describe the case. ICNP® reference terminology was used to develop care plans. Summary. Taking care of a patient with cerebral palsy, the midwife undertakes numerous interventions in the field of education of both the woman and the whole family. The overriding goal is to increase the woman’s independence, increase her confidence that she will be able to take care of a newborn and improve her competence in self-care. Due to the constant progress in maternal-fetal medicine, further research is needed on preconception and perinatal care for patients with CP.

Abstract Introduction. Midwives and nurses experience ethical dilemmas during providing patient care. The manner of coping with them plays an important role in shaping the nature of care. Aim. The aim was to analyse the scientific literature on moral sensitivity characterising midwives, nurses and to answer the question of which determinants influence it. Method. A critical review of the literature was performed, using a combination of key words: moral sensitivity, nurses, midwives, work, hospital. Articles were identified using three databases (PubMed, CINAHAL Complete, SCOPUS). The results were narrowed to original articles in English published between 2011 and 2021. The analysis covered 15 articles. Summary. The moral sensitivity of midwives and nurses exhibits a correlation with sociodemographic variables such as age, education, job seniority, and the hospital’s ethical climate and decision-making which is consistent with the principles of professional ethics. An important task of the academic, managerial staff of hospitals is to shape nurses’ and midwives’ moral sensitivity during their education.
