In the last years cyber security become a relevant issue for the maritime industry. The in-creasing digitalization in maritime sector, put the vessels in remote communications from headquarter company with information technology systems, and most of operational technology (OT) equipment on board ship have online communications data with on shore for monitoring the main ship functions. Failure the vessel operational technology (OT) equipment on board ship, like ECDIS map for navigation, steering systems and main engine controls, has serious consequences. In this article we discussed the vulnerability of different OT equipment on board ship, and we highlight how the hacker can inject some malware that affect the hull stress monitoring systems (HSMS) or can easy manipulate EDI messaging text of the load plan (there is still a significant lack of security in the vali-dation of message integrity) that finally lead to affect the ship stability.

Starting with the initial design phase, the knowledge of the ship manoeuvring performance is an important problem. One of the methods to evaluate the manoeuvring characteristics is based on the time domain simulation of the standard manoeuvring tests. A typical mathematical model that may be used to determine the manoeuvring characteristics of the ships is presented in this paper.

While welding started to be used on large scale in engineering, distortion has become a stringent problem for industry, mostly for shipyards. This paper aims to bring together the result of large amount of research on distortion and mitigation techniques, in order to support further practical research on topic. Phenomena was explained in detail, such as mostly used treatments for reducing distortion. In addition to this, inherent strain theory was presented for offering a starting point to those which shall perform thermal analysis in welded structures.

To control CO 2 emissions from ships, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has introduced a mandatory technical measure for new ships: the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). The paper presents a preliminary evaluation of the propulsive performances for a 30000 tdw oil tanker, considering EEDI regulations. Ship resistance and propulsive power have been computed and several main diesel engines have been selected. For every study case, an optimal efficiency propeller has been designed and the Energy Efficiency Design Index has been calculated.

This paper outlines the concept design developed by International Contract Engineering (ICE) for an all-electric double ended ferry designed for a medium range crossing (about 8 nautical miles). The international market of hybrid and all-electric ferries is highlighted with related advantages and barriers, and some statistics, in the context of the new environmental international rules (summarised in the paper).

As in many industrial domains, applications of composite materials show a constant growth in the marine industry. The possibility to create a specific combination of materials and engineering them to work together better that any of them independently creates a wide range of applications that challenge the naval architects of today. The paper pre-sents a brief review of the development of this class of materials and their advantages for the shipbuilding and boatbuilding industry.

This paper demonstrates the implementation of an integrated workflow for the finite element based structural assessment/optimization of a 3D midship segment of RoPax vessel within contract design phase. Commercial software such as AVEVA Marine ® , ANSYS ® and modeFRONTIER ® and newly developed in-house tools/modules have been integrated under an automated iterative routine. The structural optimisation carried out with an aim to reduce the structural weight of the ship with least value for vertical centre of gravity. Constraints implemented in the optimization include relevant BV rules and shipyard re-quirements.The work is performed within the framework of European Union’s HOLISHIP (2016-2020) project.

The primary challenge in the South-Eastern European ports and former industrial areas is to improve their competitiveness to the level of the environment protection. Most shipping emissions in ports are estimated to grow fourfold up to 2050. In order to reduce these projected emissions, strong policies responses will be needed. The main output of this paper will be legislative recommendations on transnational and national level on how to improve the freight transportation system around industrial hubs within the urban context.

This study presents the influence of the distance between the floats of catamaran for ship calm water resistance. As we know, a catamaran is composed by 2 floats, each floats has the own wave systems in calm water. The distance between these floats influence the phenomena that appears due to composition of the wave systems. The low value of the calm water resistance force is provided by the optimum distance of the floats. In this study, will used 3 different distances of the floats for the main speed of the ship. To estimate the ship resistance will be used RANS equations which provide a good fluid flow in turbulent models.

The operation capabilities of a maritime ship have to be assessed during the design, including the seakeeping criteria. In this study a 100000 tdw tanker is considered, with two loading conditions, cargo and ballast. The numerical analyses are developed with our own software DYN, module OSC, based on a linear hydrodynamic strip theory. The main oscillation components, heave, pitch and roll, are considered. The analysis includes an extended parametric study for the tanker speed up to 15 knots, different vertical positions of the gravity centre, a heading angle full range and irregular waves significant height up to 12m. Also the seakeeping limits have two sets of criteria. The results are pointing out the operation limits of the tanker on combined navigation parameters in irregular waves, by motions and acceleration short term seakeeping criteria.
