A statistical approach to modelling the network performance of fibre-in-the-loop systems 光纤在环系统网络性能建模的统计方法

The authors describe a statistical approach to modeling the performance of optical networks in the local loop. A quantitative discussion is given on the advantages of a statistical modeling technique over the previously used worst-case analysis. A dynamic frame-based DQDB protocol for Gbit/s local and metropolitan area networks 用于 Gbit/s 局域网和城域网的基于动态帧的 DQDB 协议

A fixed frame-based distributed queue dual bus (FB-DQDB) medium access protocol was previously proposed (P.C. Wong, 1991) for gigabit-per-second local and metropolitan area networks (LANs and MANs). This protocol allows each station to transmit a number of consecutive slots up to the limit of a frame size. The protocol is extended by allowing the headend to modify the frame size dynamically according to the request traffic. The new dynamic frame-based DQDB protocol (DF-DQDB) can therefore give a better throughput performance for variable size messages. Various performance aspects of this protocol are studied through simulation.<>

Trellis coded orthogonal frequency division multiplexing for digital video transmission 栅格编码正交频分复用数字视频传输

The combination of an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) technique and a coding scheme is seen as a promising broadcasting system to cope with the frequency-selective and time-variant channel. The first application of this technique using a convolutional coding scheme has been implemented within the framework of the Eureka DAB (digital audio broadcasting) project. It is shown how to double the existing spectrum efficiency of the system with the association of trellis-coded modulation and an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing technique with the aim of offering the transmission capacity in a TV channel necessary for a high-quality video signal.<>

A 16-ary differentially encoded quadrature amplitude modulation (16-DEQAM) demodulator for medium- and high-bit-rate (from 2 Mb/s to 100 Mb/s) land mobile satellite communication is proposed, and its performance is evaluated. The digital synchronization and digital detection techniques used in this system are described. The hardware speed limitations have been overcome effectively with extensive use of lookup tables and concurrent digital signal processing on a polar signal representation. The bit error rate (BER) performance was evaluated by computer simulation over additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) and Rician fading channels.<>

A technique is presented to satisfy the demand for customized user service through virtual private data networks (VPDN). It is reported that VPDN allows the creation and management of software defined private networks within the confines of the wide-area network (WAN). This solution is economically advantageous to customers because these private networks do not require capital investment in communication equipment. Its flexibility allows service providers to quickly introduce customized network environments. Virtual private data networks are secure, simple to manage, and easy-to-use.<>

The author presents a prototype system designed to support distributed work groups. The system is based on a communication concept that integrates synchronous and asynchronous communication modes. A photonic fast packet switch is proposed for low-latency intra-node routing in high-speed optical networks. Applications are demonstrated in telecommunication and parallel computer environments. The switch fabric is based on integrated directional-coupler technology. It has low complexity and is geometrically suitable for real-estate efficient single-substrate implementation. The switching architecture relies on time division multiplexing an optically coupled tree-structured active routing stage. Both synchronous and asynchronous TDM operation modes are modeled and analyzed to obtain packet buffering and total switching latencies.<>

The authors consider technical options aimed at enhancing the reliability and availability of fiber-based local access connections (between local exchange and customer premises). Attention is paid both to point-to-point business connections and to point-to-multipoint fiber to the curb residential connections. The various alternatives are compared from the end-to-end channel availability point of view. The specific values regarding failure rates and times-to-repair come from experience gained within Telefonica's fiber network. Detailed Markov diagrams are given, making possible the evaluation of the effects that other figures of failure rates and times to repair would have on availability. The alternatives assessed include: connections with terminal-multiplexer redundancy; connections with terminal-multiplexers and cable-path redundancy; and connections with cable-path redundancy engineered with advanced photonic switching devices.<>

Effect of contention resolution rules on the performance of deflection routing 争用解决规则对偏转路由性能的影响

The authors investigate the effect of contention resolution (CR) rules on the performance of deflection routing. A new livelock-free prioritized CR rule, which is based on a packet's distance to the destination and the number of deflections suffered by it, is proposed. The performance-in terms of the average throughput, the average network delay and the delay distribution-of this CR rule is compared with those of other commonly used CR rules. Results show that prioritized CR rules improve the performance in networks using unbuffered deflection routing. It is observed that prioritized CR rules have hardly any effect on the performance of buffered deflection routing. These results suggest that using the random CR rule with output buffers is a better way to improve the performance than implementing complicated CR rules which sacrifice the switching speed inherent in deflection routing.<>

Several models are presented for overlapping coverage areas based on hexagonal, square and linear layouts of cells. Mixtures of these arrangements, as well as less regular configurations, are likely to arise as cellular and microcellular systems are deployed in high-density communication traffic areas and along roadways. For each layout, the fraction of total area that is covered by a given number of fixed sites is determined and plotted as a function of transceiver range.<>
