Broadband multichannel WDM transmission with superluminescent diodes and LEDs 宽带多通道WDM传输与超发光二极管和led

The authors investigate the use of superluminescent diodes (SLDs) and light emitting diodes (LEDs) in broadband multichannel WDM (wavelength division multiplexing) transmission. This technique, known as spectral slicing, may afford important advantages over traditional laser-based WDM in many network applications. The authors describe three system demonstrations using combinations of SLDs, LEDs, and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers to achieve spectrally sliced transmission over 4 to 16 WDM channels at bit rates up to 155 Mb/s per channel. A generalized power-budget analysis of spectrally sliced transmission is then presented and compared with experimental results. The investigation quantifies key trade-offs in the design of spectrally sliced WDM networks, and identifies opportunities for extension and optimization of system performance.<>

The authors propose a QoS (quality of service) framework which strikes a balance between the quality criteria of the service providers and the quality requirement of the users. The effect of data modulation on sigma delta and modified delay-locked loop operation 数据调制对σ δ和改进的延时锁环操作的影响

Computer simulations were used to examine the effects of data modulation on the discriminator output of the sigma-delta and modified noncoherent delay-locked loops. The results show how data-modulation-induced transients in the received signal detract from the performance of the tracking loops by forcing discriminator IF (intermediate frequency) filters into a continuous transient state. Furthermore, the loops are somewhat vulnerable to an internal gain imbalance resulting from an improper choice of the code phase used for spreading the data bits. A measurement approach is applied to both loops to combat the effect of data modulation.<>

A technique is presented that promises high-quality data from bandlimited channels at lower received power in digital transmission systems. Data transmission in such systems often suffers from intersymbol interference (ISI) and noise. Two separate techniques, channel coding and equalization, have produced considerable advances in the state of communication systems, and both concern themselves with removing the undesired effects of a communication channel. Equalizers mitigate the ISI, whereas coding schemes are used to incorporate error-correction. It is shown that an integrated approach realizes gains in excess of that of a simple juxtaposition.<>

The issue of gigabit ATM packet switching, which has potential applications in emerging B-ISDN as well as in the gigabit testbed experiments, is discussed. The authors use the theory of a growable switch architecture consisting of a column of small output packet switch modules preceded by a memoryless cell distribution network. This architecture permits modular growth with the best possible (output-queuing) delay-throughput performance for arbitrary traffic distributions. An optical star-coupler-based arrangement for the cell distribution network is proposed.<>

A description is given of a workstation architecture, Liaison, that solves the high bandwidth problem for real-time video and allows the exploration of these communications issues. By distributing the workstation's intelligence over a high-performance network, both the computation and communication load are shed to other processors on the network. The Liaison display performs only the low-level functions of acquiring and displaying images, whereas the remainder of the workstation's functionality is performed by a pool of distributed processors. Initial experiences with this architecture using a prototype monochrome workstation have provided insight into the issues surrounding the control and processing of communications-intensive applications.<>

Field trials of a spread spectrum mobile satellite system using ETS-V satellite 利用ETS-V卫星的扩频移动卫星系统的现场试验

The performance of a direct sequence spread spectrum (DS/SS) communication system in land mobile satellite channels is evaluated with experiments. Field test results in the L-band with the ETS-V satellite are presented, in which the use of a multibit-quantized coherent matched filter receiver improves the initial acquisition and the bit error rate performances. The bit error rate characteristics in urban and suburban environments are found to agree with those of non-SS BPSK (binary phase-shift keyed) on a nonselective Rician fading channel.<>

The Earth Observing System (EOS) is planned as a space-based measurement system, Earth-science research program, and data and information system (EOSDIS). It will consist of several observatories with multiple Earth sensing instruments to provide investigators with a thorough, long-term view of the Earth's environment. The ECS will command and control the observatories consisting of core service platforms and science instruments, and it will transport, process, and store the EOS data, provide access to the data for years, and support researchers. A new adaptive digital filter architecture for parallel output and update computations and its application to a high-speed digital subscriber line (HDSL) equalizer prototype are described. This architecture uses an output/update multiply-accumulate (MAC) pair to compute a finite impulse response (FIR) filter output in parallel with the updating of the filter taps via the leaky LMS algorithm. The MAC pair architecture provides a more efficient structure for adaptive filtering than would the use of its two processors in a normal serial LMS implementation. A second level of parallelism allows the use of multiple MAC pairs to implement long adaptive FIR filters. The viability of this architecture is demonstrated through experimental results obtained for a 800-kb/s HDSL equalizer research prototype.<>
