Demographic studies and statistics from state and federal courts indicate agrowing need for Spanish-English court interpreters with special training in consecutiveand simultaneous court interpretation. The authors conducted a survey of 466 ofCalifornia's Spanish-English court interpreters to determine what the Spanish-Englishcourt interpreter's strongest skills needs are. Survey results are reported in this article, and the five strongest skills training needs are identified. The authors indicate how thelanguage laboratory may efficiently be used to develop and enhance these five skillsand how it may best serve a court interpreter training program. Emphasis is onapplying the work of G.A. Miller and the training techniques of Robert Ingram toSpanish-English court interpreter training.

Sound discrimination often becomes a frustrating stumblingblock for adult language students unable to hear the differencesbetween two contrasting sounds. The use of a modifiedoscilloscope, in this case the Visipitch, enables students to seethe differences in pronunciation patterns they may be unable tohear. With the aid of immediate feedback, students are able tomonitor and mosify the activity of their speech organs andcompare their productions of specific sounds to those producedby the instructor. This instrument is useful in teachingintonation and rhythm patterns as well as most phonemes andallophones.

In the summer of 1981, the author was engaged in pedagogicalresearch in language program development for the governments of Senegaland The Gambia. During that period, he further participated in an eight countrylanguage teaching survey throughout West, Central, and EastAfrica, under the sponsorship of the United States International CommunicationsAgency. Included in that survey was an analysis of the useof radio broadcasts as a means to teach foreign languages. This articlewill describe the language-by-radio programs in four countries, i.e.,Senegal, Burundi, Rwanda, and Kenya. Of special interest is the use ofradio to teach English.

A computer-based, four part instructional support program wasdeveloped for elementary and secondary students at MissionConsolidated Independent School District in Mission, Texas.Of particular importance because of its far-reaching implicationsin the field of elementary education is the CMI component whichrepresents a quantum leap toward recognition of the technicalsophistication of today's elementary school students. The student-controlled, electronic learning laboratory atMission, used to augment the Learning Lab Listening, Speaking, andReading Skills Program is believed to be the first such laboratory usedat the elementary level in the United States.

This article reports on research into the use of laser videodiscs for instruction inthe Federal Republic of Germany (FRG). It describes the criteria for the selection ofclassroom media and explains four configurations of the videodisc. It also reports onthe reactions of classroom teachers to the videodisc.
