The theme of inhabiting in high-density buildings has been widely investigated since the Mid-Twentieth century. Still, original researches are now opening new perspectives, creating a common ground in which urban planning and architecture increasingly intersect with studies based on participation, urban policies and spatial justice. The failure of some of the iconic Twentieth-century architectures rose a strong debate that often resulted in their demolition. This process was primarily dictated by market logic, by a change in the residents and, above all, by the lack of all the services needed to build a community. Some experimental alternatives to replacing neglect building complexes have emerged especially in France and Northern Europe. The paper presents a selection of residential projects by Lacaton & Vassal, Mikhail Riches and LAN (Local Architecture Network), which use architectural drawings to propose innovative solutions to local administrations, as well as to initiate planning processes involving resident communities.

The squinches isa very versatile construction type in the field of stonework. It is defined in its most elementary case as the covering of a triangular area with a conical surface, but, nevertheless, there are an infinite number of variants increasing the complexity of the layout and its execution. The studied case in this paper is the development of the layout of the "square conical vault" (actually, a cantilevered vault), in the treatise on stonework by Tomás Vicente Tosca, published in 1727. This author's work reflectsthe tradition of the local area (which comes mainly from the brilliant episode of the 15th century in Valencia), but it is also part of the pre-illustrated cultural trends of the time. The traces that appear are the result of combining ancient graphic habits with the development, to a certain extent, already scientific, of geometry and mathematics. All this leads, in the case of the "conical-square vault", to the development of a fundamentally descriptive trace, result of a mentality that is more analytical than practical, but that does not manage to emancipate itself from the old building tradition, as this study makes evident, and also the detected graphic habits. The research is also based on other examples of a documentary nature, such as the cantilevered domes of Vandelvira, Philibert de l'Orme, Gelabert, and on a built example; the squinch of the palace of the Generalitat de Valencia.

Usually, articles and books about sustainability in building (and urban) sector are focused on environment, reuse, energy saving, solar and natural energy but the “social” sustainability is not considered as one topic for architects and engineers. But these professionals have to improve the quality of the life of the Human Being and to realize environments in which People can realize themselves safely and independently. The researches at the University of Pavia are focused on solutions to make inclusive the historical buildings and sites, looking for solutions that, at different scale, could be inserted respecting the history and the cultural environment but also improving the chance to visit and live according with the contemporary needs. The article shows the cultural approach and the method applied and some solutions that make clear this philosophy, with the awareness that each historic building and site is a unicum that needs answers that pay attention to the location, the history, the cultural and social background, the real needs and the aim of the complete project.

Which is the meaning of researching and working in the field of the digital survey at the beginning of the XXIth century? Are the scholars and professionals planning procedures and strategies or just producing an enormous amount of digital data which destiny will be a colossal data loss? Starting from a reflection about “where we are” after 20 years of active digital survey for built heritage this article will try to trace some points about how to start and to plan digital survey intervention when the task is not merely professional and when the new survey bases are supposed to be used in a “liquid” context. From the massive machines and procedures of the XXth century, producing quite “light” amount of data, in the last two decades these tools passed to be lightweight in their hardware, while the amount of gathered data increased continuously, in what it seems an unstoppable process. But massive data gathering maybe it is not knowledge by itself and the information society, especially in its next evolutions, will need contents and versatile data to support and link our present to the heritage values. A specific reflection on the value of digital survey and procedures will be held here not in the pretention of finding a stable paradigm but in the will of stimulating the discussion in a field often tempted by simply technical solutions.

The paper explains the process used in a research project whose objective was the reconstruction of the hyperbolic-parabolic surfaces of a selection of non-built projects designed by Félix Candela. The workflow was based on an automation process. After setting up the variables and define a procedural design, it has been possible to obtain the variation of the projects designed by Candela. The virtual reconstruction was done using models parameterized with Grasshopper and experimentally with Houdini FX.The results are valid not only for their scientific debate but also can have an educational role in the fields of geometry and architectural communication.

This article expresses the opportunity in turning final projects into the beginnings of an investigation and entrepreneurial project. The objective of the following study is the design of temporary accommodations for emergencies, be it because of natural causes or war, built with innovative materials in the market.A prototype that possesses these essential characteristics needed for these types of situations is designed. Constructed quickly to take in the most amounts of people in the least amount of time possible, inexpensive to allow the purchase of governments does not allow reuse and does not generate waste, in other words, the materials can be recycled once the problem has ended or adapt it to become regular housing.Afterwards, the accommodations are developed in depth along with the furnishings so it may be occupied by couples, young people or others who change residence for work-related reasons frequently, people with low income or that would like to enjoy a house for an affordable price and lower than traditional housing.
