The present paper offers a preliminary assessment of tourism in Tuscany following the dramatic crisis brought about by Covid19 pandemic. Starting with an outline of the most recent trends in this economic sector, the study draws the attention to the newly arisen forms of tourism in Tuscany with special focus on rural tourism and its impressive development at a regional scale in the last years. Our conclusion is that the case of rural tourism can positively represent a top trend leading Tuscany economy out of the recent pandemic.

Since it is not beneficial to everyone, the sustainability transition is a complex process and many mechanisms hinder its evolution. Some agents involved in this transition shoulder significant costs and burdens: even if some agents can shoulder part of them, it is unlikely that all agents will spontaneously comply with the responsibi-lity that the sustainability transition imposes on them. This paper intends to investigate how, in the context of the sustainability transition, the relevant agents must/can comply with the duties demanded by this responsibility (which can be defined as “first order” responsibility). Indeed, some agents do not comply with their own (first order) responsibility and with the consequent obligations. To induce such (first order) agents to act in accordance with their (first order) responsibility, the notion of “second order” responsibility – that is, the responsibility that other agents ensure that the first order agents act on the basis of their (first order) responsibility – should be employed. In this normative perspective, the work proposes a theoretical-analytical framework within which second order agents – which in a pragmatic perspective can be defined as “agents of destabilization” (divided into primary and operational) – take action to win the resistance of first order agents in order to favor the sustainability transition.

The study of geographic determinants in the processes of spreading infectious diseases has a long tradition. As a result of the increase in the incidence of chronic and non-infectious diseases, such as cancer and various types of heart disease, especially in the more advanced countries, the typical methods of spatial analysis have also been applied to these types of diseases. In fact, their heterogeneous aetiology often includes environmental risk factors that need to be investigated using geographic techniques. The object of this study is the possible influence of an environmental risk factor on the onset of thyroid cancer (TC): volcanic activity. Numerous studies conducted in different parts of the world show that in volcanic areas the incidence of this tumour is significantly higher than the national average. In the present work, we propose an exploratory study of the spatial distribution of TC in Eastern Sicily, where the Mt. Etna is located. Georeferencing the data provided by the Cancer Registry of Eastern Sicily, we will provide a visualization of the phenomenon through geographical maps, highlighting the areas with significantly higher incidence than expected. We will then apply the generalized Ripley’s K-function and the local Moran’s I to verify the presence of high-risk areas, taking into account both the proximity to the volcano and the non-homogeneous distribution of the population over the territory. Our results seem to confirm the consolidated opinion that the presence of a volcano can determine the increase in the incidence of TC.

The seismic vulnerability assessment of a city is usually based on buildings’ characteristics, underground geophysical properties, socio-economic activities, and population density. This research highlights the value of a complete and manageable database for large-scale seismic vulnerability assessment of urban areas: such databases are often missing or partially developed for the majority of Italian cities. This study is based on the creation of a GIS database containing useful information to identify and valuate some indicators of seismic vulnerability in order to understand an earthquake’s effect for the actual configuration of a city. This system could be a growing source of information on cities and, if used in the proper way, a useful tool for monitoring, for seismic vulnerability assessment, and for spatial urban planning. The experience gained in this field of application can be transferred to other situations, both for the procedures and the workflow system.

The article investigates the development of food production in the Russian Federation, mainly considering the transition from a planned to a market economy. The period investigated is from the late 1980s to the present day. The scope of the inquiry is to assess the reasons for the food production crisis of the nineties and the subsequent recovery of the national food industry, which improved when Putin came to power. The research proceeds by examining the different approaches to food production adopted by the administrations of Gorbachev and Eltsin and, more recently, by Putin. It discusses, indeed, how the support provided by the State to the agro-food sector has evolved consistent with both national interests and geopolitical needs. In conclusion, the authors assess that the concept of self-sufficiency, also in terms of food production, has turned into a strategy for Russian Federation to preserve national security.

During the last decades, the active participation of the inhabitants in the interpretation, management and planning of landscape has assumed an increasingly important role, thanks to the challenges and understandings provided by the European Landscape Convention which advocated the participation and enhanced the role of the populations as fundamental sources of information. Despite the difficulties linked to the valorization of such assets, the comparison between expert and public views can favour the production of new knowledge as long as these information and sources could be compared and connected through fruitful approaches. The present contribution finds his roots in the development of Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional Landscape Plan and, adopting a participatory approach, tried to investigate the perceived landscapes of risk and degradation. The focus is on three categories of areas and sites perceived as degraded, specifically those resulting from the massive presence of abandonment former military areas, hydrogeological problems and, finally, quarry activities. After presenting the most relevant aspects and the results of the geo-cartographic analysis, the limits and opportunities of the research are highlighted. On the one hand, similarly to other participatory projects, the analysis presents problems in terms of quality and territorial coverage, on the other hand, it offers reflections on the possible synergies between local and expert knowledge.
