Through extensive numerical studies, we showed that the cumulated nonlinear phase can be considered as a relevant parameter to assess the performance of N /spl times/ 40 Gbit/s terrestrial systems, after calibration. This can be of high interest for constraint based-routing algorithms in Ultra-Long haul transparent networks: indeed, a node could decide, with the knowledge of the nonlinear phase and OSNR evolution, whether a path should be regenerated or not.

A stable, dispersion-tuned HMLFRL has been demonstrated. SMN was significantly reduced by introducing a SOA into the ring cavity (13-dB improvement in side-mode suppression). Only a 0.25-MHz variation in the modulation frequency was needed to achieve a 10-nm smooth wavelength tuning. Both temporal and spectral widths remained approximately the same during tuning. A 5.3-ps pulse width was obtained at 10 GHz with pulse compression.

The group delay of a chromatic dispersion compensation grating module was measured using the phase-shift method and the system performance was predicted using a Fourier transform algorithm. Good agreement was obtained between the system simulation and the measured eye-diagram. This numerical prediction is accurate only with a proper choice of the wavelength resolution used for the group delay measurement.

Here we report on a new pump scheme which allows for the first time high capacity transmission in the C and L band over unrepeatered distances >200 km. A total capacity of 3.2 Tb/s (80/spl times/42.5 Gb/s) over the unrepeatered C+L band transmission distance of 220 km PSCF was achieved. We identified the OSNR as the critical impairment in the experiment and discussed further possibilities for system performance enhancement.

A three-wavelength reconfigurable cascaded Raman laser has been demonstrated in a phospho-silicate fiber using two types of Raman shifts. This laser provides high slope efficiencies compared to germano-silicate fiber lasers and control of the output powers. It enables to reduce (a) Output Stokes powers and total power versus pump power (b) Output spectrum with equalized power at the three output wavelengths.

This paper has described measurements of transient gain effects caused by dropping channels in a wide bandwidth backward pumped discrete Raman amplifier. These measurements have shown that in a WDM amplifier the transients include two different features. There is a small but fast component due to signal-to-signal Raman crosstalk which can either increase or decrease the signal power depending on whether the surviving channels are at a longer or shorter wavelength than the dropped channels. There is also a larger, slower component due to pump readjustment which occurs on a time scale determined by the length of the amplifier. After changing the signal power at the input to the amplifier it requires up to three times the transit time of the amplifier for the new steady state to be reached.

A new scheme of compensation combining first-order compensation and relevant ISOP control was proposed. Its interest lies in the fact that it avoids staying a long time on sub-optimum, yielding poor performance of the compensator. It has proved to be a good and a simple means to improve the value of tolerable polarisation mode dispersion (PMD) in the line up to 37% of bit-time.

We have developed the EA modulator with narrow-ridge waveguide to obtain the sufficient extinction ratio with the shorter modulators. Narrowing the waveguide reduces device capacitance from 0.12 pF to 0.08 pF without decrease of the extinction ratio. The modulation bandwidth of 40 GHz at -1 V bias voltage, and the extinction ratio of 15 dB at 0 V to -2.5 V operation voltage are obtained. From the viewpoint of frequency bandwidth and extinction ratio for practical use, it may be concluded that the narrow mesa waveguide structure is suitable for 40 Gb/s optical transmitter devices.
