Abstract Hotel workers experience high levels of work demands that interfere with their leisure pursuits. This paper examined the effects of work-leisure conflict on job stress, life satisfaction, and turnover intention among hotel workers. A paper-and-pencil questionnaire was used to collect data from a convenience sample of 321 workers from 32 star-rated facilities in Accra. Based on PLS-SEM results, job stress increases turnover intentions among hotel employees. Within the job demands-resource (JD-R) model, work-leisure conflict triggers turnover intentions and increases job stress levels leading to a reduction in perceived life satisfaction of hotel workers.

Abstract The purpose of the study was to explore employees’ appraisals and coping responses to workplace incivility in the foodservice industry. Five group interviews with foodservice workers were conducted. 13 different types of experienced or witnessed incivility were identified. Positive-benign, irrelevant, and negative appraisals were found, as well as four major coping themes. These were active, passive, and proactive coping as well as reappraisal, encompassing twelve forms of coping behaviors. Additionally, workplace incivility was described as a daily stressor which can be expressed as a part of the workplace culture in the foodservice industry.

Abstract Researchers have implied that organizational success was contingent on the compatibility between employees and organizations in the past two decades, known as person-organization (PO) fit. This research study aimed to assess relationships between hotel organizational culture, employee personality types, and PO fit. Using a sample of 231 hourly and salaried employees from 14 upper upscale hotels, results revealed relationships between hotel organizational cultures and a particular personality type of hotel employees. The article offers practical and theoretical implications for assessing employee personality types and PO fit in light of the findings.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between work-family conflict, job satisfaction and mentoring by examining the effect of gender and working environment. The findings from the sample of 250 hotel managers indicate that WFC is negatively related to job satisfaction and career mentoring for two genders, although is positively related to socioemotional mentoring for female managers. Furthermore, WFC is positively related to both time and schedule flexibility and work demands for female managers. This study can be an initial step in establishing the crucial role of mentoring and flexibility on work-family interference for two genders.

Abstract Hotel housekeeping is associated with poor working conditions, including a prevalence of stress. In-depth interviews were conducted with hotel housekeepers to determine the impacts of their working conditions on stress and on their life before, during, and after the Covid-19 pandemic as well as to identify possible solutions. The results indicate that the interviewees all suffer from stress, the main sources of which are the workload and their treatment by their superiors. The pandemic has increased that stress by worsening their working conditions, deeply affecting their health and well-being, and exerting a considerable impact on their day- to-day life.

The moderating effect of hotel shift work on the relationship between employee work engagement and job satisfaction

Abstract Front office hotel employees engage in shift work to serve guests 24-hours a day. There has been a paucity of research on shift work systems in the lodging industry and its effects on engagement and satisfaction. Using moderated multiple regression analysis, the results of this study demonstrated that shift work systems did have a moderating effect on the relationship between engagement and satisfaction for hotel front office workers. Front desk employees exhibit higher engagement and satisfaction when working their preferred schedule. Employees working varying shifts significantly differed from employees working consistent shifts, thus implying operational managers need to discuss the employee scheduling preferences in the interview process and to reconsider scheduling practices for swing shift workers. This is the first study which demonstrates that shift work can foster hotel employees’ job satisfaction; and that the shift a hotel front desk agent works is a mechanism between work engagement and job satisfaction.

Abstract The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between emotional intelligence and stress coping style among foodservice employees in the Brazilian context. The sample consisted of 284 foodservice employees in the Brazilian industry. The results showed that the Brazilian context is different from previous contexts studied with twice as many people below 30 years old, unskilled labor, and a much higher turnover rate. Data also suggests that there are several different relationships between emotional intelligence and stress coping style, particularly when considering the moderating role of job characteristics in this relationship.
