Depression and anxiety are common mental health disorders worldwide. People with psychiatric disorders often lack the ability to deal with aspects/activities of daily life. This article describes the development of the Compass app, an app designed to help individuals suffering from mental health disorders. The app presents organizational and planning tools to improve the daily life of these individuals, and, consequently, their well-being. A user-centered design approach was employed in the development of the app, and design requirements were established based on the literature on Mental Health, Psychology, Information and Graphic Design. A functional prototype of the app was created for user testing, and a satisfaction questionnaire was conducted with potential users. The results showed that Compass was a useful and usable app, and that its interface design was easy to interact with and navigate. The results also showed that there were some problems with the design of the app. These problems were taken into consideration in the redesign stage and led to improvements.

This paper presents a study about the information behaviour of users during spatial orientation in a hospital in Brazil. The theoretical basis of the study draws on wayfinding processes, spatial cognition and aspects of human information behaviour. Moreover, the case study reported employed thewib-methodology. The results point out the main behavioural strategies employed by users when finding their way in a hospital, and the information barriers related to the signage and the elements of the built environment. The results ratify the need for a human centred design approach so as to develop effective wayfinding design solutions.

This article is the result of initial tests and studies about two systems for chromatic representation. It introduces and discusses the use and importance of two graphic codes created in Portugal as well as their graphic application on information and communication systems in an inclusive manner for individuals with different chromatic perceptions and needs. Designed mainly for people with colour blindness and visual impairment, ColorADD and Feelipa Color Code are alternatives for colour representation via graphic and tactile mediums. From pilot tests, the application, usage and impact of these systems on society and education have been investigated via field research and interviews with their creators, developers and users.

Information design principles are overlooked in cyber security awareness websites. An Information Design Process Model has been devised to help frame and interpret how online information is processed and the role information design principles play in facilitating that processing. Two websites have been compared, and results show significant differences in terms of performance, behavior and perception. The results also show that in situations where serious information is at stake, such as cyber security, a more accessible design does not seem to be sufficient to project a sense of trust and security among users. All these findings have led to original insights regarding the design of online information in terms of lasting impression and user-centered design approaches.

GPS-enabled mobile maps are now commonly used to wayfind in urban locations. Though increasingly efficient and more widely available, little attention has been paid to how novel approaches to the design of the visual interface may support particular user-experiences. This article presents the results of a practice-based study focusing on the design of an interface which allows walkers to maintain an awareness of the surrounding environment as they wayfind. Through an iterative process, a mixed-fidelity working prototype was developed and tested in a field setting. Results indicate that the interface promoted a high level of awareness of the surrounding environment.

University years are a critical period for weight gain primarily due to unhealthy changes in eating behavior in students. This is the first study to focus on the impact of tailored information design approaches on the awareness and retention of obesity related information, specifically by university students. A motion graphics was developed through a comprehensive user-centered research and design process that involved a scoping study (observation, questionnaire and focus group), usability testing (five stages of iteration), and a performance test. The results show low previous knowledge and a statistical significant impact on the understanding of information with a tailored user-centered motion graphics.

This article examines the role of visual metaphor for moral-political cognition. It makes use of a large corpus of 250 multimodal op-eds about the Euro crisis and lays the foundation for establishing a general system of image-text relations in the op-ed genre. Specifically, the paper addresses the following questions: Is there a difference between a cartoon and an illustration? Why do not op-ed illustrations have captions? What role does layout play in conveying meaning? How do ‘op-ed’ and ‘illustration’ relate to each other in terms of the metaphors and moral values employed in both of them? What is the nature of the relationship between the two? How does the illustrating process work? Should the text and image be considered as a single unit or as two separate (though related) units? Moreover, the results of this research will show that visual metaphors can exert a strong effect on individuals’ moral-political cognition.

Considering the current demands for the inclusion of diversity in most sectors of society, how to contemplate the question of place of speech in the discursive dimension of graphic/information design? This article presents a brief conceptual panorama of the relation between discourse and place of speech. In order to better understand this relation, we consider it both within the theoretical and practical scope of graphic/information design. At first, the poststructuralist influence on graphic design is presented and, then, the notion of place of speech is discussed, drawing attention to its uses and contradictions. Finally, the importance of giving a place to speech is highlighted, and heuristic orientations towards the discursive dimension of contemporary graphic/information design are proposed.
