Perceiving aesthetics in watching dance is a complex field of research, yet the component of space in general and stage setups, in particular in dance, is rarely studied. This study investigates the space on stage through the stage setups used in dance competitions. The main goal was to explore the aesthetic preferences of symmetry and the front-facing direction of shapes in a dance presentation. The investigation tries to determine how observers with differing dance experiences perceive the aesthetics of V-setups, diagonal lines, and their involved dancers by mirroring and turning shapes and bodies.Categorised into three groups (modern dancers, other dancers, non-dancers), 72 active female participants from dance studios and college sports courses evaluated the perceived aesthetics of eight arranged stage setups through a video ranking. Nine motion-captured avatars performed the hip-hop bounce movement in each setup. The participant’s task was to rank the presented stage setups based on their aesthetic perception. The ranking was illustrated with the means values, and the 5% significance criterion was tested with the Friedman-ANOVA.The stage setups are perceived differently by the observers. The V-setups reached higher aesthetic scores than the diagonal lines. Only the group of modern dancers showed no preference for the V versus the diagonals. There was a significant difference between the direction of the arranged dancers on stage. The setups with all dancers’ bodies front-facing are aesthetically preferred. Furthermore, the regular V-setup with its top to the front and with all dancers’ bodies facing the front achieved the highest score in the aesthetic evaluation. The results provide evidence that the feature of symmetry is a driving factor in perceiving aesthetics in dance. The V-setup can be suggested for use in dance choreographies to improve the aesthetic value of observers. Also, the direction of the dancers facing the front is recommended and should be used in dance stage setups.

Ankle injuries are common in volleyball players and are linked to the athlete’s postural control. The aim of the report is to investigate the differences between ankle functions and postural control ability of volleyball players and controls, and also the relationship between the variables in order to understand the factors affecting postural control.40 female participants (age: 21.18 ± 0.27, volleyball players/controls: 20/20) were included in the study. Ankle functions (joint range of motion (ROM), joint position sense (JPS), vibration and isometric muscle strength) and postural control variables (anterior-posterior and medial-lateral sway velocity, ellipse area and perimeter) were evaluated by static stability test. The differences between the groups and the correlation between variables were analysed.Significant differences favoured the volleyball group in ankle dorsiflexion, inversion, and eversion ROM, JPS, dorsiflexor and plantar flexor isometric muscle strength, and postural control variables (p < 0.05). However, the control group demonstrated superior vibration sensitivity on the 1st and 5th metatarsal heads (p < 0.05). A significant correlation was observed between the anterior-posterior sway velocity and dorsiflexion ROM, medial-lateral sway velocity and sway area with inversion ROM, sway area and vibration threshold in the 1st and 5th metatarsal heads (p < 0.05).Volleyball players showed better results in ankle ROM, JPS, muscle strength and postural control. In addition to the similarities in ankle plantar flexion ROM, invertor and evertor isometric muscle strength between the groups, the controls showed better vibration sensitivity; which reveals potential causes of ankle injuries in volleyball players. Ankle function variables are found to be linked to postural control, highlighting the need to evaluate these functions for injury prevention.

Sailing is a water sport comprising several disciplines distinguished by the type of boat and number of crew. The sailor must constantly accommodate the movement of the hull according to the weather conditions. The study aims to provide targeted guidance regarding training and nutrition for sailor athletes.Complete and effective training requires a synergistic combination of sport-specific elements and strategies designed to improve overall strength. Extensive discussion has been made of the types of workouts aimed at improving performance and preventing injury. Our research findings revealed that even though sailors’ training considers the development of strength, endurance, speed, balance, and coordination, which are necessary to counteract the continuous adaptations of posture to weather conditions, these athletes are exposed to the risk of injuries that predominantly affect the knee and lower back. Sailing is an aerobic/ anaerobic sport in which there are no explicit suggestions regarding the nutritional aspect and supplementation and what their contribution could be in improving performance. We hypothesise that targeted training paths for sailing athletes and personalisation of nutritional suggestions by timing the intake of macro- and micronutrients as well as taking specific supplements, can reduce the risk of injury and better impact recovery and performance in this discipline.

The aim of the study was to identify the distinguishing characteristics of the swing movement of the world’s top dancesport couples through kinematic variables. The study involved six world-class and six intermediate dance couples. The couples were asked to execute three identical series of three natural turns of the figure in a Viennese Waltz, all being filmed as they danced to music. Six international experts evaluated all the trials of each couple from the point of view of the technical quality component based on the Absolute Judging System. A triaxial rotational angular velocity measurement (gyroscope) device was placed on the dorsal part of the pelvic girdle and on the posterior part of the thorax of each competitor. An analysis of covariance demonstrated that regardless of the sports level, the maximum hip girdle angular rotation velocity in the forward swing movement performed by men was significantly related to the judging score achieved (F1,9 = 11.5; p < 0.05; ηp2 = 0.45).The mean squares of the differences of the hip and thoracic spine angular rotation velocity signals were found to be a good criterion for evaluating the swing movement, which is related to the judges’ evaluation. The descriptions of the performance of complex rotational movements obtained in this study can find their application in the analysis, teaching, and evaluation of dance couples. This is one of the first studies in the literature that deals in detail with swing movement in sports dance.

The main objective of the study was to evaluate the correlations between fine movements of the hand, the tissue composition of the upper limb, and the occurrence of frailty syndrome in elderly people in the Polish population. The study included 998 individuals living alone aged 60 to 87 years. Anthropometric and bioelectrical impedance measurements were taken, tests of motor skills of the upper limbs and functional efficiency were performed, and the phenotype of physical weakness was assessed.Participants identified as pre-frailty were observed to score less favourably in motor skills tests compared to other participants. The significance of the differences between the males and females was confirmed for most tests of precision, coordination, and speed of the upper limbs, in addition to the number of aiming errors. A correlation was observed between reduced fine movements of the hand and age, reduced functional efficiency, and low muscle mass of the upper limbs. Of all the included hand motor tests, only hand tremor scores in the stability test did not affect the risk of pre-frailty.The study showed a significant, positive correlation between the fine movements of the hand, mainly with the weight and strength of the muscles of the upper limb, and negative in the case of the risk of frailty syndrome. It is advisable to focus on programs to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity, which translates into health and quality of life.

Flatfoot has been associated with an increased risk of lower limb injuries. Therefore, it is crucial to assess the efficacy of therapeutic interventions focused on foot realignment. This study aimed to investigate the effect of elastic tape on the motion of the forefoot, midfoot, and hindfoot in young women.Blinded self-controlled clinical trial. The study included 10 women aged 18–30 years with flat feet, as classified by the Foot Posture Index, to improve the homogeneity of the participants. Three-dimensional gait analysis of the 10 women with flatfoot was done without and with elastic tape. It was applied on the side with the greater magnitude of flatfoot (experimental) and the opposite side was used as the control. The Oxford Foot Model was used to assess the foot kinematics. Independent and paired t-tests, and the Wilcoxon and Mann–Whitney tests were used for comparisons.Elastic tape did not alter the spatial-temporal gait parameters, such as cadence, gait speed, double-support duration, single-support duration, step length, and step width. The tape did modify the frontal forefoot motion during initial contact, toe-off, and maximum pronation. These differences were confirmed through both intragroup and intergroup comparisons. The tape did alter the arch height and deformation, but these differences were observed only in intragroup comparisons. The tape did not affect the frontal hindfoot motion during the initial contact, toe-off, and maximum pronation. The application of the elastic tape altered the frontal forefoot motion in female participants in the short-term. It resulted in improved forefoot supination during the initial contact, toe-off and maximum pronation. The tape did not influence the arch height or the frontal hindfoot motion.

The study aimed to assess the emotional state of women in the early postpartum period during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study was carried out using the Perceived Stress Scale (PSS-10) and the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scales (EPDS). Sociodemographic data (e.g., age, marital status, education) and information concerning the women’s pregnancy and childbirth were collected using the authors’ own survey. That survey also included questions about childbirth-related fears, sources of knowledge about childbirth and infant care, physical activity and participation in childbirth classes. The study consisted of 224 postpartum women, of whom 124 were examined during the COVID-19 pandemic (between March and June 2021). The data obtained were compared with the results of the examinations carried out prior to the pandemic (100 women were examined between February 2019 and May 2019).In both of the analysed groups, the mean stress was at an average level. However, in the COVID-19 group, a significantly higher level of perceived stress was noted. In this group, most women were experiencing high levels of stress.Regardless of the research results, providing women with comprehensive perinatal care is essential, irrespective of the existing epidemiological situation in a given country.

Humans interact with the environment using sensory channels. Although vision is the main sensory channel, the auditory channel is excellent for learning when trained. Movement learning via auditory inputs requires sound analysis, such as sonification.Data on peak plantar pressure from 43 recreational runners were collected using Flexinfit resistive insoles. Participants wore Run Falcon 1.0 (Adidas) running shoes and were categorised into four groups: without pain; spine or hip pain; thigh or knee pain; and leg, ankle, or foot pain. Participants responded to whether they presented pain and whether it was related to running (training or races). Sonification data were collected using the TwoTone software. We used the C note in the first octave to transform numerical data into sounds according to the pressure magnitude. The sound file was decomposed using the Audacity software into a spectrogram illustrating the main frequency components and their amplitudes. The spectrogram made it possible to identify qualitative differences between the runners with and without pain after running. The frequency spectrum showed that some frequencies had greater sound intensity in runners without pain. Our results indicated differences between runners with and without pain after running using sonification. The frequency spectrum also indicated a difference in the sound intensity produced between the groups at specific frequencies.
