Due to the nature of job, unhealthy social habits and voice abuse, the people are subjected to the risk of voice problems. It is well known that most of vocal fold pathologies cause changes in the acoustic voice signal. Therefore, the voice signal can be a useful tool to diagnose them. Acoustic voice analysis can be used to characterize the pathological voices. This paper presents the detection of vocal fold pathology with the aid of the speech signal recorded from the patients. Time-domain features are proposed and extracted to detect the vocal fold pathology. The main advantages of this method are less computation time, possibility of real-time system development and it requires no transformation techniques (frequency transformation or time-frequency transformation). In order to test the effectiveness and reliability of the proposed time-domain features, a simple neural network model with systole activation function is proposed and trained by conventional back propagation (BP) algorithm. The classification accuracy of the proposed systole activated neural network is comparable with the results of neural network model with sigmoidal activation function. The simulation results show that the proposed systole activated neural network reduces the time taken for training the neural network.

Single frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is an inexpensive, quick and painless means of estimating body composition. In this paper, BIA parameters employed for predicting hemoglobin (Hb) in dengue patients. The BIA technique passes a low-amplitude electrical current, in the range of 500µA to 800µA, at a single frequency of 50 kHz. BIA data was sampled from 210 (comprises of 119 males and 91 females) serologically confirmed dengue fever (DF) and dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) patients, hospitalized at the Hospital Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM). After applying multiple regression analysis, it was found out that risk, number of day, anorexia, blood tendency and ERBO were found to be significant independent determinants of predicting the grading stages on DHF.

A new full-wave rectifier circuit employing only two differential difference current conveyors (DDCCs) is presented. The proposed circuit exhibits high input impedance, good temperature stability and wide bandwidth. It is extremely simple and compact, and suitable for IC implementation. The circuit also offers a low output impedance terminal, which is suitable for low impedance load. The simulation results demonstrate the performance of the proposed circuit.

A fundamental task associated with the use of error-correcting codes is recovering the original codeword from the corrupted received word. In this paper we develop a simulation program for the Reed-Solomon codes with an error correction capability of [(n−k)/2]. Three RS codes are chosen to be simulated using MATLAB with Quadrature Amplitude Modulation (QAM) scheme in AWGN channel. The Symbol Error Rate (SER) performance was evaluated and compared with its theoretical calculations.

Eye movement is the most common way for paralysis patients to communicate. Eye movement can be used by the paralysis patients and armless persons to perform simple tasks, for examples to activate a system in order to get attention or to switch home appliances on and off when they are alone. This study investigates the reliability of EOG signals for activating home appliances. A replica of a living room with a fixed location of the television and a switch was set up and the EOG signals were recorded when the subjects were sitting and standing at various positions. Various distances between the subject and the television and gaze angles were considered to obtain optimum EOG signals. An algorithm to detect the occurrence of the EOG signals was developed and its performance was examined. It was found that the proposed eye movement technique could produce clear EOG signals which are suitable for activating home appliances and the success percentage of the algorithm is 92%.

Robust control has been studied in recent years as an efficient methodology for the design of highly performing controllers of positioning systems. However, it is necessary to provide accurate nominal model and associated uncertainty bounds to design this type of controllers. The aim of this paper is to robustly identify a single axis high precision positioning system with uncertainties. For a given data set a nominal model is identified then model error modeling techniques are used to handle uncertainties in modeling. To examine the quality of the identified nominal and modeling error models H∞ is designed based on the identified uncertainties. Computer simulation and experimenting with the high precision positioning system verify that the obtained nominal model and modeling error model are reliable and the implemented approach can be used to develop an integrated identification and robust controller.

A variable fractional delay (VFD) filter is widely used in applications such as symbol timing recovery, arbitrary sampling rate conversion and echo cancellation. This paper presents an implementation of variable fractional delay filter on FPGA. The implementation utilizes an efficient structure so called Taylor structure. The main advantage of this structure is to reduce number of multiplier and adder when compared with Farrow structure or modified Farrow structure. The result of implementation will be reported as throughput and area utilization.

This paper presents the comparison of performances between a PID temperature controller and a conventional on-off temperature controller for home-applied refrigerator. A new PID temperature controller was designed to replace the conventional on-off temperature controller to maintain the inner temperature of a refrigerator. Both temperature controllers of the conventional system and the PID were designed and evaluated using MATLAB Simulink software. The simulation shows that the PID controller was found to be more consistent and effective in maintaining the inner temperature of the refrigerator despite rapid changes in the outer temperature, than the conventional on-off controller. The both simulation results provide full graphical development which is analyzed and have been compared. The effectiveness of the PID control system and its ability to maintain the inner temperature of the refrigerator consistently than the conventional on-off controller is shown.

In this research, holes mobility enhancement is studied using Silicon Germanium, SiGe technology. SiGe is deposited on silicon substrate to increase carrier mobility in the device thus will increase the drive current too. The main focus of the research is to investigate the effect of using SiGe on holes mobility. In addition, variation thicknesses of SiGe on device characteristic are also studied. Technology nodes that involve in this research are 0.9 µm, 0.8 µm and 0.7 µm. The research has been carried out using Silvaco simulation software. From the modelling result, it is observed that 100% of mobility enhancement was observed for SiGe compared to conventional PMOS.

The sound of working vehicle provides an important clue for engine faults diagnosis. Endless efforts have been put into the research of fault diagnosis based on sound. It offers concrete economic benefits, which can lead to high system reliability and save maintenance cost. A number of diagnostic systems for vehicle repair have been developing in recent years. Artificial Neural Network is a very demanding application and popularly implemented in many industries including condition monitoring via fault diagnosis. This paper presents a feature extraction algorithm using total entropy of 5 level decomposition of wavelet transform. The engine noise signal is decomposed into 5 levels (A5, D5, A4, D4, A3, D3, A2, D2, A1, D1) using Daubechies “db4” wavelet family. From the decomposed signals, the entropy is applied for each levels and the feature are extracted and used to develop a backpropagation neural network.
