In this paper, measurements of the spectral occupancy in some high frequency (HF) bands in the Western part of Romania are presented. Signals have been acquisitioned by means of an Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) equipment and spectrum occupancy values have been calculated off-line for a set of frequency bands that present interest for establishing of a system for emergency communications. Calculations have been based on an energy detection criterion that is presented and discussed in the paper. Preliminary measurements performed simultaneously at two different locations, namely in Sibiu and Timişoara cities, Romania, are also reported and compared.

This paper presents a control strategy for optimal utilization of photovoltaic (PV) generated power in conjunction with an Energy Storage System (ESS). The ESS is specifically designed to be retrofitted into existing PV systems in an end-user application. It can be attached in parallel to the PV system and connects to existing DC/AC inverters. In particular, the study covers the impact such a modification has on the output power of existing PV panels. A distinct degradation of PV output power was found due to the different power characteristics of PV panel and ESS. To overcome such degradation a novel feedback system is proposed. The feedback system continuously modifies the power characteristic of the ESS to match the PV panel and thus achieves optimal power utilization. Impact on PV and Maximum Power Point tracking performance is analyzed. Simulation of the proposed system is performed in MATLAB/Simulink. The results are found to be satisfactory.

A.C.-A.C. converters are currently used in A.C. motor speed control, adjustable switching A.C. sources, A.C. voltage waveform restorers, electric heating, lighting control etc. In many applications, they replaced alternative voltage regulators that use thyristors or triacs due to their benefits: they are smaller, more efficient and the waveforms of the voltage, load current and input current are much better.

We deal with the problem of the linearization of the sensor characteristic and propose a novel linearization method. The importance of the problem resides in the need to optimize the operation of huge numbers of various sensors in sensor networks in cheap but efficient IOT and mobile applications required by today technologies. The implementation is founded by results in the field of fuzzy logic systems and has a low footprint in terms of program and data memory. Therefore, the solution may be advantageous in wearable systems, including those for medical applications, among others.

This paper deals with the removal of periodic noise patterns in microscopy images. The proposed method analyzes, determines and corrects the magnitude spectrum components. The denoising in frequency domain is known to be a better solution for preserving the fine details. Experimental results are provided.

This work investigates the downlink resource allocation (RA) problem in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based cognitive radio networks. The objective of this work is to develop a fair RA-algorithm that maximizes the capacity of secondary users (SUs) and in the same time limits the interference caused to the primary users. The fairness condition is formulated as a minimal data condition at SUs. A relaxed version of the RA-problem is first reviewed without adopting the fairness and then a heuristic algorithm is proposed based on the results obtained for the relaxed problem. Computer simulation results illustrate that the proposed heuristic algorithm can achieve near-optimal performance.

Satellite precision formation flying (PFF) is a concept in which multiple spacecraft communicate via an inter-satellite link (ISL) and cooperate to achieve the goal of a single, more complex satellite. This enables the creation of virtual scientific structures such as interferometers or imagers that would not be deployable in space because of their physical dimensions. PFF requires precise knowledge of the relative orientation and distance between the involved satellites. Determining the relative orientation is similar to estimating the angle of arrival (AoA) of the ISL. This paper presents an AoA estimation technique specific to Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (OFDM) communications systems. The AoA is calculated using the preamble that is necessary to synchronize the ISL. It is estimated from the phase of the correlation at maximum. The AoA estimator is evaluated under various SNR conditions using MATLAB simulations. The results show that the estimator accuracy improves as the distance between the receiver antennas approaches the half-wavelength condition.

This paper presents a novel algorithm for sparse signal recovery, named Least Squares Pursuit, based on least-squares minimization followed by choosing the atom with the largest resulting coefficient, in a greedy one-by-one fashion. It follows a similar approach to that of Orthogonal Matching Pursuit, but with different prioritization of the constraints. We propose an efficient implementation for Least Squares Pursuit, derive theoretical guarantees for signal recovery, and finally present promising simulation results.

The design of the finite impulse response (FIR) digital filters with linear phase is considered by cascading a prototype filter with complementary comb filters. The minimum attenuation in the stop band is increased and the complexity of implementation is reduced, because the complementary comb filters contain only adders and storage units. The prototype filter is designed by using grouped B-spline windows and a modified transfer function. In the proposed method, the composite filter maintains the linear phase, because the complementary comb filters have linear phase responses.

Visual saliency is the property of a scene to draw the attention of different people to the same objects within it. Its investigation and development enabled many practical applications. In this paper we aim to use it for the study of visual art. As a first contribution we introduce an extensive database annotated in terms of visual saliency by considering data acquired from many users. Secondly, based on visual saliency regions, we identify some core differences between various artistic movements represented within. Thirdly, we evaluate comparatively several state-of-the-art saliency prediction algorithms, so to identify the most performing in the context of digitized paintings.
