The course-keeping is an important ship’s quality. Starting with the initial ship design process, the knowledge of the stability on route represents a main component of the manoeuvring performance. Also, the turning circle characteristics must be estimated in order to analyse the manoeuvring performance. Preliminary theoretical methods may be used to study the course-keeping quality and turning circle characteristics. For that purpose, the numerical solution of the Nomoto equation based on the Runge-Kutta method can be applied in order to compute the turning rate of the ship and to analyse the spiral manoeuvre. A new computer code, in Java language, was developed in the Research Centre of the Naval Architecture Faculty from “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati in order to analyse the ship’s stability on route. Also, the turning circle characteristics are estimated on the basis of statistical relations. Practical evaluations based on the computer code were presented in this paper. The conclusions reveal the possibility to use the new computer code for the course-keeping and turning circle analyse in the preliminary design stage.

The X-bow concept was developed by Ulstein company, in order to increase the ship hydrodynamic performance. Low resistance, reduced fuel consumption, smoother motion and low acceleration levels are some of the hydrodynamics improvements. A theoretical analysis on the seakeeping performance of a supply vessel with X-bow form was performed by using Aveva Marine Engineering Software and it is presented in this paper. The ship motions and accelerations on irregular waves were calculated and the influence of the roll gyradius and bilge keel was analysed. The conclusion reveals the important influence of the mentioned elements on the ship motions and accelerations.

The side launching method has become a solution of transporting ship into water in restricted water/canal. Unfortunately, this method brings higher possibility of capsizing mainly occurring when the ship interacts with the water surface. Shipyards need detailed calculations and procedures to predict the outcome of ship in water, yet they are not able to perform due to its complexity of computation and its being time-consuming. Thus, this thesis proposes the automatic procedure of the side ship launching. Using the gravitational side launching theory, a code has been developed to solve the 3D launching case. Computation of ship motions, velocity and acceleration are conducted to predict the actual ship simulation. To simplify things, three phases of analysis are introduced corresponds to the kinematics behaviour of the object when interacts with water. From this study, the result shows a good agreement in comparison to shipyard calculation results with less than 5% differences. However, to be applied in shipyard, this simulation should be done further for the dynamic motion to capture all aspects.

The estimation of the small ships manoeuvring performance in the planning domain represents an important aspect related to the initial design stage. The turning circle characteristics can be determined by using the method proposed by Mordvinov. Based on this method, a computer code was performed in the Research Centre of the Naval Architecture Faculty from “Dunarea de Jos” University of Galati. Practical result obtained on a planning small ship with outboard engines is presented in this paper. The computer code was integrated in the PHP software platform, dedicated to the estimation of the ships hydrodynamics performances, in the case of didactical applications or research activities.

The topic approached in this paper regards the impact between a container dropped from the manoeuvering systems and main deck of a PSV, without considering the wood material. This study was done to verify the structural resistance of the deck in the most difficult conditions of loading and unloading containers. The dropping test of the container is pretty difficult because it involves a detailed analysis of the stresses that occur in the deck’s structure, as well as in the container’s structure.

The article, after a short historic setting and an attempt to definitions and classifications, will be articulated around three chapters following the chronology of the realization (studies, manufacturing, installation) of the metallic offshore platforms and will end on a fast review of the solutions of the future. The demand for energy continues to rise asking for inexpensive energy solutions. A large mettalic structure used to house workforce and machinery (offshore platform) extract, process and ship or pipe the oil and natural gas to the hore, can be fixed to the ocean bottom, depending on the circumstances, or could be an island or can float.

The objective of this study is to evaluate the influence of the different characteristics of some types of engines on the propulsion performances from the economic point of view and the impact on the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) and the Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator (EEOI). The analysis was carried out for different solutions of motorization. The preliminary design of the propeller was performed taking into account two values of the diameter according to design procedures. For each diameter two engines were selected in order to have a comparative analysis. It is well known that IMO has adopted strict regulations related to the emission of air pollutants from ships and mandatory energy-efficiency measures to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases under Annex VI of IMO’s pollution prevention treaty (MARPOL). IMO has established a series of baselines regarding the amount of fuel to be burned by each type of ship for a certain cargo capacity [1]. Ships to be built in the near future have to comply with the provisions set up by baselines which will be progressively higher over time.

Taking into account the latest requirements for reducing the pollution that results from the combustion of fossil fuels, there was a need to reduce the power of ships propulsion engines. In this context, the requirement are also available for sport boats. So in order to reduce the power of the propulsion engine, solutions are sought to reduce the total resistance of the ship. This is done by reducing the wetted surface of the hull. In this paper are presented two concepts of sport boats, as well as the comparison between them, whose body is designed to be made of aluminum. In order to optimize the shapes using CFD methods, it was studied the flow around the ship’s hull in various constructive ways.
