Conventionalism Ancient Reflection on Language Abstract: The question of the basis of linguistic signifi- cance is raised for the first time in Plato’s Cratylus , in the context of the opposition between nature ( φύσις ) and convention ( νόμος ), on which later debate about the matter was also based. This work presents an over- view of the most important theoretical aspects of the arguments of the naturalist and conventionalist theses as presented and defended in Cratylus and in other texts of the Ancient tradition, and outlines a typology of the varieties of both positions as offered in that tradition.

This paper studies the fraught chapter (V.7) of the Nicomachean Ethics concerning natural justice. It argues that the main tradition of commentary on the chapter has strayed onto a wrong path by misconstruing two quite precise junctures in the argument. When those two errors are corrected, there emerges an Aristotle who, far from being a champion of natural law theory in ethics, holds that the moral principles with which humans are naturally endowed are variable, and that in two senses. Not only do these moral principles vary across space and time, but also they can be deliberately modified by habituation.

Love and memory: a Platonic strategy for identity and immortality Abstract: Here, I address the link between ἔρως- μνήμη as a strategy to attain identity and immortality in two platonic dialogues. In the Symposium I show that love and memory help to: i) a faithful survival of the ἑρωτικοὶ λόγοι in the narrative weaving; ii) an aliud pro alio preservation of identity and immortality through the procreation of individuals of the same species, enduring productions in the cultural field and the body-mind elements of each individual. In the Phaedrus I tackle the interconnection “love-reminiscence-personal identity-immortality” in order to distinguish: i) those who, being unable to recall the eidetic realm, reproduce their psychosomatic configuration at the present time and similar psychosomatic configurations in their next lives; ii) the philosophers for whom, thanks to their love for the beautiful, ἀνάμνησις and a god-like immortality are available along with their sharing in the noetic activity of winged Eros.

: This article presents some of the most influential philosophical insights on memory, truth and justice in the Christian Middle Ages. In all of them are present, in different proportion, the two mainstream traditions, Neoplatonism and Aristotelianism. St. Augus- tine, Avicenna and Thomas Aquinas incarnate perspec-tives increasingly deplatonized on memory. As for the concept of truth, both Augustine’s theocentric and Aquinas’s adequationist standards are expressions of a mainstream that declines in the XIV th century. Finally, while Augustine introduces critically Cicero’s definition of justice, rooted in the Greek-Roman theory of natural law, Aquinas coordinates systematically Christian the-ism, natural law and Aristotelian political naturalism.
