The authors propose an optical fiber loop transmission system for narrowband telecommunications services combined with a switched broadband digital access for enhanced video and data services. The narrowband telecommunications services could be transmitted in the 1300-nm optical window using a passive optical network (PON) architecture. The switched broadband digital access is wavelength division multiplexed onto the narrowband network using the 1550-nm window or integrated with the narrowband network in the 1300-nm window. The switched broadband digital access takes advantage of low bit rate ( approximately 6 Mb/s) entertainment quality video encoding in order to provide enhanced video services such as premium entertainment video, educational television, and video telephony. Enhanced data service such as SMDS and switched DS-1 can be provided using this architecture.<>

Forecasting the demand for new telecommunication services 预测新电信服务的需求

A forecasting method that is applicable for new services, where little historical data have been recorded, is proposed. The method uses estimators based on economical, demographic and traffic data. Compared to traditional forecasting procedures that are built upon a solid historical record of data, the method is clearly found to be weaker numerically. However, for novel services it has the advantage that it provides a result, where the traditional method would fail because the data record is too weak. Furthermore, the method has the advantage that as soon as further data become available, it can be refined to provide even better results.<>

Encryption techniques for broadcast communication 广播通信的加密技术

A broadcast technique for encrypted communication is proposed that offers high levels of security with high transmission efficiency. Any encryption algorithm can be used without significantly degrading ciphertext length. The proposed scheme can use parallel processing techniques to realize rapid encryption speeds. Plaintext is processed to yield one common component and as many individual components as there are receivers. Because the common component is used for all receivers, the ciphertext is relatively short. If a public key cryptosystem is used, any receiver's decrypted plaintext can be compared with that of another receiver, thus preventing malicious sender attack.<>

Performance evaluation of a near-far resistant frequency-hopping multiple-access communication system 近远抗跳频多址通信系统的性能评价

The performance of an FHMA-MFSK (frequency-hopped multiple access multilevel frequency shift keying) system considered as a possible candidate for the European Space Station's communication system is examined. Performance evaluation is based on analyses and simulations, the latter requiring selection of particular system parameters. The driving specification of the envisaged system is the high dynamic range, resulting in considerably large interference-to-desired-signal power ratios. Some form of clipping at the receiver side is mandatory, but performance improvement can be achieved by quantizing the spectrum analyzer output signals to more than single-bit quantization. Furthermore the overall system performance can be considerably improved by applying tone shaping/windowing on the transmitted tones. Care must be taken to provide sufficient tone separation for the envisaged shaping/windowing scheme.<>

Motion compensated multiresolution transmission of HDTV 高清电视的运动补偿多分辨率传输

Two methods to perform multiresolution transmission of HDTV (high-definition television) through subband coding are compared. A simple compression technique is frame-by-frame encoding of the spatial subbands of the video. The authors have used the subband decomposition in hierarchical estimation of the motion in the video as well as in encoding the error in a progressive transmission system. One can use either pel recursion or block matching for the motion estimation in a 2D QMF pyramid. By simulating on a test sequence, the authors obtained a gain of 2 dB using motion compensation over frame-by-frame coding.<>

The role of SDH and ATM in broadband access networks SDH和ATM在宽带接入网中的作用

With the introduction of equipment using the synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH), network operators are providing an infrastructure for the support of many different services. It is shown how this basic infrastructure will be developed to support asynchronous transfer model (ATM) based services, and thereby evolve to broadband ISDN (integrated services digital networks). SDH synchronous multiplexing at base rates of 155 Mbit/s and higher will provide the backbone transport for all services from telephony to broadband. The method of carrying services will initially be based on synchronous transfer mode (STM) and the lower levels of the synchronous multiplexing hierarchy. This method of transport is sufficient for services as they exist today and for the next few years. The use of SDH will allow a greater flexibility in the selection of service rates by its property of allowing bandwidth to be concatenated. Even greater flexibility will be provided by the use of ATM. As well as providing additional bandwidth flexibility, it allows efficient carriage of variable bandwidth service.<>

On the performance of an asymmetrical digital subscriber lines QAM transceiver 非对称数字用户线路QAM收发器的性能研究

The author presents an analysis of an asymmetrical digital subscriber line (ADSL) transceiver that uses the quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) passband transmission system. Output signal-to-noise ratio curves versus carrier and guardband frequencies are presented for the 16-, 64-, and 256-point rectangular constellations, assuming ADSL impairments consisting of self-far-end crosstalk, thermal noise generated by the loop, and receiver noise that is generated primarily by amplifiers in the front-end of the receiver. The simulation results show that an ADSL system with these impairments is viable even on loops that are at the extreme range of the loop plant. In addition, 16-QAM signaling generally performs better than any of the other constellations. The study assumed perfect timing and carrier recovery.<>

Performance analysis of a slotted CDMA system for indoor wireless communication using a Markov chain model 基于马尔可夫链模型的室内无线CDMA系统性能分析

A performance analysis is outlined of a star-connected direct-sequence spread-spectrum slotted code-division multiple-access (CDMA) system with differential phase shift keying modulation in an indoor radio environment characterized by Rician fading. The performance is analyzed in terms of the throughput, delay, and stability of the CDMA network. The traffic load is described by a discrete time Markov chain model for a finite number of simultaneous users. Two types of diversity, namely selection diversity and maximal ratio combining, are used to combat multipath fading. Also, the influence of forward error correcting coding on the performance parameters is investigated.<>

Performance analysis of multiclass traffic in ATM networks ATM网络中多类流量的性能分析

In B-ISDN (broadband integrated services digital network) the ATM (asynchronous transfer mode), which is fixed-length packet transport scheme, is a promising proposal. Since the packet length is fixed, it has the potential to perform various service requests of users. Thus, the authors present a queueing model which has two kinds of user sources, priority source and nonpriority source. Priority cells get superior service to nonpriority cells, because of their delay-critical natures; it is assumed that the arrival of nonpriority cells, including the blocked and retransmitted cells, is a Poisson process. Based on this model, the discard probability of the priority cells and the mean delay time of the nonpriority cells are evaluated, and they are validated by computer simulations. The numerical results show that the performance of nonpriority cells is also highly dependent upon the arrival pattern of priority cells.<>

Priority cells get superior service to nonpriority cells, because of their delay-critical natures; it is assumed that the arrival of nonpriority cells, including the blocked and retransmitted cells, is a Poisson process. Based on this model, the discard probability of the priority cells and the mean delay time of the nonpriority cells are evaluated, and they are validated by computer simulations. Communications network design and planning 通信网络设计与规划

An overview of the key topics discussed at the 13th International Teletraffic Congress (ITC13) held in Copenhagen, Denmark, in June 1991, particularly the sessions on network design and planning, is given. Nineteen papers were presented at these sessions. Four issues that are of particular importance to ISDN design and planning are emphasized: design of networks with digital information transfer capabilities; design of networks with advanced network/traffic control techniques; use of GOS and reliability objectives for network design and planning; and design of intelligent networks.<>
